Optography is the process of viewing or retrieving an optogram, an image on the retina of the eye. A belief that the eye "recorded" the last image seen before death was widespread in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and was a frequent plot device in fiction of the time, to the extent that police photographed the victims' eyes in several real-life murder investigations, in case the theory was true. The concept has been repeatedly debunked as a forensic method.Wife selling is the practice of exactly the terrifying thing that it sounds like. We also talked about that. We did NOT include an image for the episode header.

On the Apple Podcast feed, there’s a typo that it’s “Optograms and Wife Salves.” I spent the whole episode in suspense about what kind of salves olde timey folks were applying to their wives, only to find out that they were just selling women.

When the scientist was doing the first optogram, he already knew what the rabbit was looking at, so of course it looked convincing. It’s amazing how often pseudoscientists make that mistake. They’re aiming to confirm their suspicions, not disprove.

Now I want to write a murder mystery that takes place on moving day and they try to solve it with optograms. The victim? A wife who was sold, of course.
