I'm so pumped for this reaction! 💕 This will probably end up being my favorite movie of the year and one of my favorites of the last 5-10 years at least.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

AMAZE AMAZE AMAZE 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 The first time I saw this movie I remember thinking at some point during it that I absolutely could not wait to watch it again - and the movie wasn't even over.

Kait 🩷

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS IM READY

Elay

LETS GOO!!!

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I'm right there with you - one of the top movies I've seen in a while and it has become my go-to comfort movie. I watch it any time I need a mood boost.

Elay

THIS MOVIE WAS 👎👎👎👎👎👎 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Stephen Hert

YES. This movie was amazing. The book is even better.. The audiobook is phenomenal with Ray Porter.

Rachelley

AHHHH!!!! I clock out in 2 hrs 😭😭😭

Lauren

OMG, it’s happening! I hope you guys love this one as much as I did! Amaze amaze amaze!

Liam

Was planning on watching this movie tonight. Now I'll just watch your reaction

kelsie

LETS GOOOO! i’ve been obsessively refreshing all day for this 👎

Jeff K.

Looking forward to watching this a second time. I’ll be honest, I didn’t love the ending when I listened to the audiobook. But I did enjoy it, and I liked the movie. I have a feeling this is a film that’ll get more and more enjoyable for me every time I watch it. (Also, Dave, yes that was the AT&T girl, Milana Vayntrub. She’s a really great sketch comedian.)

Alexandra

THE WAY I SCREAMED THANK YOU

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

👎🏻👎🏻You should be refreshing the Badd Medicine website, not Patreon. Project Hail Mary has been up on the site for four hours! Any time you're waiting for something to drop, check the homepage of the site (or hang out in the general chat room - people who obsessively refresh the site when waiting for something to drop will say so the chat room the second it goes up) 👎🏻👎🏻

liya

amaze amaze amaze!!!

Jenna G.

i highly recommend listening to the audiobook, Ray Porter does a phenomenal job with the voices and there's added sound effects it's amazing!! Also I saw this in IMAX it was an indescribable experience. Those quiet moments where the sound cuts out, ive never heard a full theater so SILENT with anticipation, so incredible!!

Megan the Librarian

The silent scream I scrum when I refreshed and saw this! Happy birthday to me!! 🎉😂

Maisie

I feel like Grace was at least a bit smarter in the book, which I appreciated.

Stephen Hert

If you get too much into the science and math, you’re gonna lose a lot of audience members, so I thought they gave it just the right amount of that to keep the audience engaged and to show that Grace was smart.

Brittney Alvarez

AHHHHHHHH!! Yes first reaction I’ve seen for PHM! Can’t wait. Saw it three times in the movie theater (different formats) and listened to the audiobook within like the first two weeks of the movie being out lol 😅. Will watch along soon - Hope you guys loved it!

I'm Batman

Hadn't even heard of this movie till everyone on social media started hyping this movie up a short time ago. Just watched a trailer for it a few minutes ago and even though it's not really my cup of tea genre wise I'm gonna give this a chance nonetheless due to the praise I've seen everyone give it.

Stephanie J

I looooove this movie. Love that it had no green/blue screen! The puppeteer for Rocky also voiced him. Great reaction!

kelsie

oh that’s so cool, thanks for the heads up! 🫶

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Loved this reaction and love this movie - Diamond Dave, one thing that you guys missed (I think) just because sometimes you're all talking and you miss a bit of dialog - I was reminded of this when Oak was describing "fuck it" bravery in the outro. Grace talking to Commander Yao (the captain of the Hail Mary), saying how much he appreciates what they're all doing, Yao says "You would do the same." Grace says "I don't have the bravery gene you all have." And Yao says "It's not a gene - you just need to find someone to be brave for." And of course, he did.

Chloe Smith

always great to see the 4 of you there when I open the video. I was hoping no one would miss this one.

Esther K

Favorite and BEST Movie of the year!

