The Charge of the Light Brigade was a military action undertaken by British light cavalry against Russian forces during the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War, resulting in many casualties to the cavalry. On 25 October 1854, the Light Brigade, led by Lord Cardigan, mounted a frontal assault against a Russian artillery battery which was well-prepared with excellent fields of defensive fire. The charge was the result of a misunderstood order from the commander-in-chief, Lord Raglan, who had intended the Light Brigade to attack a different objective for which light cavalry was better suited, to prevent the Russians from removing captured guns from overrun Turkish positions. The Light Brigade made its charge under withering direct fire and reached its target, scattering some of the gunners, but was forced to retreat immediately.

Really excited to listen to this one!

I thought the sketch was brought back?

citationpod

Sorry I changed the file out on accident. Should have a skit now.

AtheistEagleScout

No before show shenanigans? Advert in the apropos of nothing?

Thorn

Am I the only one for whom the episode stops at about 21 minutes and then restarts over and over?

citationpod

If you are listening on a device and it was downloaded - it is possible I switched the file while it was buffering. The original file I put here was the wide release and replaced it with the patreon version a few minutes after it was posted here.

Angi Watt

Are Patrons supposed to be getting mid-episode ads? I don't know about Gloryhole Studios, but I thought the PIAT model was to insert them after the show. If that's not the policy, can I advocate for it? I strongly prefer it that way.

Hi - It put the wrong file in there. The file has been replaced. Sorry about that.

Angi Watt

Appreciate that. Thanks for the quick reply!

Oh squeee! I did a 50 page research paper on this at Uni. Watched that delightful movie from the 60’s too. The whole Lucan/Raglan/Cardigan prissy rivalry would have been so fun had it not led to a literal massacre of soldiers who died wearing really tight cherry colored trousers.

Have you guys done The Great Emu War? I’ve not come across it if you have and it seems right up your alley. Also, great episode as always!

Jason Otero

Oh excellent. I’m excited to listen!

I was an English Lit professor for 14 years, and I had no idea how much this charge was romanticized. By a Romantic poet. Fuck. Love y'all!

Kevin (Nevu)

The US version of this (Pickett's charge) is somehow almost the exact same but dumber. Dumber in two senses. One, that dumb order was actually intentional, and two, it is still celebrated by racists everywhere due to being the furthest North that the Confederates reached.

Really enjoyed the episode! My 3x great grandad fought in the Crimean War and I’ve been able to find his war records. He wasn’t as fancy as the people mentioned in the episode - he was just a former labourer who was a Private in the British Army. He fought in the battles of Alma, Balaklava, Inkerman and finally Sevastopol where he was hit by a shell in the trenches and had to have his leg amputated.

BT Dubs

Yeah, Stuff You Should Know missed that note as well. Disappointing.
