Star Trek: The Next Generation 1x3 - Full Watchalong

Summer

Its great to watch with you, rotten spoilers, no one knows why Riker’s reacrion was so mild.

Bret Kay

This is a fun episode, but I agree it's an interesting choice for the second episode of the show. We don't know the characters well yet, so we can't get the deep moments with Spock/Kirk, but it was still enjoyable to watch.

William Terry

Funny episode, great reacts, OMG this is going to take a lot a effort to keep spoilers out of my comments! My takeaway is that, except for the Reefer Madness angle in both Naked Time and Naked Now where women make love to men on the spot, there is a difference between the two infections. In NT they're mostly tripping balls from LSD while NN looks like a three day bender. Riker's response is classic sober while drunk and doing a pub crawl. I give the point to NT, for the close of the episode exchange between Kirk and Spock, briefly referenced by bunny, plus Sulu running around without his shirt!

TV network execs wanted to air this episode asap to get new normie viewers interested/excited/hooked asap! Lol ;)

I also agree this episode would have been a little better if it was later in the season. A lot of people dislike this episode, but I always really liked it. Beyond being a great callback to one of my favorite TOS episodes, it's one of the best episodes of the first season, and would even make my Top 25 list for the whole show. That said, I DO understand why this episode was shown so early. Since it's a spiritual sequel to a TOS episode, Gene and the others wanted to help hook new viewers as well as bring in folks old enough to have watched TOS in the 60's. The Tsiolkovsky in this episode is a Oberth class ship -- last seen as the poor USS Grissom in Star Trek 3. It might even be the same model. Like the Excelsior class, it's lasted a long time in Starfleet service. The production crew was also trying to take full advantage of the fact the show was in syndication. They could get away with A LOT more now with that system in the late 1980's then they could on network TV 20 years earlier. Your right about Riker's infection being slower then others, but I seem to recall some people in the original episode taking a long time also. Some fun trivia for this episode -- It was funny to hear you say that about Tasha and 'not being naked' cause it was around this time that Denise Crosby did a very infamous shoot for Playboy magazine. Yes, the woman with the blonde hair (whose name I can't recall) is the chief engineer of the ship. Finally, I don't think the show ever outright SAYS this -- I figured it out as I went along -- so I don't see the harm in explaining how rank works in TNG (and later shows) in case you haven't observed it yet. Compared to TOS when it could be hard to determine rank by the uniforms and the stripes, from TNG on they use pips -- the dots attached to the uniform collar next to the neck -- to show rank. From lowest to highest: 1 pip -- Ensign 1 pip and 1 half (empty) pip -- Lt. JG 2 pips -- Lt 2 pips and 1 half pip -- Lt. Commander 3 pips -- Commander 4 pips -- Captain Cadets and Admirals have their own badges in place of the pips. The colors still matter also (changed for the various departments) but the pips make it very easy to tell at a glance someone's rank and where they would fit in with a ship, base, etc. And finally at the end with the talk about the Wheatons and Felicia Day -- I always really enjoyed Felicia and her work also, and she hasn't done much as of late, so it was a very welcome surprise to find that she voiced a major character (your tutorial and guide, mostly) for the recently released game Date Everything, which has a HUGE voice cast of over 100 people and was a blast to play.

A bit of a campy episode; things will get better. I felt there was a bit of a hole in the plot. If we were going to have one of the characters be resistant or immune to a biologic invader, would we not think it would be Data, since his internals are wires and circuits? I never got the explanation of how he could succumb to the contagion, just based on an outer skin coating?

Carlos Stevens

Bunny, I have literally been keeping my mouth clamped shut about this episode from day 1, and how it was a call to The Naked Time from TOS. Makes me sad how people just don't understand... NO SPOILERS!!! However, the one thing that most stood out to me was how they used the same background music (updated of course) in this episode that they did in The Naked Time. I would say more about it, but... NO SPOILERS!!!

Carlos Stevens

As Captain Picard would say... "Rubbish."

Carlos Stevens

I think it was a good segue episode into the new kids on the Enterprise.

Carlos Stevens

But wait... did not Data say that if you prick him, does he not... bleek?

Carlos Stevens

Also a call back to "Why thank you...'Captain' McCoy."

Carlos Stevens

"Where No Man..." vs. "Where No One..." Yeah, no ONE has ever done the intro better than William Shatner from TOS. Even William agrees.

Carlos Stevens

I must say... "Captain" O'Riley was much better than "Captain" Crusher. "I'll take You HOOOOOME AAAGGAAAAINNNN Catheleeeeen."

Carlos Stevens

Bunny, I saw that obscure YouTube series with Felicia Day and (yes) W(h)il Wh(h)iton. But dang, can't remember what it was called. But I do remember seeing it just before Felicia Day did her appearance in Eureka.