Steph

Rocky is the thing in the movie that’s completely practical. And it’s kind of incredible. Also there’s a really great video that walks through the practical build of the ship. The level of detail is astounding: https://youtu.be/CO6oyFP14rU?si=YDKAv8FastWfNSiw My favorite book, now one of my favorite movies. LOVED rewatching this with you guys!!

Valentine

I literally came out of the theater 20 minutes ago but will watch this video now haha I went to see this movie without any expectations and it quickly became one of my favorite movie of all time The visuals are absolutely breathtaking

Michael

OMG YES this is gonna be so good for work tonight! Dude this movie took me by surprise its sooooo fucking good and it LOOKS SO GOOD Like did they use film cameras or something because i could see that old style film grain from old sci fi movies even if it was just an added effect it worked really well and the fact Rocky is not CGI just makes it so good with all the actual sets they built but man i bet this looked so good in theaters ugh! This movie is amazing. Such a roller coaster of emotion but in the best way.. and then the ending is just perfect. Cant wait to see yalls reaction later

Michael

I have to go see it on the big screen i cant even imagine how beautiful it must have been... that scene when hes just having that moment in the petrova line.. so beautitful

Valentine

It is a must to see it in a theater, I unfortunately didn't have Imax but I would a 100% recommend it!

Lauren

I’m glad that Oak is saying at the end that the this was a “banger” because it was hard to tell with his resting Oak face throughout the movie, lol.

Lauren

I thought the same thing!

Stephanie

Glen Powell played an astronaut in Hidden Figures.😉

I'm Batman

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, the only thing that is keeping me from giving it a 5 though is the runtime, a bit too long for my personal taste given the genre. However, the story, performance, visuals, and soundtrack were all amazing. It was a good first time watch. Wouldn't be anything I watch multiple times or anything. It is a movie I'd recommend anyone to watch though. I'll give this a 4.25/5

Ryan Towell

i wanted to see this in theaters but I never had time to go. So happy you guys are doing this with no sync. Very cool guys. I loved The Martian so I really wanted to see this as they are both written by the same guy. And who doesn't like just about anything Ryan Gosling does. After watching this, it was fun. The visuals were awesome. Ryans shirts in this was part of the fun. But like the Martian this has a lot of heart. So good.

slavicandsapphic

I have never been in a theater as silent as this one during the Fishing scene since Infinity War during the Snap. No one coughed, no one ate popcorn, I’m not even sure some of us were able to breathe. It was incredible. Couple of things: Stratt has a prison tattoo if anyone didn’t notice! She went to prison for what she did to slow down the cooling of the Earth; it was incredibly heart breaking as she enlisted the help of climate change scientists. One guy was crying as he ended up speeding up the climate change so people would survive. How did they do that? Nuking the arctic caps and paving over the Sahara(the Sahara was more for the fuel for the ship, its explained better in the books). Another thing is that Stratt caused the amnesia on purpose as Grace started saying how he would sabotage the mission out of spite. The amnesia was there so he would only remember he was forced by the time he had either found the solution or was too invested to stop. Stratt loves humanity more than anything, but to do her job, she must distance herself from the people she is around. She cannot get focused on the one or she will lose them all. She had *no other option* than Grace at that time. Stratt they will never make me hate u ❤️

slavicandsapphic

Its when hes not making that face is when I worry abt him not enjoying it LMAO

slavicandsapphic

I think it was actually “A Moment” scene that was all practical. Rocky, according to the directors, was 50/50. Either way, incredible how far we’ve come with these effects

The Astral Nut

I found you guys at Harry Potter and fell in love, such a great group of dudes, and with each time we enjoy a movie together the bond grows, I saw this movie with my son, now 10. We are big space nerds and this just blew our minds away. I loved every bit of it. The hearth, the adventure, especially in this day and age, to have a hopeful story the touches the core of being alive and part of this universe. It's tied for my favorite movie of all time and seeing it on 70mm film IMAX with my son was a moment I'll never forget, and now to enjoy this with you guys....love. 50 "thumbs down," ;) Love you guys and keep at it, stay safe. AMAZE! AMAZE! AMAZE!

