Been waiting to cry my eyes out again with you guys😭 What a film ✨

Cassandra

I also highly recommend the book for anyone who hasn’t read it!!

Dannielle

Brie earned a multitude of awards for this film including the Academy Award, she's incredible in this movie. Another movie of hers that just blew me away is Short Term 12, it's not an easy watch but it is an incredible movie.

Badd Medicine

How was this film compared to the book? Did they stay pretty close to it?

Cassandra

Yes! The movie was very faithful to the book, but the book is through the POV of jacks mind which is so interesting to read!!😊

Liam

This film is rough 👀

H. AW

ugh this is a heavy one...

Limini

I only know that little boy from horror short films lol

Maisie

The author adapted the screenplay herself from her own novel, and she did it brilliantly!!! IMO the film is even better than the book, but the book does explain some things more explicitly (like why they chose that moment to do their CoMC plan--they were worried that the layoff would mean he'd lose his house/property and they'd be loose ends for him to tie up.)

Maisie

This movie is incredible. I will never understand how this child was not nominated for an Oscar! Thank you guys for watching it and reacting to it! I'm so glad you were all here and that you were so invested.

Maisie

Yes! Please everyone go vote for Short Term 12 on the website, it's amazing!

enyo96

Brie won an Oscar for this movie❤️ she was brilliant, and so was Jacob Tremblay (Jack)!

Victoria 🌱

This month's rollout has been incredible

MadBone127

This was a great reaction, thank you. I recommend the book for anyone who is interested. Like the movie, the book is from Jack's perspective. It's well-written and compelling. The book has more about the media circus and the judgement Joy received for things like breastfeeding Jack for so long, and the media sensationalising the sexual violence instead of treating it as the horror that it was. The book and movie are not just about the captivity but about trying to adjust and how society treats people who have survived things like that.

Mari-Emm

This is the kinda movie that deserves every viewing it can get bc it is so real and many people won't have to go through anything like this. It deserves to get shed light into

iluvdavidfincher437

Okay since Jacob Tremblay is in this im hoping at some point we get a reaction to Wonder and Good Boys

Kaley

At first I was confused when Jack was pointing to Joy’s chest and she said, “No, there’s none left.” And then I put together she’d been breastfeeding him to help him get the additional nutrients he needed due to the guy not giving them substantial food-UGH. 😔😔😔

Shannon

Wonder 😍😍

Angela 🌺

LOL, When I saw the notification, I thought it was "THE Room," LOL!

rin

I watched this movie aftwe it came out when I was 11 alone afterschool safe to say it changed my world view but rewatching is so different as an adult

Jeff K.

My favorite part of that is that I remember they had some victims at the ceremony, and Brie hugged every single one of them as they left the stage and walked by her (the cameras weren't really following her or anything so it didn't feel remotely performative, they just happened to catch it on the broadcast).

I'm Batman

Holy shit, I was not ready for this at all. I thought for certain the mom was gonna be killed after Jack escaped, but when she was escorted to the cop car I broke down, wasn't the only time I did either. The nervousness I felt when he was going through the steps to escape while in the back of his truck was on a whole other level than anytime I've felt nervous from any movie at all, had to pause to catch my breath through it. Just an absolutely amazing film. This is a movie I'm gonna watch whoever reacts to it. Only a few movies/franchises I do that for where I look up reactions to. Easily a 5/5 for me.

sarina

ooof i haven’t seen this movie in years. it’s a hard watch but i will watch it again with yall 🫶🏻

I'm Batman

Gotta add, the fact this story takes place in Ohio reminds me of a real life event that happened here in Ohio as well, in 2013 up in Cleveland there were 3 girls who were held captive for somewhere around 10 years. 2 of the 3 girls were kidnapped when they were teenagers and the other was somewhere around 19 at the time I believe. One of the girls got pregnant by the kidnapper and the child was raised in the house where they were being held captive. Eventually one of them was able to break out and they ran to a neighbor's house and dialed 911. The girls and the child were rescued and the guy was arrested and sentenced to 1000 years in prison without parole. He killed himself 1 month into his sentence.

