Ranveer & Deepika in a film together ♥️ I’m so EXCITED for this one. Yes, and Shahid 😭

Chantal

This makes me sooo happy! Cant wait to watch this tonight 😭

Chikaaaa

Omg!!! I didn’t think this would come today !!!!

The dresses and jewellery they wore especially that Deepika wore were extremely heaving 40 kg+. And she had to do graceful dances, twirls etc all with that outfit. Fyi Ranveer (who played the villain Allaudin) and Deepika Padukone the lead actress (Padmaavati) are married and have children irl. You have seen Deepika in Kalki and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani before, Ranveer Singh in Rocky Aur Rani & Dhurandhar and Shahid Kapoor in Jersey (hindi)

To answer Mason Quinn question when Padmavati was talking to the other Queen: both women are married to the King; Nagmati (the one who was crying) is Ratan Singh's first wife and the legal queen consort of Mewar, Padmavati is the Princess of Singhal (modern-day Sri Lanka) whom Ratan Singh meets, falls in love with, and brings back to Chittor as his second wife. Therefore both women are Queens.

Finally!! Please let bajrangi bhaijaan be next 😭

*Spoilers below! Don’t read until you finish the movie* From everything i’ve read, Khilji’s siege and the women's self-immolation are historical, but Queen Padmaavati herself is fictional. This movie is based on the poem “Padmavat” by Malik Jayasi written in 1540, 200 years after the invasion. This poem is the first time she's mentioned. Her existence is a legend/folktale that became a symbol of honor and there are no official records she existed. Historical records show that Rajput women in the kingdom Khilji invaded did burn alive, and this was a common practice called “jauhar” when the kingdom faced defeat. They would wear their finest bridal attire and jump into fire. As dark as painful as that is, the only other option was to be captured, enslaved, and abused by enemy soldiers. That was the only alternative to avoid long term torture and protect their dignity. They had to burn to ash because even dead bodies were assaulted and taken apart for trophy souvenirs (this has occurred throughout many global wars). Even children and pregnant women wouldn’t be spared. This movie was controversial and there were many violent protests before the release due to religious conflict. There were false rumors about an intimate scene between the Queen and Khilji which would dishonor her, and some people didn’t like how the Queen was portrayed, claiming she wouldn’t dance in public or show her waist (technology was used to cover her skin during her dance scene). People also disliked how most of the movie centered around Khilji more than the Queen. The director was even attacked on set and the actors were threatened. The film was renamed from “Padmaavati” to “Padmaavat” to align more with the fictional poem. Hope this info is helpful for others who weren’t familiar with the historical context.

I don't think you caught this but Khilji's slave Malik Kafur was in love with him. It is said that Khilji was bisexual in real life. There were small things in the movie Malik did where you see how in love with him he is. Also Netflix is annoying & doesn't put subtitles on songs. The song "Binte Dil" at 1:01:00 is actually Malik Kafur professing his love to Khilji & even tries to get in bed with him at the end, but faces rejection yet again. He was also trying to get in bed with him earlier in the movie when Khilji was with his wife. And when Khilji shows his hand and asks Malik if there are lines that show he has love in his destiny to Malik (talking about Padmaavati) and Malik looks and replies there aren't with tears (here the tears are for himself, that despite his love for the Sultan he will never be loved back)

I think historical fiction is one of Bollywood’s best genres and I love Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directing and set design for period pieces. The story of a King dying fighting for his Queen’s honor while she sacrifices herself for her own honor reminds me of Romeo and Juliet, and it's actually better imo even if it's dark. It was a common ancient practice to have multiple wives for status and economic/political alliances (I personally don't support that practice lol). Queen Padmaavati became the King's 2nd wife. It's disappointing there were no subtitles during the songs...Bollywood films usually have them. The Queen's dance scene welcomed her to the palace and celebrated her marriage. She sang about her love for the King. English translation of the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtLWM5ENxYE. Khilji sang about his obsessive "love" for the Queen and not caring about the world. His slave Malik's song tried to make him forget her by highlighting that the beauty he desires is in front of him (they alluded to a homosexual relationship between them in the movie, and some historical accounts suggest they might have been intimate). Deepika Padukone is my favorite Bollywood actress. Her films were the first Bollywood movies I enjoyed as a kid (my uncle owned a Bollywood movie theater). Her performances are top tier and I think her dancing and acting is one of the best in the industry. The outfit she wore during the “Ghoomar” dance scene weighed 110 pounds including the dress and jewelry. Ranveer as Khilji definitely stole the show with his performance though. He’s one of the most terrifying villains I’ve seen and needed a psychiatrist to help pull him out of character after his intense method acting. I think Shahid Kapoor is the most handsome King (as Oak acknowledged) and he suited the stoic King role well. He did a great job with the screen time he had and said he felt minimized in this role, which I understand. They spent so much time on Khilji while the King didn't even have 1 dance number, which I felt was missing. I hope all 4 of you will also watch Bajirao Mastani soon, my favorite. It’s another period piece by the same director, starring Deepika and Ranveer (they’re married irl). He plays a completely different role as a hero in that one. Om Shanti Om is a classic drama with Deepika and Shah Rukh Khan, and Jodhaa Akbar is another great romance period film. I would love it if you reacted to those at some point.