slavicandsapphic

I wanna say you are absolutely creating core memories with your son and thats beautiful I still remember when my mom/dad would take me to see movies, and I will never forget seeing the first Avengers in theaters. Wishin yall the best :3

Alan

Absolute fire movie. Great reaction! You guys should watch Sunshine! Space movie starring Cillian Murphy written by Alex Garland directed by Danny Boyle.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Rocky is often a puppet, sometimes CGI. There's a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff on YouTube about how Rocky was created!

slavicandsapphic

I love that the astrophage isn’t portrayed as something evil. It is a living being, not bound by human morals. It is just going to feed.

glub

you guys mentioned at one point that stratt looked a lot older than grace did by the end of the movie, and thats due to relativity instead of the coma thing that grace was put into. The faster something moves the slower time passes for it, so while it took grace only around 4 years to make the journey the first time around, 11 years had passed for earth, as his ship was moving closer to the speed of light than earth was. Since grace also went back to the eridians planet, the journey was around 4 years from earth to tau ceti, however much time grace and rocky spent figuring things out, and then 4 more years for the probes to reach earth while he traveled to epsilon eridani, leading to him only experiencing 8 years of time passing while stratt would have experienced around 22.

M

Just know “a moment” scene looked AMAZING in IMAX. I literally had tears in my eyes

mimi ྀིྀིྀིྀིྀི

Amaze amaze amaze!! So happy that you guys reacted to this movie. I watched it in theatres, and nothing will beat seeing specific scenes (the Petrova Line scene specifically) on a big screen. Everyone was just crying by the end of the movie - my friend and I were sobbing and sniffling throughout it lol. Thank you for the reaction! :) + Not sure if you guys are the theatre type, but I highly recommend you watch it in theatres when they start doing reruns for it!

M

Yes!!! SPOILER . . . So it’s been confirmed by the author that Grace never returns to earth 😌 that all he needs is his best friend rocky.

Chloe Smith

I am also someone who doesn't love long movies in the theatres because I find it hard to sit and watch something for so long without having breaks, or sometimes I just feel like the runtime is too long. I regularly check the time on my phone, not because I am not enjoying a movie, but because my brain is so overactive, constantly calculating the time and planning things. But I did not check the time once, I got so engaged, more than I have in any other movie. Every now and the people like us find that one movie where time doesn't matter

Jeff K.

Though I won’t be surprised if that changes given there’s a lot of talk about a sequel now, since the movie was such a massive success.

M

Yup! Which I’m on the fence about since there’s no sequel to the book 😅 but we shall see

fatoumata cisse

Honestly, the pacing was pretty good. It didn’t even feel long to me, and I’ve rewatched it several times. I honestly wouldn’t have minded if the movie was even longer because there are some aspects from the book I would’ve liked to see more of. But I understand they can’t fit everything into a 2.5-hour movie since there’s a lot to cover, and I think they did a good job condensing it.

Jeff K.

Finished the movie part of the reaction and going into the discussion, and MQ saying how much it reminds him of The Martian, and now I’m just waiting and watching to see if they discover there’s a reason for that since it’s the same author.

I'm Batman

@Chloe Smith, oh believe me a long movie doesn't bother me. My favorite movies all happen to be over 3+ hours long, it's only because I'm not really a Sci-Fi guy. Don't like Star Trek or Star Wars, didn't care for 5th Element, or much other Sci-Fi stuff. Only whenever it's mixed with horror or comedy can I enjoy a Sci-Fi movie or series really. This is a great movie and I enjoyed it and I'd watch it if I was scrolling and it was on a channel, just not one I'd purposely go looking for.

Kary lit et mijote

I kind of imagine the sequel taking place many years in the future, with new characters, and a very old Rocky, making his way to earth. And then you get Eridians meeting Humans. With Rocky being the ambassador. That would be awesome.

