Excellent episode, but I don't wanna become a Patron...wait....what?

Man I played this game constantly years ago. Fun right up until I ran out of things to do without joining a nullsec alliance. That's no different than signing up for a second job you have to pay for.

OH man, I was wondering if this would ever make it on here. This game took 8-years plus of my life. Made some good friends from Germany, the UK and New Zealand that I still have today. Looking back though, there were better things I could have been doing with my time.

I still play Eve on occasion. The game is fucking brutal but I find a lot of current and ex-military friends on there.

"Understanding the full implications of what happened on September 11 will likely take years" ... well that says it all really. Funny read, long form article on video game betrayal

Wait, how much do I have to pledge to get you to NOT read me Harry Potter fan fiction?

On the topic of funerals, it's relatively common for pilots in corps who die in for their corp/alliance mates to hold a "cyno vigil" for the deceased. The cyno beacon is meant for capital ships to find their way. https://kotaku.com/an-eve-online-funeral-means-ozone-light-vigils-and-spac-1832765360 Also, there's 3-4 general metagames going on in EVE, based on the space they live in. Nullsec (player owned) is the most focused-on, but there's also Lowsec (NPC space with some restrictions), and highsec (where griefing is sanctioned by the cops or planned around). Then there's wormhole space, which is like nullsec except there's no fixed point of entry or exit.

It's also very common practice to perform several screenings of prospective new pilots into a corp to avoid spies. Yes, my player avatar is my primary EVE pilot. No, I'm not currently an active player.

Not an Eve player but isn't the big punchline to this story that the game is Pay to win now? Only read a small amount about it so I may be wrong.

Not really? I mean wallet warriors are around, but everything is still more or less player-made. So it's just shuffling money around and those with the inside track on production are still going to do pretty well. Really what PLEX gets you is the ability to forgo all PvE if you just want to spend $$$ to get your ISK and have it be relatively straightforward. Or do gambling stuff. Also, the ability to convert real money to ISK has been sanctioned since the olden days of Gametime code (GTC).

Honestly, the WOW pandemic could be its own episode. How it happened, how Blizzard reacted, and how the CDC tried to investigate it are really interesting and there's a lot more to it than you would expect. It also has a lot of very eerie parallels with the response to the COVID pandemic.

EVE has always been an MMO litmus test for me. Most gamers I've met that play Eve have been the worst
