Never have seen this movie, but can't wait to see it with my fave Gents 😊

Mae Q

Honestly one of my favorite movies. Loved it as a kid when it came out. Rewatching it as an adult made me appreciate it so much more, and also be much more angry at everyone in his life.

Alan

a top 10 movie OAT here. can't wait to dive into this with the fellas

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

Clicked on it as soon as I saw the post. This is my third fave film. It's right up there for me. It was such a novel idea, especially at the time. Though it's surreal how real life's sort of followed along a similar trajectory, with social media, etc. When this movie was made, the internet was in its infancy, and the idea of social media and live streaming wasn't really a realistic concept (imagine explaining to people in 1999 that in 25 years reaction channels like this one would exist, and people would watch people reacting to shows, etc) . But aside from that, I just love the production, acting, the set, etc. Wonderful film.

StephMurph

Saturday chores have been pushed to this afternoon! I've always thought this was one of Jim Carrey's best movies, and I'm so excited for this reaction

Laura Murray

This is the only film that I really enjoy Jim Carey in. Normally he's too much for me, nothing wrong with him, it's just not for me. So seeing him more restrained and in a serious, emotional role made me appreciate him and his acting. Such a great performance and the concept was executed really well.

Love10 ❤️

Ahead of its time... top 10 of all time

Jeff K.

I am genuinely shocked that Oak, in particular, hasn't seen this one.

Jeff K.

I still can't believe that Jim Carrey didn't get an Oscar nomination for this. He was so good in it. This and Eternal Sunshine are hands down his best dramatic performances ever.

Crispy

from what I gathered this film is about free will and no, not the whale lol

Crispy

oh im happy reading this

Crispy

Oak saying " I can't wait to see it in the wild " referring to the meme XD dudes hilarious

Dylan Hearts

DD and Oak's reactions to this was priceless, while Answer and Mason got most entertainment from their disgust and shock 🤣🤣🤣 I still think the movie could have been better if someone less associated with comedy played main character - Jim Carrey (at least for me) doesn't work. Someone like Jason Bateman (would have been funny pairing with Laura Linney lol) fits this film, making dark humor in the story shine more cause you really don't expect it from such insane story, while having Jim Carrey from the beginning sets up our expectations immediately not taking the film too seriously. Ed Harris is the reason why the film works 100%, he made us to invest in the story more than Carrey with his usual comedic gimmics (which are well done, but not surprising after his earlier films). His Christof is such a memorable villain. Overall another amusing reaction from the guys and rewatching a classic in your company was nice 😊

Gambit3838

I've been patiently waiting to say this because I've said it for 28 years now, "IN CASE I DON'T SEE YOU, GOOD AFTERNOON, GOOD EVENING & GOODNIGHT ". 😇☝️

If you want to see the modern remake of the Truman Show, just open TikTok to any "family blogger" that stages their kids for the camera. This movie was absolutely prescient.

Crispy

" We accept the reality of the world we are presented " this line is the reason this film stays in my top 3 absolutely about free will

BecauseBeca

I’d recommend Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind for you. Probably one of his most intense serious roles.

Mari Vaz

What? Who's complaining about re-watches?

-N-

In terms of little details that might be overlooked- the light that falls is labeled "Sirius." It's not a stage light, it's a fake star.

Mari Vaz

Now they have to watch Eternal Sunshine - is the best one yet

I think for me the most important take away from this movie was the same it was for the Hunger Games. The increasing amount of content we get bombarded with sort of makes us go numb for anything we get presented with. The audience watching the Truman Show surely cheered him on, rooted for him like we would for a fictional character in a story. But they don’t care about him as a person. He is not actually real to them. They are too far away. And I don’t mean geographically. There is too much emotional distance between them. This kind of desensitization that comes with a screen between us, is the same desensitization that allowed the Capitol to find the Hunger Games entertaining. It’s not real to them. They just turn off the TV afterwards and continue with their lifes, it doesn’t really affect them. The same desensitization also allows us to watch the news and not totally lose our minds because of shock, grief and empathy. It’s a defense mechanism, but it goes too far sometimes, because it keeps us from doing something; it keeps unacceptable circumstances acceptable. I remember back in 2023, when I watched the g***cide in Gaza unfold, there were a few weeks where I could not stand it. I could not sleep and it seemed like I had to physically force my eyes to keep watching the horrors on my screen. But then it got “better” and I knew it was my brain forcing me to care less so I could get on with my life. I try to work against that, but it’s just what happens. So yeah, watching works like the Truman Show or the Hunger Games always comes with outrage. ‘Why isn’t anyone doing anything? How can they just sit there and watch it happening? This is so messed up.’ But the point is that we all are doing it all the time and the fact that this movie was so ahead of its time too recognize it before the Internet started going wild, is amazing to me.