Gemma Christine

My husband took me to see this movie, he had read the book prior but I had no idea was I was getting myself into.. I was sobbing!!! I love how Oak mentioned that it really took you to a low low and then such a high when Rocky was up and rolling around again. I was sad crying which turned into a happy cry over A ROCK! lol the type of humor was such a treat and we loved this movie so much! If I was Grace I’d stay lol also we did see it in IMAX and highly recommend if you are still able too! We were in awe!

Aubrey

My book club was reading this when the trailer was released. I was literally THREE PAGES from meeting Rocky when an IG reel picked up in the middle of the trailer and spoiled me. I was so gd mad lollll. If you loved the movie, I highly suggest you read the book--more precisely, I highly suggest the audiobook. While I think the movie did a brilliant job, Grace's interiority in the book is just so fantastic. You really understand how truly exceptional he is. He's almost a lovable, bumbling idiot in the movie, but in the book, he and Rocky are very well matched. I think it was Quinn that touched on the language, and DD mentioned wanting to know how they did it. Rocky's language is basically music so Grace uses MIDI software and codes his own program to record and catalog Rocky's vocabulary. They initially learn how to communicate through time and physics first before they start assigning sounds to words and concepts. By the end, he doesn't even really need the computer to translate anymore. It's one of my favorite parts in the book. Another key element that I wish they had taken three minutes to explain is that the easiest way to get the crew to Tau Ceti without them going mad is to put them in a medically induced coma. However, there are very few people who are genetically equipped to experience that and make a full recovery, so this makes the pool of people who are qualified AND physically capable veryyyyyy small. Grace is one of those people, which is why they have to force him to go. If DD liked Stratt in the movie, I feel like he would love book Stratt, and the ending of the book leaves no question as to Grace's fate. I've seen this movie twice in theaters. The first time was just me and my daughter, and she knew nothing about the movie except that I was ecstatic to see it. We both cried multiple times through the second half. The second time I saw it was in IMAX, and I cried several times then as well, but it was because of the cinematography and sound design. Every time the screen flashes from the Tau Ceti green to the taumoeba red, I'm just completely overcome by the beauty. If you have time, please please please take a moment to learn about the magic that went into creating this film. It is truly masterful

Ginger

My first watch was with you guys. I had heard a lot of good things about the movie and it did not disappoint. Thoroughly enjoyed this movie. And if I was Grace, I would stay on Ered too after how he was abducted and forced to go against his will.

Mister Lou

The karaoke scenes are my favorite! When he askes on earth, can I think about it? Their answer was: You have 3 hours. When he askes Rocky if he can think about it, Rocky said "take your time" or w/e im paraphrasing. Says so much! 5/5 for me!

Kalkent

Though it did not quite live up to hype, I certainly enjoyed it very much. A magnetic lead who turned in one of the best performances of the year thus far - and of his career - an original idea exploring the depths of space that not only makes you think but also question the hows and whys and whats, put together tightly without much fluff. 3.7 Answers

Isolde

It’s the same author who wrote The Martian just so you guys know :)))

Alyssa Dyson

Was starting to feel the length of this movie a bit then Rocky started talking and all was well again.

Nana 95

I remember reading the book years ago and still one of my absolute favourites. The adaptation is done to perfection. Obviously, they weren't able to include everything, the book is super long, but they included the most important parts. One difference that i like them including in the movie but wasn't in the book, is at the end we see earth and Eva checking the video of grace and rocky, and then getting to work. One fun fact that is in the book but not in the movie is at the end figuring out Grace food source. He won't have food forever. So the scientists there made clowns of Grace, and he is eating burger meat of those clowns...aka he is eating himself. By the way, the author of the project hail mary is the same author of the book martian. The adaption of the martian with Matt Damon

