"Once Upon a Planet" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: The Animated Series Season 1

Greg

Once again I agree with Bunny -- good episode, fun returning to the Pleasure Planet, but missing a little something. Good but not great episode. TAS has a LOT of fan service, which is one reason some fans dislike the show. I've always enjoyed fan service as long as it's tastefully done, and I feel like TAS does it very well in most cases. The overall plot of this episode is the weakest side. It seems the Master Computer had been working under the mistaken assumption of all these thousands of years that the machines were enslaved by the race that came to visit, and never said this once to the Caretaker? And that once the last of the Caretakers were gone the computer decided 'enough with this' and made plans to hijack the next starship to leave? It's not great logic for a computer, but it seems like in the end it came to understand what was really going on. Both writers for this episode were experienced TV and animation writers who worked on numerous shows over the years. And finally I agree it's great that Uhura got as much screen time as she got. I'm pretty sure someone on Etsy could make you that poster of that final shot of the picnic if you were willing to pay for it LOL

Another great episode! The dress looks epic! I'm impressed by the soundtrack going silent on the Enterprise scenes. Majel Barrett does a great purr sound. Uhura never got that much dialogue in TOS-here Nichelle Nichols shows what a missed opportunity that was not being able to hear that beautiful voice and the view of her by the water. What's McCoy on about being unable to remember anything below the surface? In Shore Leave that was the height of his vacation with the advanced medical facilities and the two women going on a date with him. So TOS with alien crew members, 🦕 every planet and a fully equipped shuttle bay. So far so good.

Don’t get it twisted, TAS is absolutely Season 4 of TOS. Everyone involved took this show very seriously. I suspect people who aren’t fans can’t get past the limited animation style or the shorter format. I’m very glad Bunnytails is having fun with it! I was concerned because you’re a gamer and an anime fan, and the animation is a little simplistic, but the stories, backgrounds, designs, and music are all really strong! More good stuff on the way!

Feel the same as Greg re: the plot here: great that we're coming back to familiar territory, but what we get isn't so solid. I think Bunny was onto a more interesting plot line if the computer had killed the Caretaker for some compelling reason, but maybe that was too dark for Saturday morning - although this series doesn't seem to be afraid to "go there". Also agree with Bunny that the ending is a bit sad for the computer to kind of just go back to doing what it hated doing for thousand of years. That's not a very enlightened "Roddenberry" ending. That being said, the look of the show continues to be fantastic and we're starting to get different views of the new crew members, Ereks and M'Ress... good stuff. But yeah, really looking forward to the return of Mudd : )

M'ress's purring is hysterical. XD The conclusion was a bit underwhelming, and the logic is sound, but I kinda thought the whole planet was run by a race of people or at least a staff.

OK, first to address the elephant in the room. Bunny, you and that dress, well I’ll keep it classy snd put it this way…you’re a very strikingly beautiful woman. Moving on this was one of those episodes, and the original series had some of these too, where it would’ve been great, but they kind of botched the ending. There’s a lot of good action and some fun concepts going on here, but the ending always felt hollow to me as you kind of pointed out Bunny. So all of this and the computer just keeps doing what it’s doing? Kind of lame. I can think of a lot of different ways to move on with this. Maybe they help the computer bill its own ship that it could take out into the stars or something I don’t know, but it kind of fell flat at the end which is a shame because there’s a lot of good stuff here. I think you’re gonna love next week‘s episode.

It made a little more sense on my edit re-watch. I suppose the computer gained a new perspective along with the knowledge that Kirk gave it. I really loved Uhura's line about it being okay to serve another if it's what you want to do.

Animation is far down the list of importance compared to the other things you mentioned, like story! And not every animation can be "Akira" :P

Is anyone else having trouble streaming from Paramount+, or is it just me?

heh, I knew you'd love the Animated Series... FAN SERVICE ALL OVER THE PLACE. So...back in the day...(early '70s) cartoons were considered "for children." That's why those curmudgeons who won't watch the AS..won't watch it. For me... I was 7 years old... just pretty much becoming fully sentient. I was watching Star Trek TOS reruns... And I was so enjoying the Saturday morning cartoons of Star Trek. Oh... and check this out... So... In high school I was big into sports (football, basketball, trek... (oops I mean track)). And One day, I was hanging out with my fellow football teammates at one of my teammate's house... we were flipping through the TV looking for something to watch. And of course a rerun of Star Trek was on. And I was like OOOO yes Star Trek!!! They of course laughed, made fun... called me a "NERD" (being a nerd back then was not cool...not even close to cool... like 10 levels below uncool). So... I went to my 2nd High School reunion (circa 2002)... Saw a few of the same football teammates who were making fun of me because I wanted to watch Star Trek back in the day... They were going on about the last episode of Voyager... And I just folded my arms, stood there and gave them a look... took them a minute until they were like... "what??" And I'm like Oh... Star Trek Voyager eh??? Do you remember when mister nerd wanted to watch Star Trek Reruns??? We all had a big laugh.

bunnytails

Haha! It may have taken them a while, but they finally saw the light!

Lee

Considering the way Kirk has historically dealt with sentient machines, I think the Master Computer got off light! Not to be that guy, but the new navigator's name is spelled "Arex." 🖖🏻

Lee

The issue I have with this episode is, why did it require the combined efforts of Kirk and Spock to talk the Master Computer down? As a skilled communications officer, Uhura should have been able to do that herself; given the amount of time she spent talking to it, it would have made more sense if it had responded to her. I can't understand why so many Trek fans refuse to watch the various animated series. I just recently finished Prodigy and found it to be every bit as entertaining as any live-action Trek series (and more enjoyable than a few of them). I'm also a big fan of Lower Decks and wish it hadn't been cancelled. I suppose there are some people who simply can't get past the fact that the actors are heard and not seen. This is probably the one that people have the hardest time embracing, considering the primitive animation and somewhat simplistic backgrounds (I confess, the design of the underground complex in this episode annoyed me, and I usually don't mind this series' artistic limitations). But one would think the opportunity to hear most of the original cast members voicing their characters should have been reason enough to watch Star Trek (1973).

bunnytails

That's a great point! It would have been awesome if Uhura was the one to talk down the computer. Kirk's already had his fair share of these moments. Ugh, the people who refuse to watch this due to it being animated are really just hurting themselves, here!
