"Albatross" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: The Animated Series Season 2

I really like this episode also, Bunny, and gave it the same high marks that you did. Looking online it seems you and I rank the episode a bit higher then most folks, who only place it in the 'average' category. Yes, the plot idea has been done before, but it's fast paced, fun, has good character banter, and doesn't have many gaping plot holes like a lot of TAS. Yes, the aliens are QUITE tell -- if I had to guess, I'd say they are about 7-8 feet in height. We didn't see any women either, which makes me wonder if they are a one sex species. (Yes, they could have been left out on purpose to save time and money, but they could have easily tweaked one of the male aliens I feel like). Cool design on them as well, with the eyes and the strange hands that are half hands and half tentacles. Related to that, with the plague survivor that they find, I'm not sure if this is a animation error or an effect of surviving the plague, but he doesn't have any 'tentacles' on his hands, they are much simpler and fewer then the healthy ones. And speaking about the animation, it's a very cool and simple trick to say 'oh, one of the effects of the virus is the skin changes color' as that's a simple animation trick that they can do. (Although I do wonder why the scanners on the transporter didn't detect and remove the virus from their bodies when they beamed up.) It is curious the aliens decided to wait until the landing party was about to leave BEFORE they presented the warrant. It's like "Thanks for your help, we are really glad....oh, by the way, leave us your doctor please, he's wanted for murder." I suspect they were 'using' the Enterprise to get what they wanted before they sprung this on them. But once again this is an example of his law and order works in Star Trek -- it's similar to how the US Military operates, where if a uniformed member of a service is charged with a crime while stationed overseas, they are held and tried in accordance to the laws of that country. The US Military can (and has sometimes) requested that the service member be released back to them so they can be court martial themselves, but the host country is under no obligation to do that. Even a warrant from a non Federation planet (such as this one) will be recognized by the Federation if there are grounds for it. But it makes me wonder, the warrant HAD to be new (just obtained) cause otherwise the Federation would have contacted McCoy about it, but Kirk says they are out of communications range due to the aurora? I'm not sure what's going on here, but as I said, this episode had fewer plot holes then most TAS episodes so I'll live with it, LOL For a change, James Doohan did NOT do all the voices for this episode! Filmation co-founder Lou Scheimer supplied the voice of Draman guard, while James Doohan voiced the Draman Supreme Prefect as well as plague survivor Kol-Tai. I couldn't find anything about the writer Dario Finelli. I also don't know WHY this episode has the name it does (perhaps someone else can clue me in). Finally, this is the last time we see Nurse Chapel in TAS.

Sorry for a second post, this seems as good a place to mention it. It looks like that MOST, if not ALL, of the TAS episodes were expanded for book form, with a larger more fleshed out story, by author Alan Dean Foster. There were 10 books all together. One by itself is not that expensive, however, if you want the full set, it's going to cost you. Perhaps add this to your Throne? :) https://www.amazon.com/COMPLETE-SET-STAR-TREK-BOOKS/dp/B001NRHRL4/ref=sr_1_4

A good episode about Kirk/Spock/McCoy looking out for each other. Something that never went away!

“Solid” and “straightforward “ are good descriptions of this one. Enjoyable but pretty simple. For me the best moment was Spock saying to Bones basically “ you know if you go to the enterprise and you don’t find a cure you’re gonna die too” and Bones just brushes. It aside with “I’m a DOCTOR Spock!” Strong little character moment there. Also, it’s always fun when you get the dynamic of Spock and Bones being basically an unbeatable team when they work together, but then they just have to needle each other once the pressure is off. Good stuff. Love the alien designs here and the backgrounds are gorgeously drawn yet again. The major weak point, as you picked up on Bunny, is the rather contrived way of getting Demos on board the Enterprise. Not only was the whole “whoops, we left the doors open “ thing is kind of absurd but I’m pretty sure that docking like that should be impossible at warp speed by rules already established somewhere in TOS. (can’t remember where , I wanna say Galileo 7 maybe?) anyway itas a relatively minor quibble. Still a nice fun episode.

BUNNY! I feel like a Vulcan...on that Vulcan ship that was devoured by the Space Amoeba... Astonished! No way you're pushing 40... Astonishment.

William Terry

The title is a reference to an albatross that brings fog and mist to a ship and also good fortune. All the crew dies except for the ancient Mariner. The aurora, the plague survivor, and probably more are plugged into the story. I had to look it up as the writer knows Coleridge more than I. Things I like: the LP getting a process server; the vibrant colors; the radiation caused plague and that whole plot. Bunny yelling at the aliens "leave my bones alone!" My vote for best character is a tie between McCoy and Spock, sort of like TOS. Special commendation for the cool jazz trumpet in the transition music. A- (minus) for everything with the alien voices sounding too earth like but Spock joking McCoy is more a pharmacist than a medical hero and the Hippocratic oath saying first do no harm makes me think Spock was suggesting McCoy over prescribes. Great reacts bunny! I'm looking forward to seeing what you have planned for bunnytails reacts and convinced it will be awesome!

Well… I don’t want to get all pedantic about it but it’s a bit more complicated than that. Suffice it to say that “albatross“ is in reference to an “undeserved burden or weight of guilt”as in the Coleridge poem. Kudos though for catching that though man! And here I was talking about how simple this episode was.

The direction and performances are particularly fluid and natural in this episode. That said, Happy Birthday! Wish I was your age.

The books were well written and caught the attention of Gene Roddenberry, who was so impressed, he brought Foster on board to develop the story that became Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Studio politics kept him from writing the screenplay as well.

I never knew of these meanings of Albatross. Thanks guys!

"Also, it’s always fun when you get the dynamic of Spock and Bones being basically an unbeatable team when they work together, but then they just have to needle each other once the pressure is off." Perfect description!
