That Laura is raped and it’s not treated as that big a deal is the big tell that this was written in earnest by a child. If it were by a guy writing it ironically like the one who does the Garfield stories it would be played up or snarked about for shock value, but Laura was just naively blithe about it.

I assume she's 10, because that's exactly the type of self insert a child writes, and there's a 10 year time skip after Laura is found as a baby. But she could be younger than 10, since it's also pretty common for kids to wish they were older (so it would also make sense for the self insert to be older than the author).