LilithCain

It's nowhere near as good, but "EDtv" (1999) starring Matthew McConaughey has a lot of similar themes.

Chosos Wife

I love this film. It gets me every time. It's crazy how much a movie from 30 years ago parallels daily life for so many people in 2026. We're born on camera or plastered online shortly after. Everyone knows everything that we do. There's videos and pictures of everything. People are always in a video call or live broadcasting etc. Our lives aren't our own. And the ending with him saying "What else is on?" After watching him for THIRTY WHOLE YEARS sums us as a species up. Wanting to have a baby live on TV and also being willing to kill Truman off shows how crazy, selfish and superior feeling Cristof was.

Mari Vaz

Yeah and that's horrifying, specially the audience it attracts when they show children on social media/yt. Is so gross.

Mari Vaz

Oak was horrified, DD was disgusted, MQ and Answer were laughing through it - is the Obsession reaction all over again lol

Jeff K.

Dave joking about a post credit scene at the end had me thinking they'd just have Jeff Probst show up wearing an eyepatch, saying to Truman, "I'd like to talk to you about the reality television initiative..."

Anthony Velasquez

Been so long that I seen this and I only seen it once gonna be a nice rewatch cant say I remember much about outside the main premise of the movie

Tania R

Really looking forward to diving into this later! But I’ll be honest with you, as a kid this film never grabbed me. I saw bits of it here and there, but it never convinced me to keep watching. However, I’m finding movies I dismissed when I was younger can be so much more intriguing as an adult. Curious to see if that’s the case here! 💛

meeshmallow

One of my top 5 favorite movies! You can rewatch it and find something new every time

thefatfurret

oak reacting to memes in movie is worth the monthly subscription fee alone lol. love his enthusiam!

GillyBean

yeah I hope they do eternal sunshine sooner rather than later now, after this. such a brilliant performance

GillyBean

Mason Quinn and the Answer giggling and nudging each other this whole reaction was the funniest thing. the fucking high five, you guys are ridiculous (with all the love ahahah)

GillyBean

For peak serious performance Jim, pleasseee everyone go upvote Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on the BM site. Carrey, Winslet, Elijah Wood, Kirsten Dunst. soooo many great performances there. would love to see the guys react to it.