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

The kid playing Jack is in another really good, emotional movie, that was also based on a book called "Wonder". It's up on the recommendations to react to.

Mackenzie OReally Bravo

Woah I never would have put that together! I was confused by that part too!

VariantsWatchMovies

Like a few of the other comments, I read the book with my bookclub before seeing the film so I knew what I was in for. It's been a long time since I read the book, but I remember thinking it was fairly true to the book. I do remember that the book was mostly through Jack's voice and we had talked about what a good job the author did of building a world and vocabulary of a child who had been so isolated. Both Brie and Jacob had terrific performances and Ii was glad to see Brie win the Oscar.

Jackie Jack

Definitely a powerful film. The part when Ma takes Jack back and he is ok with leaving everything behind speaks volumes. It's snowing again, so it's seems it's been about a year since their freedom, and be had grown so much emotionally.

Alex

Don't know if it was mentioned, but the book, and subsequently the movie, was inspired by the Fritzl case in Austria, where dad imprisoned his 18 year old daughter for 24 years and she had 7 children from him in the basement of their house.

Liam

After seeing this reaction I now want you guys to watch The Hunt (2012)

Eni

At least he won the critics choice. ☝🏼👏🏼

Eni

I loved her in Lessons in Chemistry. ❤️

Maisie

True. Adorable speech too.

Alex

APEX reaction please!!

The look on Oak's face the second he clocked what was going on was VISCERAL.

2026-09-06 11:00 On Oak’s note about a happy ending. I really like the ending because it doesn’t sugarcoat while still providing hope. We don’t know what her life will look like going forward but all any of us can do it take one day at a time and start to be better. Doesn’t mean it’s all uphill from here. You even see her doubt herself immediately. Progress is not linear. But hope and healing is possible.

Rodrigo

Watch "Lion"! You would love it

Lauren

This is a movie about the triumph of the human spirit and resilience of mothers. It’s a hard watch, for sure, but it’s totally worth it. And little Jack was so impressive - telling THIS story through a child’s perspective is so hard, but Jacob Tremblay did such an excellent job.

Bri

I need to see those! I was gonna recommend him in Doctor Sleep and Before I Wake. He's an amazing actor.

Bri

I'm originally from Ohio too and remember when that happened. His name was Ariel Castro in case anyone wanted to look into it.

I'm Batman

Heard a movie was made about it, but due to everything that happened it's a movie I will never watch.

dreams⁷

11 years and i still cry over this movie whenever i watch it.. especially when Jack says his Ma was in a hurry to go to heaven but she forgot him T^T They did incredible work handling the story from a child perspective (both the book and the movie) and just to think that there are a lot of cases like this out there in the world that no one knows about… I highly recommend the movie Capernaum (2018) it also follows a child story and so emotionally impactful!

Cassandra

Wait I finally hit play I’m dying at the beginning hahahaahah poor guys

Alinta_Energy

Jacob Trembley was amazing, has a long career ahead of him. If you’d like to see him in something completely different I would recommend upvoting ‘Good Boys’ on the recs page. So much talent for such a little person

Donna Rossi Youngblood

If you watch very closely, they show her breastfeeding him in the beginning of the film.

Mackenzie OReally Bravo

I've seen this one before a long time ago, but I wonder if from a persepctive of a first-time-lady-viewer without knowing the plot, if we would be more inclined to assume it's an abduction situation in the beginning, just based on how we have to be more aware of our surroundings.

Kalkent

Powerful film indeed. Brilliantly portraying one character's journey to learning to walk again after a horrific tragedy, through the eyes of someone who, though a product of the tragedy, would not fully grasp the depth of its damage until much later in life. Slightly stretched out in some parts but that doesn't take away from the absolute masterclass showcased both in directing and writing. 4.2 Answers

Both movies are incredible for very different reasons! Especially Good Boys, if you know you know lol 🤭

Rawaby 1204

Looks cozy and should be fun as an expectation was sad yet hilarious , one of the movies that i will never forget, it’s so powerful and so painful , the narration is so great , and the acting is amazing, I actually still remember the child actor name cause i remember he filmed few great movies with perfect acting at that time , thank you for watching this and hope we get more great movies

Katie

He’s really good in that one scene in Dr. Sleep!! Even though that scene is traumatizing!

