Star Trek: The Next Generation 1x4 - Full Watchalong

Eric Rinehart

Always a pleasure to watch your reaction

Michael

If you’re only doing 1 episode a week it will take you 3 years and 3 months to finish, you’re fellow reactors Cinebinge are doing 3 episodes a week, I sure you have a schedule but would it be possible to squeeze 2 episodes a week?

Summer

Lets march on! Good seeing your reaction I dislike this episode more each time. But good seeing you watch it. Data and Geordi are great

Eric Rinehart

Ya they way I saw the episode from fresh eyes is the lead guy wanted the land original on his own terms as he saw Lt Yar demonstration he saw a powerful female that could match the strength of the female character as probably Yar could take her down and kidnapped her to make the number 1 jealous and duel her and hopefully she'd die so get the land for himself

Greg

A lot of people not only consider this one of the WORST episodes in ALL of Star Trek, but raciest as well. I never quite agreed with either of those feelings. No, the episode is not GREAT, but I can think of a number of episodes that I think are lower quality then this. The acting was very solid, the character development was interesting as we learn more about this new crew, the outfits and stages were cool, and there was some unique ideas given as to how this world conducted their culture. As for the racism, I just never saw that. Recently I read a post that Will Wheaton wrote in which he watched this episode for the first time since it came out (he had actually forgotten he had a role in this one, which years later I can't say I blame him!) and he didn't see it as raciest at all. To quote directly from the Wikipedia article that in turn quoted him: He said that it was not good, but that it was "not as overtly racist as I recalled. I mean, it's certainly not as racist as (an upcoming episode) is sexist, and if the Ligonians hadn't been arbitrarily determined to be entirely African American, it wouldn't have even been an issue." He said that the episode is an example of the type of episodes in the first season that would have resulted in the show being cancelled mid-season if it hadn't been so well supported by the fans and run directly into syndication. That's a good point also that Will raises -- the first season IS rough, as the growing pains were worked out and things got smoother in the years to come. There's many, IMHO, good episodes, but some 'meh' ones as well. It's never really QUITE explained about hoe Ligonian culture works, but I think Bunny is correct -- the men hold positions of political power, but the women own the land and the money, and so political marriages are common. Rule also seemed determined on you HAVING a wife with lots of land and money, so when the First Wife decided to go with another man instead, that's why he became the new ruler. The whole 'we need this rare vaccine' idea has been played to death, honestly -- we saw that in TOS several times and we'll see it again. I just wish there had been a better plot point used here. It's also a little slow and plodding along. This is the first time in a LONG time I've re-watched this episode, and I didn't find it quite as bad as I recall (having Bunny along for the ride was also great). I agree that Troi has huge eyes, but I always found them very attractive. Yar is tomboyish in many ways but she does have a softer side as Bunny pointed out -- although I never thought of her as being horny before, LOL I hope your still having fun with this Bunny, and can just nod and smile at what is coming up and just take it all in stride and not lose interest. LOL Finally, one small nitpick -- if this vaccine is so badly needed, why is the Enterprise only heading there at the end at Warp 3? Wouldn't you AT LEAST go Warp 8, if not Warp 9?

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I tend to have a high tolerance for the weaker episodes but even I look at this one and kinda go "yikes" 😬 lol It's probably the first one that pops into people's minds whenever we hear the "S1 and S2 suck" stuff. And like, whatever, lol it's not great but it's certainly not the worst episode of tv ever and I can even think of at least a couple of other TNG eps that I dislike more. And more screentime for Tasha certainly can't be a bad thing 🖖

Desmond

I think the best way to explain Yar's attraction to that guy is "it's 1987", lol. Definitely not TNG's finest hour.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Like, I'm usually the guy in the comments section defending the episodes that I know everyone else doesn't like ha ha

William Terry

This is kind of a one off episode with strong foreshadowing of some important themes that run through not just TNG but the other series. We see a little chemistry between Beverly and Jean Luc. Data is different from Spock. Spock had an inkling of earth customs/Data has no clue. It's possible that Tasha wanted Lutan but I don't see it. He's significantly older than her and I see the men all have fencing scars on their faces, probably a sign of honor where guys fight duels. Perhaps not a deal breaker. Bunny was asking what the balance between men and women on the planet was. It seems if the woman own the land and the men are CEOs, then why didn't she just fire Lutan before fighting Tasha instead of after? Another point: Tasha shouldn't have floored the attendant when he was pushing her out of the way, not threatening Picard. Also, set the Halo deck on easy so the government with the lifesaving medicine doesn't have a reason to call off the treaty. Another stab at the Prime Directive. We should just underline directive, not categorical imperative, since when does a primitive society have its own transporter? Also Picard informs us that the photon torpedoes will explode 1,000 meters over the planet's surface, but they clearly detonate in low orbit. Thanks bunny for the best reacts on patreon!