John DiGiantomasso

One thing (not a spoiler) is that Gene Roddenberry thought it would be fantastically ironic if the navigator on the Enterprise was BLIND! Another observation is that in these earliest episodes you see new versions of the miniskirts worn by both women AND men! Those did not prove to be popular back in the day. "Where no ONE..."? Okay. Men in miniskirts? Please no.

Eric Rinehart

Very fun watchalong enjoy every moment as I watched on (Netflix Cdn ) So lookng forward to seeing and watching along and seeing when new characters official join the cast and how early on they do pretty much forgotten everything in Star Trek next generation

Stainless Steel Cat

I'd assume Riker wasn't affected so much because he's a real party animal and can hold his drink... er, mutated water molecules. Now if Scotty had been there he'd have got everything fixed long before he succumbed.

Desmond

Can't remember if they ever literally say this word on the show, but "skants" is what they are called.

Bret Kay

The Guild - that's a heck of a callback! I haven't seen it in years, but it was very popular, especially among MMO players at the time.

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

You made me lol. Bunny: “I feel like some people got blown if you know what I mean?” Indeed! “I hope she has her clothes on.” You might be the only one, Bunny. 😝Although the outfit we got was quite … memorable. Ha! Sorry , but this episode just kind of begs for those remarks! All that siad it IS very weird that the went right to an episode with characters acting abnormally when we are still getting to know thwpem and there characters are still being established. I always wondered what this concept would have looked like in a later season. Still, it’s a fun, if sort of goofy, episode IMO. I won’t spoil anything but there are several character dynamics here that do continue to be explored. And Data’s “fully functiona” line was an early internet “meme” of sorts. oh, and “having a snoot full” is a colloquialism for being drunk

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

A "snootful" is an old-timey way of saying someone has had too much to drink. Your snoot is your nose or more generally your face so having a snootful is like saying your full (in the head) of alcohol and presumably bad decisions. Regarding the spoilers, another reactor I follow always signs off with something to the effect of "If there's anything I've missed please feel free to put it in the comments, just keep it to this episode or previous episodes" and I really took that last bit to heart. The rule that I try to hold myself to is that there's so much to talk about within each ep that there's really no need to bring up bring anything else.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

"This is a really strange episode this early" It was the network's/writer's way of having the actors show off some range early on. Whether it was a good choice or not is of course another question. As modern day viewers we'd probably prefer some actual character development instead, but it's definitely the kind of decision that was common of tv at the time. The good news is that we have 7 long seasons to explore yet and get to know and develop our crew and I don't think it's spoilery to say that it'll be a very gratifying journey.

bunnytails

I guess Riker is just one tough cookie!

bunnytails

Wesley is pretty interesting so far!

bunnytails

Agreed, it was still enjoyable! Especially Data's physical comedy :)

bunnytails

I appreciate staying away from the spoilers!

bunnytails

Felicia is a mom now, so I'd say she's got her hands full with little... Calliope, I believe?

bunnytails

Oh, I thought Data was implying he was more than just wires and circuits inside there. A bit confusing!

bunnytails

I'm sorry :( I wish I could do something more to avoid spoilers aside from just.. avoiding reading comments altogether. I didn't notice about the music though, I'll have to go back and check that out!

bunnytails

If I were a vulcan, those miniskirts would definitely make me raise a single eyebrow! But as a mere human, I can only raise both at the same time..

bunnytails

Dang, it would be a lot easier if I could watch all these on Netflix. And cheaper, too!

bunnytails

Ahh, thanks for explaining snoot full!

bunnytails

I wonder how many of this other reactor's viewers stay till the very end of the episode to hear that message!

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I don't know. Depends on who's hanging out for the post ep analysis I would guess. If you are then you're probably in it until the end, or else you're someone who dips as soon as the episode is over. I mention it to say that "from this episode or previous episodes" is just a really clear cut way to think about what's ok to talk about and what's not. It's really obvious, of course, but it really helped put it in perspective for me.

Carlos Stevens

Thanks for that! I'm going to have to watch it again. (Just looked it up... the first episode was 18 YEARS AGO!!! damn...Now I feel old.) For the record... I played some of the first MMOs back in the day on the Arpanet...before the Internet was even a thing. Heck... now that I think of it, I used to play multiplayer games back when BBS's were a thing. Played in the beta of Ultima Online (sadly I missed the event when Lord British got killed... that was some epic gaming).

Carlos Stevens

It's very subtle (the music) and easy to miss. If you really want, I can rewatch and give you the timestamps.

Carlos Stevens

EGAD... just re-watched this episode... She literally mentioned The Guild. Guess I musta had a Snoot Full the first time.

Carlos Stevens

I'm pretty sure that the person who programmed him (spoilers edited out), programmed him to get intoxicated.

Edward M. Crowe

No, I disagree, but I will leave my comment in the "Star Trek Spoilers" tab of Bunny's Discord channel. (I assume you have access to that? If you don't, you should join -- it's a great time!).

Grey Invader

All these years later, I still don't understand how this virus infected Data. Or how an injection could cure him. I'm happy for him that he got laid though. Attaboy!