Katie

I’ve watched it so many times and that scene still gives me anxiety lol

Donna Rossi Youngblood

Interesting comment. My thought was what his life would look like when he grew into adulthood, or even his hormonal teenage years and began to fully comprehend what "ROOM" was and what it meant for his mother and his own paternity and genetics. Could be that I'm a middle school teacher and I see so many kids struggling with emotional problems these days.

Karina Alarcon

Gosh, I cried once again... Jacob Tremblay deserved at least an Oscar nomination for this movie. I watched this at the cinema when it came out. I didn't want to watch this again because I was literally sobbing. This movie is so heartbreaking

Luna

This definitely is a hard watch but is also a powerful film & a good reminder of how evil people can be. Good job guys getting through it 👏🏽! I would love to see a reaction to 2007’s “The Girl Next Door”, (a fictionalized dramatization inspired by a real-life tragic event in 1965), but after this film … I think all the guys would hate me lol.

Kaley

Yes-on rewatch I noticed

Diego Barrera

I’m scared for Oak if they ever watch Short Term 12 or Doctor Sleep

Childless Bambino

Bruh i legit thought this was The Room with Tommy Wiseau until i saw the thumbnail!

Ashley

Every time one of you guys said you had no idea what the film was about at the beginning I cringed because I know how intense this film would be going in cold. I think most people who saw it when it came out did know. Super interesting to see you figure it out as the film unfolded. I love that the film like the book doesn’t stop at the escape. You get to see them come to terms with what happened.

Maria

same. I was rooting for him during that award season. what a phenominal performance.

Bloop

You guys need to watch wonder if you liked jacobs acting

Va-P7

Yeah, Oak's comment about "it looks fun" prompted an "oh no" from me. And he's so quick to pick up on certain situations. It was great to watch the guys piece it together.

Rawaby 1204

Yeah i was amazed when he got the feeling from random shots ,like I would never randomly thinking where is the door handle when the focus is not on the door

Luna

Side note to all parents : This probably doesn’t need to be said, or maybe it does …. I think it’s important to teach your children self defense (especially if they’re nice kids). Yes, there will be times when self defense won’t help but there will be times where it does help; best to give your child a fighting chance in this dangerous world. It is definitely something I wished I knew at a young age. I speak from experiences & from movies/shows/documentaries like this.

Katie Lee

As soon as I saw this posted I knew Oak was going to be a mess 😭💔

Amanda Diaz

I always seen clips on TikTok but never got around to watch. Movie was very hard to watch but was definitely good.

Marie RammGirl

This was such a heavy watch that made you feel all the depths of emotions, for Jack it was a room that he grew up in making memories with his Mother, for Joy it was a very traumatic time in a room that was prison & admire her waking up everyday in captivity putting on a brave face for her son & seeing the after effects on how both of them adapting to their freedom was a tough watch, but at least we got a hopeful ending that makes us viewers feel that after significant amount of healing, they have a chance of a happier life now. Agree with you guys that its a great movie that I never want to see again, incredible acting & camera work though.

TIA

Oh my goodness. I didn't realize until now that screaming to aliens was a way to try and get help! Goodness.

Alanna Meyers 🍌

Yes, I also learned to yell “fire” instead of “help” as a kid. And having a “family word” if someone tried to pick me up from school and said they were friends with my parents (it was Lobster lol) and if they didn’t know it I’d know not to trust them. So many important things to teach your kids

Alanna Meyers 🍌

Good Boys is one of my favourite films of all time, so good

Alanna Meyers 🍌

Wonder is amazing. He’s also in Good Boys, The Little Mermaid (2023) and Luca

Luna

Yessss !!! All of those are awesome tips ! I never learned any of that growing up 😭 lol. But you are right, so many important things to learn & teach