Michael

Man this was really good! Great reaction good good good. Seriously though it had me on the edge a lot but also what Quinn said like the tone of the movie almost had more wonder and amaze haha rather then turmoil or peril I mean it did have high stakes for sure but in that same sense the Martian has which is also the same author of the book he wrote them both they had this playful vibe and again it was still very traumatic and I thought for sure Rocky was toast and or gonna be hurt but yeah still had hope and man the ending is just perfect honestly. Tied up in a bow for sure. Glad y’all enjoyed this and there’s some trivia on IMDb about how Ryan heard the lady who plays the main woman of the project just randomly singing on set or something and then suggested she should sing in the movie and they did that in like two days pretty awesome it was random but actually had a big impact in the movie during that song you could Kind of feel the movie getting serious and for once see the actual like ramifications of what we would lose if we did nothing so yeah beautiful song for that moment. Those aspect ratio changes as well just “ not giving you the full picture” in the past but in the present time we get the full view and that is just amazing. I def need to see this in the theaters.

Jeff K.

No sequel to the book YET. Could wind up being a Jurassic Park situation, where there was no sequel but once the movie blew up, Michael Crichton cranked out The Lost World and it was immediately evident that it was purely for the sake of Hollywood within the first few pages when Ian Malcolm - who DIES in the first book - was introduced as the protagonist and they handwave away his whole "being dead" thing by citing "the miracles of science" or some shit.

Jesse B

Never thought I’d get emotional about a damn cool Rock 😭😭😭

Alexandra

I read the book before watching the movie and let me tell you, I was BAWLING my eyes when I read the book and then still cried in the theaters. A masterpiece, truly

Demanda

I agree, as much as I loved the science stuff from the book it would have been hard to incorporate into the film. The Martian adaptation leaned more into that aspect and did it very well, whereas I liked the choice to focus more on the relationship with Rocky

Lou_Lou

This was so good, or should I say AMAZE!!!! Oak is right, i don’t care to see anything in theaters but this would DEFINITELY be worth seeing on the big screen! Such an incredible movie definitely deserves all the attention it’s been receiving.

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I think you mean "clones"? The Eridians clone some of Grace's muscle tissue to make food he can eat, which he calls "Meburgers."

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

There's no sequel *yet*. And if they ever did do a sequel I'm certain they'd have Andy Weir as a huge part of the process - and he's held back answers on a few of the questions he was asked during the press junket for this movie because he says he's thinking about writing a sequel.

Maisie

I really enjoyed this movie, but I do wish they'd made Grace a bit smarter. They never explain why he's the "leading expert on astrophage biology." In the movie at least, he made one accidental discovery based on someone else's reasoning. They give a better reason in the book and I wish they included it.

Lee DesFleurs

I posted on the main site but I'll post it here too for anyone curious: Just a quick explanation on the aging-- Special Relativity! So the journey was 11 light years away, but the closer you travel to the speed of light, the shorter time you "experience". That's why the journey was "4" years instead of 11-- that was from his perspective. On Earth (and Erid) it was 11 years. (Or 22 minimum by the time Earth gets the data-- remember, 11 there, 11 back, plus however long it took them to do science. That's why you can see all the ice.) In short: Less time passes for person on ship, more time passes back home, due to going REAL fast.

Lee DesFleurs

(This is also a simplification, since Weir didn't use a straight line calculation but accounted for constant building speed, but you get the gist)

Aria Isara

Agreed. It's a nice story and the movie is well done, but I'm not sure why there is *so* much hype? 4 out of 5 for movie, 3.5 for the story but 4 because I enjoyed the different visuals and the practical effects.

Aria Isara

It's a cute story (the friendship between human and alien), and the movie is well done both in terms of the script (flashbacks interspersed all throughout) and visuals (I love that they did things differently than the usual CGI/green screen). That being said, the story is really deja vu, especially all the humour and quips that I heard in so many other comedies before. Like when Rocky just says "words of encouragement". Don't know where I heard it beofre but I definitely did hear this exact same joke before. There were various other instances. Still an enjoyable movie with good technical aspects, I just don't get why people are SO passionate about it 🤷‍♀️ 4 out of 5 for me.