Do you have a source for Jayasi making it clear she is fictional? Because I only found info on other people interpreting his work as an allegory, not Jayasi himself saying anything. (Not that I believe her to be real, it's impossible to tell)

1st time watch, this movie had me so stressed at the end even though I knew how it ended 😭 It's the 3rd movie in a row that Sanjay Leela Bhansali made with Deepika and Ranveer even though in this one they have 0 scenes together. They first did Ram Leela, an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, and fell in love during the shooting. Then the historical epic Bajirao Mastani where they play lovers and finally Padmaavat where they are enemies. They got married in real life in 2018. Bhansali is one of the most well known Bollywood filmmakers, renowned for his impressive sets and costumes. My personal favs of his are Devdas (which did the Cannes Festival opening in 2002, adaptation of a very famous classic of Indian literature) and Gangubai Kathiawadi (biopic of a prostitute/social activist who lived in Mumbai in the 60s-70s). The actor who played Alauddin's second in command also plays the villain in Neerja, which is highly upvoted on the website, and is the real story of a hijacking. To see more of our main guy Shahid Kapoor/the Rajput king, I hope you'll watch Haider one day, it's an incredible adaptation of Hamlet and known as one of his best performances. For Deepika I'm hoping for a reaction to Tamasha where she is paired with Ranbir Kapoor. It's a powerful romance/drama, I would say a masterpiece even. Otherwise one Indian epic period piece I really enjoyed is the telugu movie Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy, the lead is played by the dad of one of the leads in RRR. It's fiction but inspired by a real freedom fighter.

If you're interested here is a very detailed and sourced page on what we know of Queen Padmaavati. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rani_Padmini Basically her historicity isn't proven, but she could be inspired by several people like it happened a lot back then with stories coming from oral tradition. Even King Arthur is thought to have some vague historical basis.

Aria Isara

Mason Quinn especially got shook! There is one particular Indian movie for which I would really, really like to see his face at the end 😬 (one of my all time favs, obviously I won't say which one 😅)

Amaia

That's true, I don't think he did. He just stated that the poem itself is fictional. I edited my comment to clarify. Based on the lack of any concrete proof of her existence, the fact that most historians don't believe she was real, this poem being written 200 years later (Jayasi wouldn't have seen or heard of her while she was alive), and no firsthand accounts of her before that, I personally believe she's fictional. Even if her character was inspired by another woman, there isn't any record of a connection to a real person. I feel like the author would've let the public know if she was.

Amaia

To me it also looked like Answer was holding back tears at the end. There are some movie scenes like this that hit you every time. No matter how much I watch it, I get emotional

Suba Jeyabal

Indian women back then didn't have the choice of a bear. They chose fire instead because they knew what the men would have done to them had they been captured.

Zobia Shaikh

Yall should watch Ram-leela! It has Deepika in it and it’s the Bollywood version of Romeo and Juliet

Knightmare

Wow. All I can say is wow.

Please react to some old shah rukh khan movies from late 90s and early 2000s that would be fun! They’re iconic in this genre

The reason Allaudin wanted Padmaavati was not only because of her beauty. The guru (banished guy) said to Allaudin that with her by his side he will be the next Alexander. He will be able to conquer the world, everyone will be at his feet. That is the destiny reading that made him want her so bad

Jab We Met next I think it has the most votes!
