"The Terratin Incident" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: The Animated Series Season 1

Skyman's Follies

Very cool episode w sort of "Wink of an Eye" vibes... loved the visuals... tho I'm sure the science doesn't make any sense? Also, anyone else catch the yellow-shirt on the planet with glasses? Is that a Star Trek first (and last)?

Greg

I have mixed feelings about this episode, so I guess I'll just list out the good and the bad of it as I see it: The good -- this is a great plot idea. The script was written by Paul Schneider who wrote the script for one of my top Star Trek episodes of all time, Balance of Terror, along with Squire of Gothos, so he got Star Trek. Roddenberry had made the original request for a Star Trek episode based loosely on the idea of Gulliver's Travels and Paul delivered a really strong script. This is also something that REALLY suited animation very well. It would have been very hard to do this episode in a regular Star Trek show, perhaps impossible, during this time period. Great use of animation here being able to go above and beyond what they could do with the original show. A lot of people got screen time here, the episode was fast moving without even a wasted second, and the idea of the name of the episode is great -- a lost Earth colony, that nobody knows about, shrunk down to tiny size and their name of 'Terra Ten' being corrupted to Terratin. The bad -- the plot had MAJOR holes again, which I think is caused due to the half hour long format. Was the only way the city ACTUALLY able to communicate with the Enterprise by attacking them with shrink rays? Why not just hail them as they clearly could communicate via two way as we saw later in the episode? I assume the planet was always not so unstable and volcanic. The transporter again does things here in this episode which really don't connect with later Star Trek (although the transporter IS the most loosy-goosy thing in Star Trek anyway, so I'll give it a pass). And why couldn't the Terratin people be made full size again, like the crew of the Enterprise was? I think I heard something about therm being suck at that size for some reason, but it's not really explained. And why take the risk of placing the city on a new planet? If they were TRULY stuck at that size, I would think a Starbase or somewhere on Earth would be a safer and more stable place. Also I don't like how Sulu acts here. He's so calm and collected all the time, him panicking in this ONE place bothers me as it just doesn't fit his character. Overall I think this is a average episode, only held back by the major plot problems I addressed above. Again it's an example of a good idea hurt by execution.

Good call back to Paul Schneider... I didn't make the connection, but this episode DID feel like it had TOS-level vibes throughout. TAS had so many good writers... I feel like one of the great things they had going was a decent mystery built into the plots not usually revealed until the end, not unlike TOS.

If only the rights owners of this series would take the challenge of remastering this series by (1) bring in additional voice talent to re-record the many guest characters, adding depth and variety to the stories and (2) have an experienced composer score each episode individually. These episodes could then be packaged along with the originals as a special edition.

I agree with bunny's wish for more story time while appreciating the value of getting to the point of the episode quickly. In my case I prefer the plot not being spoiled but at my age I can do with help following what's happening and spoilers and recaps of what occurred fifteen minutes before help. This episode is a lot of fun, especially Uhura, Sulu, and Chapel's max adorableness. So they can do that now part#: run a transportation beam through the phaser banks. Good observations about the Terratin going forward. Maybe they can adjust their size using the transporter before they get to the colony. Great job episode & I'd give it an A! Thanks bunny!

A pseudo spoiler. Not so much that it can give away anything. But this is not the only Shrinky-dink episode in the Star Trek-verse. I actually enjoyed it the whole time. I agree with Greg, Sulu was way out of character. And I fully expected Nurse Chappel to be harpooned by Kirk in the fish tank.

I wasn't even thinking about Wink of an Eye, but yes, you're so right!

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

A very good, solid sci-fi story. The "shrinking heroes" trope is usually a fun one and its done very well here and with a very "Trek" flavor. Shrinking episodes/movie/whatever, can often end up looking a little corny depending on how well the special effects are pulled off (especially back in this time period. HISTK looked very good but some of the examples from the 60s and 70s really don’t hold up well). The nice thing is that the animation format lets them to show what they want without those potential pitfalls. Like Bunny I really felt the shorter run time in this one though. Not because the pacing was off or anything, just that I would have enjoyed another 20 minutes of "Tiny Trek" shenanigans.

Wow, that was a nice fake out at the end. I almost thought Kirk would actually vaporize them. Stranger things have happened in this animated series.

bunnytails

Yes! More Tiny Trek shenanigans please!