Kalkent

Well the hype surrounded this project even before any sort of promotion was released because the novel has a huge fanbase. Even my own excitement majorly came from that it was another Andy Weir adaptation than any of the trailers, simply because I absolutely loved The Martian. Regarding PHM, my main critique, and why ultimately I wasn't nowhere near as emotionally invested as the majority of public was due to the lack of peril/stakes, which inherently is related to the tone of the film. I never, for one second felt the gravitas, the tension. Considering this story is much larger in stake compared to The Martian, where the very future of the world is dependent on this mission, the film failed to invoke any sense of peril. The tone was too light for me. Also they glossed so much over the science that it felt jarring. But still a fun film. P.S. I'd highly recommend The Sheep Detectives if you haven't seen it. Very touching, emotional and not a bad mystery.

Aubrey

I loved that Oak coined the phrase "fuck it" bravery. It's like the adult version of 20 seconds of insane courage from We Bought A Zoo (which I'd love to see them react to).

SushiBoy

This reminds me of a Wes Anderson style film

SushiBoy

this was genuinely such an awesome fun movie. Rocky is a legend

J

THIS MOVIE WAS "FIST MY BUMP" GOOD BRO 😭❤️

Lucy Hale

Wow, that's all I can say

M K7001

Writing wise I totally understand why she did it and I think it was its own kind of bravery to be that person but also I'm glad she went to jail over it. Regardless of the overall good she wanted to do by saving the planet, I don't think anyone has any innate responsibility to save others and she took that choice away from Grace because she didn't like his answer. He has just as much of a right to say no and not fight to save the world as she does the sense to make him do it anyway. So basically, I don't blame Grace for saying no initially and I also get why Stratt felt it was better to make him do it anyway.

Mari Vaz

I wish she song "Gracias a la vida" from Mercedes Sosa had it's lyrics on the subtitle. I think most people in Latin America heard it before and is so beautiful. It got me deeply emotional hearing in this movie !

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

Rocky Grace sequel likely, statement. Author described not answering certain questions on press junket because answers are for sequel.

Matthew Glover

AMZE AMAZE AMZE!!! that is awesome news,i knew nothing about this going into it. Didnt even watch the trailer,i just knew it was Ryan Gosling in space lol. Space is my favorite place for stories, whether it be movies,tv,video games, books, whatever. So i had zero expectations, but like you, i wanted to rewatch it already only halfway through. Ryan is at his best when hes a solo act,and he really nailed the performance. Cant wait for the sequel,STATEMENT. *Rubs arm*

Linnea Janson

You said you knew that the movie is based on a book and it is actually the same author that wrote the martian! Once you know that you realize a lot of similarities between the two, especially in the humor, it's very much jumping between a very serious tone to a very humorous just like in the martian!

Charity Konusser (the chonus)

I can highly recommend both the ebook and the audiobook in the meantime for more Grace & Rocky interactions and Big Science

Marie RammGirl

LOVED the friendship bond that developed between Grace/Rocky, ya know it's good writing when they make ya tear up & care so much about Rocky, their entire dialogue/interactions with each other was my favourite thing about this movie & so endearing to watch, that hug scene was so sweet. "Toot to Scoot" was an amusing line, as was the "I wear this Tshirt Periodically" hehe. The British sample voice sounded Scottish haha, I'll end with saying this movie was "AMAZE AMAZE AMAZE!" ❤️

Bella H

I had no idea what this movie was about, so I went in blind to the reaction on Sunday. As soon as the movie was over, and the guys had just started giving their review, I was already looking up IMAX tickets because I KNEW I had to watch it again but on the big screen. Lucky I did as its finishing up in IMAX in melb tomorrow! So I booked tickets for tonight (first time a reaction vid has made me do that - they should give BM a cut, lol). Honestly, what an AMAZE AMAZE AMAZE movie 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

MJ

The Johnny Cash version of Sunday Morning Coming Down is my favorite, but I also really love that they used Kris Kristofferson's original version in this. It's my favorite song of his.

revolves.round.AVA

This took me on one hell of an emotional roller coaster. I cried over a rock 😭

Addicted2Drama

I absolutely loved this movie. I cried when Rocky got hurt. This movie was just fantastic. I'm ready to watch it again.