Kiss the Librarian

When Truman beats his fist against the sky painted wall, it's like a final breakdown of any disbelief he had left that this was all a lie done on purpose. His confusion about what's happening is replaced with confusion about how anyone could knowingly hurt him and manipulate him like that, and call it love. It's so heartbreaking, and some of us have been there (metaphorically). I love that before he stages his great escape, he does another bit in the bathroom mirror, knowing he's being watched this time, and paints himself as the ultimate explorer of the unknown (an astronaut). And he says, "That one's for free," as an ironic hint, because he's a prisoner and he isn't being paid. This film is a great allegory for so many things: - an existential crisis for a human being reckoning with their mortality from their limited point of view in the universe (philosophy was a big theme in 90s film) - realizing your abusive family or church or boss or government has been lying to you and taking advantage of you, until you think for yourself and leave to live life on your own terms. The abusive parent doesn't get to see or know how you're doing once you're gone. It's a terrifying choice to leave the safety net of the devil you know, and step into the unknown, especially if you've been taught to be afraid of the world your whole life. The controlling authoritarian government theme is a lot like 1984's "fifteen minutes of hate," where citizens watch 15 minutes of propaganda about enemies of the state who are portrayed as bad, less than human, dangerous, and coming to get them, etc, to justify endless human rights abuses and endless wars. The travel agency posters were telling Truman to stay small and afraid inside his bubble, because of the endless "threats" outside. The walls of the Burbank theater are like the boundaries of the known world for us, especially since most of us only understand the wider world through the lens of what we're shown. Internet search engines are becoming more and more censored, not just in China, and what people see is usually determined by an algorithm that shows them what matches their internet activity and what gets the most engagement. So people go from uneducated and unsure about medical science to fully antivax and believing it's a good idea to swab hospitalized kids' mouths for measles and transfer it to their own kids' mouths for "better immunity" than the vaccine (an actual PICU nurse did this in Texas while caring for a kid who was critically ill with measles, because she was in an antivax Facebook group and posted about it). A lot of people still think most of Africa is people starving in the dirt, or that the Middle East is fully populated by terrorists, or that slavery and the holocaust were never "that bad," because they attended a super conservative/overly religious school that didn't teach them about history, and still think that way because they stay inside their Truman Show internet bubble and don't think for themselves. Think for yourselves. Touch the painted sky and read books that are "bad for you."

.

Mason Quinn and Answer are right, the fact we don't see Truman after he leaves the set is actually powerful. We are part of the audience, and we don't get to see what happens with him next. It's his life, he gets to choose, he gets to go wherever he wants. We can assume that Sylvia went to meet him outside of the dome. This movie is so good. And it was quite ahead of its time.

Ryan Holmes

I don't understand the people who only want first time watches. So many good movies to revisit

Jordan_Sal 413

Please do Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Cameron Kerby

As well as Me, Myself and Irene for Mason Quinn’s first time watch.

Cameron Kerby

Guys can we get an Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind reaction soon? Also, we need a Me, Myself and Irene reaction as well since Mr. Mason Quinn hasn’t seen it.

ias

I love how this movie becomes more and more relevant with time.

I'm Batman

Nah, that ending gave me MAJOR blue balls. I wanted to see them get together, major abrupt ending lol. Still, excellent movie, had a lot of fun with this one. 4/5 answers for me.

Mister Lou

This and the Matrix totally blew my mind! And when things in life feels a bit too perfect or just feels off like life can be scripted i no longer feel like "wow that was a crazy coincidence" it feels more like, "is my life Truman Show?" Or "are we really in the Matrix?"

Patrick DaCosta

Imagine the lawyers lining up for Truman to get paid for the show. Also, who's gonna stop the same corporation from adopting another unwanted pregnancy to continue the show. This could be a sequel and Jim Carrey could return as Truman to save the new Truman.

Aubrey

I saw this one in theaters and was so unsettled by it that I never watched it again! Obviously I made an exception for our favorite guys tonight, but I think I'm more unnerved now than I was 28 years ago.

Marie RammGirl

First time watch for me & It's quite unsettling once ya know the truth of the world. The best part of this reaction though is DD/Oak's reaction over the ending, as I too had exact same feeling of like "Hey! we don't get to see the outcome of Truman/Sylvia?!" Quinn's "It's Over, We Don't Get To See What Truman Does Anymore & You're Sick For Wanting To Watch Him" 😆😂 gave me a good laugh as kinda valid point hehe, but it's cause we all like closure in movies. Ed Harris played the role of the Villain perfectly to a T to get that kinda reaction out of DD/Oak & Quinn/Answer's laughter over it was great. 🤣 💙

Ginger

This is one of my favorite movies of all time along with The Fugitive, The Neverending Story, Goonies, LOTR, Dave, Ever After, to name a few. Best Jim Carey movie ever imo. I totally agree with Oak’s rating.

