Richard Marlowe

Is there an RSS feed to plug into my podcast app of choice for the patron version?

Michael Petro

I must have posted this will article a hundred times... Once this goes live ... Prepare my racist friends.... Eh they just say Wikipedia is revisionist history.... Racist always have an excuse

Tyler

Odd how the colloquial American definition of 'peruse' has completely flipped meaning to the point that Merriam-Webster's top two entries are: a : to examine or consider with attention and in detail : study b : to look over or through in a casual or cursory manner i.e. ( X == X ) && ( X == !X ), guess that's why Boole wasn't a linguist. It literally pulled a "literally", just longer ago.

Historian_Jil

Yup, it's a contranym. There are more of them then you might think.

The Gray Hunter

And real historians who merely point out the actual complications and clusterfuck of decades of compromise (to keep viable a long obsolete concept... kinda like religion) will be labeled racists by people superimposing 21st century values onto 19th century people and attitudes. Wiki actually does pretty well at being neutral.

Tyler

Oh, I'm sure. Even among those that have codified writing systems, the evolution language is kind of a "Jesus take the wheel" process. Since you brought up contranyms, I think "deceptively" is my favorite one in English.

Tyler

Yep. Check the sidebar of the Overview page or the confirmation email Patreon sent you when you signed up. *But... 1. I have never gotten their "Copy to Clipboard" button to work on any mobile web browser -- kind of defeating the entire point of having it in the first place. Hence why I brought up the email: Nice, big, copy-able text span. 2. While the Patreon RSS feeds used to update immediately after publishing, in the last month or so there's been a good 10-20 min delay. This could be an issue with my podcatcher, so take that with a grain of salt to taste.

The Gray Hunter

"Fulsome" is becoming one. — adjective ***Offensive to good taste, especially as being excessive; *** Overdone or gross: fulsome praise that embarrassed her deeply; fulsome décor. ;***Disgusting, sickening; repulsive: a table heaped with fulsome mounds of greasy foods. ***Excessively or insincerely lavish: fulsome admiration. *** Encompassing all aspects; comprehensive: a fulsome survey of the political situation in Central America. abundant or copious. The definitions seem to have skewered it to have positive connotations ignoring how it's really a negative word.

Tyler

Interesting! I guess I don't use or hear 'fulsome' enough to have noticed the drift. The etymology is a fine example of good ol' Anglo-Saxon concision. "The quality of being full (of vomit)"

The Gray Hunter

Ugh! This fucking Southern Lost Cause crap is the #1 thing that keeps the South swimming in crap. What a great place it would be without it. The West suffers a bit of the same thing with that "Frontier Pioneer Freedom" thing. And friggin' TX has both! To both these stupid syndromes I say: You do not want to live in the fucking 19th century.

In American English, to table a subject means to delay talking about it, possibly indefinitely. In British English it means the exact opposite: to decide to discuss it right now.

Mariusz 'Kot' Butrykowski

Yes, they most probably DID have hamster wheels powered by slaves. They were called threadwheels. And since the British used them in prisons as punishment, the probability of them being present in the south of the US is high. I can't tell though, amazon spams google results with hamster wheels and gym equipment.

Tony Agudo

Am I the only one who downloaded this episode but the ID3 tags list it as a Cog Dis episode?

citationpod

Sorry about that. I sometimes work on autopilot. Just reflexive. I fixed it.

Lisa McLain

Georgia wasn't the only state that taught revisionist history. I was taught that the civil war was about state rights in California.

Emma Crawford

I learned revisionist history on the civil war while I was home schooled in Michigan! (Abeka and ACE) :/