Yay! Book update! Pretty good list of Ellison favs. Mine would be a bit different but I’m fond of all of those. It’s certainly not uncommon to feel hot and cold about Ellisons writing, I had forgotten about that Shatner bit. Priceless! (Or should I say Priceline? Ugh, sorry) As for this episode, it’s kind of a mess in more ways than one. Some have called it the worst episode of trek ever. I don’t know if I’d go that far but it certainly has major problems. The acting is stilted. Some of the dialogue borders on childish. It’s not enough story stretched out over too much time. And the alien culture depicted is just kind of arbitrarily adversarial rather than seeming to have any real rhyme or reason. Now, in a certain kind of episode, a good story could be built around trying to navigate around incomprehensible customs. But the execution in this is fairly poor and scattershot. I don’t think it’s overtly racist it sexist, at least not in intent, but it sure is clumsy in those regards. I doo like some of the Geordi/Data stuff here. We see them starting to build a bond of friendship. The characterization of Tasha, Troi, and even Picard are, well, lest just say this is not their best showing. It’s perfectly fine to point out comparisons to TOS at this point as the creators themselves were still very much trying to ape the dynamics of the old show, and hadn’t yet “found their own voice”

Mark Gosine

I might be the red herring on this episode. I find it entertaining enough. A fun watch. And like Greg Polander I never saw the racism in this episode. I think you have to conjure up some weird and extremely contrived explanations to find it. As for the 'big eyes' of Troy. I never really noticed it, but a friend and co-worker of mine pointed out that Troi's race, Betazoid, have very large pupils/irises of all black. The actress, and others on the series playing Betaziods, were all wearing contact lens. To enlarge, covering both pupil and iris, making their eyes much larger than normal and solid black.

Carlos Stevens

Books eh??? Ever read Stephen R. Donaldson???????

Bret Kay

What's the rush?

Stainless Steel Cat

I think the similarity to Amok Time might have been intentional. It's not as blatant a call-back as with The Naked Now, but I remember the first season always felt to me like they were too tied to TOS in lots of little ways. For instance, last episode we met the chief engineer, who wasn't Scottish but had a Scots name - MacDougall. Luckily the show gains self-confidence and goes its own way.

Michael

No rush, but you have to admit 3 years is long plus if she watches DS9 , Voyager and Enterprise also I can’t wait until she gets to season 2 Season 1 had great episodes but really struggled at times, regardless I’m here for the long haul

Gregory Middleton

Just rejoining now with your TNG journey. This episode has its slightly clumsy moments, very extreme characters unfocused execution like a lot of season 1 and 2, but it also has the seeds of what develops into a truly amazing show. Not sure if you’ll ever do a live watch-along of TNG, but there are definitely episodes that are ‘movie’ strong. A real pleasure to share your experience with this!

bunnytails

From what I hear, much more awesome TNG is to come!

bunnytails

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I pretty much agree. And I noticed the warp 3 thing, too!

Summer

Very much so, great episodes in each season, rough spots, Star Trek is like a river, but so I don’t give spoilers I won’t say where the rocks are….

bunnytails

I don't really know what their life schedule or editor situation is like but it sounds like they have some more help/time than I do. That being said, Jim here is helping edit some episodes so on those weeks I should be able to do 2. With three "jobs" going at once I'm trying to be reasonable and not burn myself out.

bunnytails

Hmm. I feel a bit out of the loop. I thought it was fine but yeah lots of people seem to hate this one.

bunnytails

Ohh I didn't notice the contacts. That might be why her eyes stood out so much.

bunnytails

It'll be interesting to see how the show evolves!

bunnytails

Good to see you! We did do a live watchalong for Encounter at Farpoint but I didn't have any plans after that. Open to suggestions, but wait till we get closer. Otherwise I will forget :P

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

1) The stuff with Tasha's attraction to the Ligonian leader comes off a little weird. I think it's supposed to be empowering, admitting her attraction to him, but it gets interpreted a little like the writers felt the need to shoehorn it in there ie she can't just be a strong presence in her own right, there has to be a little bit of "tee hee I'm just a girl" because of the era of tv we're in. 2) Some of the stuff with Ligonians comes off a little racialized, the dress and accents, the portrayal of their culture, the "noble savages" who aren't very technologically advanced. None of it is awful or anything and it doesn't bother me overmuch but a lot of folk think its all a little cringe.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

And admittedly I'm kinda doing the thing that I often give others heck for, taking a C- of and episode and talking about it like it's an F because I'm comparing it to all the B+s and As that I know are coming down the pike. Which isn't very fair of me, to be clear, and I should try harder not to do.

Summer

Go ahead

Mark Gosine

Specifically, the Thomas Covenant series.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Without all of that I'd probably be in here calling it a perfectly ok workaday episode of Trek. Decent enough but nothing mindblowing. It's just that some of it lands a little weird, even after giving it the grace of the time period it was written in and that kinda drags it down a bit in my eyes.

Grey Invader

This is a strange one. Definitely hasn't stood the test of time. Even back in the late 80s it was a little...off. I like how it feels like a TOS episode though. I also like anything with Tasha Yar. Denise Crosby was a hottie back in the day. She really fills out that Starfleet uniform.

Timothy Bennett

Should watch the movie A Boy and His Dog, which is based on Harlan Ellison story.

Timothy Bennett

A *very* young Don Johnson (of Miami Vice fame) in I believe his movie lead debut

Phillip Jones

You survived watching the worst episode of ST:TNG (and, arguably, the worst episode of any Star Trek series). The first two seasons of ST:TNG were pretty rough. Nevertheless, the second season includes an episode, written by former lawyer Melinda Snodgrass, that is one of the best episodes of any Star Trek series. So, keep up your courage.

InfinitelyJesting

It's funny how these early episodes are still transitioning from the old show. This one feels like it could easily be from the 1st series.

bunnytails

I can't think of anything that would deter me, no need to fret :)