Kiss the Librarian

I just sat here with constant tears and snot watching this movie with you guys. Appreciated the bright spots we got with the little boy discovering life outside the room, and Leo being so patient with him. Even though the rest was painful tension, I also appreciate that this story was told so well, and with such care. It's a true exercise in empathy. Another great story about surviving abuse that's told with empathetic realism is the miniseries "Maid" on Netflix. It's a bit lighter than this. The irony that Ma's name is Joy, because that's the role she had to play to help her son survive. She was so good with him, even teaching him to read when she had no reason to hope he'd be able to use it. I love the final scene of Joy saying a quiet goodbye to the room. We see so much from Jack's perspective, and how he's having to accept the new reality that is very different from what he imagined, and let go of the place he was accustomed to. Joy is having to do the same thing, and will have to keep choosing to accept the new world (not the rosy image from her memory of the house with the hammock where both her parents lived), and let go of the fear and constant vigilance. When she said "I'm supposed to be happy," I just wanted to hold her hand. She's grieving the loss of the life she could have had, and having delayed processing of what she endured because she couldn't be fully present in it while the torture was happening. Choosing to survive will be a daily choice for her, she needs reassurance and routine as much as little Jack does. The reporter's question about why Joy didn't try to get her abuser to take the baby to a hospital is so out of touch and so cruel. Obviously the abuser would become a suspect if he dropped a baby at a hospital where there are usually cameras, and how would Joy know he wouldn't just kill the baby? It's an impossible decision. And the question is cruel for obvious reasons, misplacing blame for that man's crimes onto Joy. Whether she was captured as a teen or an adult, she was trying to survive being tortured for years, and then had someone else to protect. Her attempt to end her life after that interview makes sense given how vulnerable she was within the first year of escaping. People outside who are just participating for the drama can be almost as dangerous as the abusers. I agree with Oak that we can't armchair quarterback the argument between Joy and her mom. From the dialogue, Joy hadn't given any descriptions of what it was like living in that room, but obviously she was being raped. I understand her mom's frustration that Joy wasn't letting her in yet, but I couldn't help feeling angry when she yelled that Joy's life "wasn't the only one that was ruined." Yes Grandma went through a lot, and comparison isn't particularly helpful here, but Joy is the last person who should have to answer for that. I was glad to see Joy standing up for herself and anger is an important emotion in the recovery process. I don't know how to say this or if it is too much to share, but I relate to both Joy and Jack from my personal experiences. I grew up in an abusive home where there was a room with a bloody floor because of what my bio father would do to us. My mother was isolated, raped and miscarried repeatedly because of the beatings. The abuser was charming to people outside, he was a preacher in a small town, but he never let my mom go anywhere. When we left that situation, my mom was a psychological wreck, checked out. I would hide under tables, suspicious of relatives who visited, and tried to protect my younger brothers who were mentally handicapped from the beatings. As a young girl and a young woman, I was not given much guidance or protected from sexual abusers and I was very naive. As an adult survivor, I know how it feels to face seemingly simple decisions and feel like there's no way out. I came from a family with negative dollars, so I know how it feels to have nothing but hope. What I'm trying to say is that I made it out, and healing is possible. Surviving is still a daily choice, just like the choice to love someone or the choice to love yourself. It isn't perfect picket fences everyday but neither is anyone else's life, it isn't supposed to be. I have grown and changed, I make better decisions, especially when my brain isn't hijacked by fear. I'm proud that I practice Family Medicine now as a PA, even though it took me longer to establish my career than my peers. That isn't a brag but a signal of encouragement and understanding to anyone reading this who might be going through something similar. The past was real, but so is this moment, and so is tomorrow. Karma or justice for the abusers isn't always ours to deliver or witness, but I'm a firm believer that every abuser faces theirs eventually. And there's joy in taking back the peace they stole from you.

Kevin Pibb

I saw this when it first came out and originally said I'd probably never watch it again, but rewatching it with our guys after a decade gave me some bravery and I am glad I saw it a second time

Maisie

I've seen this movie countless times and I still get chills when he sees the sky. Every. Single. Time.