Annie519

This movie has held up so well, I absolutely love it. As great as Jim is, I think Laura Linney steals the show. Her facial expressions are fantastic. Three comes to mind, one is with the flashback when they're at the dance, you see her constantly giving the side-eye to Sylvia, like she's saying "this is my role." And the second, when they are in the car and she keeps looking back at the camera, trying to stay in character and telling the audience that everything is okay while also begging for help. And the third, when she has to do the cocoa ad. She is just great in the entire scene! I have to say though, I have always felt for Marlon. This is a guy that literally has been a part of the show practically his whole life, since he was 7. It is very possible that he did have a genuine friendship with him. It's all he knows and during the scene when Christoff is feeding him the lines I always saw it as him not wanting to say it, that it hurts to lie to him. There are two very interesting deleted scenes that showcases this. One is showing the cast have a meeting, where they're going into what's going to happen on the show after Meryl left and Christoff saying how he still plans for Truman to have baby and Marlon is clearly not on board with it. And the other, he actually finds Truman getting in the boat after he escaped, but he let's go. There's also some very clever details, like when Meryl is going to work after Truman notices the picture, there is a bottle of Vitamin C. They obviously take that since they don't get natural light. All the cameras are fun to spot. But also, early in the movie when he's gardening he is in the exact spot where he escaped from. So, I think Truman always knew something was not right, probably ever since Sylvia. But he didn't know what, so he kept playing dumb and was secretly looking for a way out, even though he didn't know what was going on.

Tania R

Aww, Oak and DD 😂 You don’t get to see Truman with Sylvia! They’re not your entertainment anymore - The Truman Show is over now! 🩷🩵

Tania R

I can definitely see how this connects to the world we live in today, but honestly, the concept itself just wasn’t that groundbreaking for me, even for 1998. I completely agree with Oak and DD though - the whole thing is fucked up. The executives were willing to go that far for entertainment, while the audience was willing to keep watching it happen. Sylvia was one of the few who actually questioned it, which is probably why she was easily my favourite 🩷🩵 Overall, about a 3.3 for me!

Chris Evert

I feel bad for Truman but I've also always wondered about what's going on in Marlon's head. They have been best friends since they were 7 which means he has been lying to Truman since he was really young. When he said, "The last thing I'd ever do is lie to you," was it guilt on his face or just acting? Didn't he ever develop a genuine concern for Truman since they've been together through their developmental years? Or has lying been institutionalized from such a young age that he feels no guilt doing it as an adult? I think it's just as cruel to subject a young boy to that kind of life. To know exactly what's going on and to be taught how to deceive at such a young age and do it everyday.

Tania R

One thing I completely agree with you guys on is rewatches! I think Jurassic Park was actually one of my very first requests, about a year ago. I’d love to rewatch it with all of you - honestly, I’d happily do the whole series. Completely on board with this! 🦖🩷

Esther K

Oak and his memes. LOL

r

what a movie, what a concept. one of my all time favorites. ugh. that last line always hits so hard

r

"it's over, we dont get to see what Truman does anymore" EXACTLY MASON

Kayla

This movie you could easily rewatch and write a new paper about it. Could rewatch it and just focus on the extras. Marlon even like realizing he was 7 when he got “pneumonia”, the behind the scenes it was cause the kid didnt want to keep lying to his friend and i think he had a breakdown. A 7 year old kid could tell that it was wrong having Truman living this life. Incredible well written film that has layers upon layers in it.

Donna Castellano

Andrew Niccol - the writer for this movie - has written 2 of my absolute favorite movies in the sci-fi genre - GATTACA and S1m0ne. S1m0ne would definitely be my recommendation to watch sooner rather than later, given it predicted all this 💩going on with AI produced actors. I think the reason it flopped in the theatres because people never thought AI could get to the point it could convincingly create actors in films. I HIGHLY recommend it. I need to find your recommendations list and put it along with GATTACA on there.

Donna Castellano

I recommended one of Andrew Niccol's other films - S1m0ne. It's really more relevant now than it was 25 years ago, with AI beginning to generate actors for films.

Donna Castellano

EdTV always came off more like reality TV than this messed up concept. At least Ed entered that contract willingly.

Sven

First time watch for me and I've had a blast watching it with you guys. I honestly didnt expect it to be this good.

Katie Lee

Loved this reaction soooo much!!! Also side note, PLEASE react to life of Pi, I think you guys will love it! It’s an amazing film, visually stunning and the ending will have your jaws on the floor!
