This is a fun one. Still rooted in TOS, if we see the alien it could mean nothing

Next week…..

Yes, another episode firmly rooted from TOS. However, I agree with you Bunny -- it's a fun episode, and one of my favorites from Season one. As someone who majored in history I'm always critical about how things are portrayed in media, but this episode did a great job with 1941 San Fran. Nothing to complain about really. My only one nitpick is that when Picard first enters the holodeck you can clearly hear a typewriter in use, and yet when he enters the office his secretary is getting ready to leave, so it couldn't be her. It's interesting that Picard would have a interest in Dixon Hill and the whole private eye genre of fiction. It's come up before, but this is really the first time that it's been explored in depth. I guess I could see his interest in it due to how his mind worked. So regarding the Holodeck - it USUALLY has safeties on. That prevents anyone from getting seriously hurt or killed in there. However, the malfunction that happened with the Holodeck disabled those, hence the bullet actually being real. You can always turn the safeties off if you want to, but the normal operating procedure is that they are on default. And yes, it's amazing what they can do! Again, we've seen them already, but this is really the first episode where most of it takes place in a Holodeck. As Picard says, they can be used for training, R&R, and a myriad of other functions. The running joke with the fans is that of COURSE one of the biggest things they would be used for is sex, but I do believe that they would see plenty of other use. Also nice to see ships still have historians as part of the crew -- the infamous Lt. McGyver from Space Speed was one as well. To answer your thought about the time crunch -- agree that perhaps this wasn't the best time. However in Picard's defense they were not supposed to have the meeting and deliver the greeting for 13 hours. Troi had told him to take a break and get his mind off things for a bit. So I could see inviting some people to join him for a few hours there. The meeting got moved up when they were not expecting it though. Holodeck episodes tend to be among my favorites so I was very happy to see the strong start that they got. You recognized one of the guest actors, Bunny, and there were others. Redblock was played by seasoned actor Lawrence Tierney, best known for his many screen portrayals of mobsters and "tough guys" in a career that spanned over fifty years. Lt. Bell was played by William Boyett, best known for his roles in law enforcement dramas on television from the 1950s through the 1990s. Fans gave this one a mixed review, but I really enjoy it. Finally, I'll just end with what Wil Wheaton said: he called the episode a "fantastic collaborative effort, from Tracy Tormé's script, to Joseph Scanlan's direction, to Ed Brown's cinematography, to every actor's performance. There's a reason 'The Big Goodbye' is the only Star Trek episode to win a Peabody." He gave the episode an A grade.

Mr Leach is fashioned after the iconic actor of the silver screen Peter Lore. The whole Dixon Hill thing is loosley fashioned after the movie "The Maltese Falcon" staring Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade

So Bunnie...did you lose a bet? Oh well, at least you're ready for Halloween 🎃😜

You're right, up til now, we've mostly only seen environments or characters that did not speak. This episode represents an evolution in what is possible on the holodeck.

Fizzbin ! LOL, Cyberpunk 2077 should be called Fizzbin. That's what I would call it . The outfit is great. I saw the trailers for 2077 and I might buy it to play. I'm not a gamer , so it will be way worse than you, 😂. LOL, New Trek, LOL. too funny. You would do great at a cosplay as the lady cat from TOS. Assignment Earth. I still remember your gasp. 😊

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I have mixed feelings about this one. As someone who enjoys heavy amounts of camp and silliness I want to like it. Noir dramas by definition are filled with camp, overwrought dialogue etc But this one is a little much even for me. Maybe because there's no real villain or the threat seems underwhelming, I'm not sure. The last scene with the "And Mr. LaForge, schtep on it☝️🎩" is pretty satisfying though 😆

"Lost a bet? At least you're ready for Halloween..." You PLANNED to upload this today didn't you! Any other time of year, wouldn't Trek-only viewers assume you're just cosplaying an alien race from Planet Bunny? :)

Lord Have Mercy Child... if you have to pee.... go pee! Ain't no one here going to begrudge you the chance to empty your bladder. Besides... holding it in too long can increase the chance of bladder infections. (it gets worse when you get older)

Writers: Let's do an episode teasing bug aliens never shown, but just do a completely different plot about 1940s dicks instead! Award-winning Season 1 at it's finest~ My favorite line? "Teenage mating rituals!" Yes, yes Data! That's exactly what automobiles are for! Exactly...

TNG was a relatively expensive show to make in its time. Bug people would have been expensive to make. 🐛 But really, that was a sub plot. It was written to learn more about Picard. Good catch on the lipstick. It most certainly should not have stayed on after he left the holodeck. 💄

뱀파이안젤

Picard was just not letting his downtime go to waste before his big day at work started by playing some RPG app on his holo device! He wasn't gonna just wait for the important meeting to start while twiddling his thumbs for hours doing nothing else but brush up on a bug language 🤣

뱀파이안젤

Thank you for your service so that we may have react uploads in cosplay 🫡 Don't worry bout a cos if you really gotta go next time tho~ It's ok to put yourself first 😇

This is a great episode. I agree with you that it’s a bit weird that they were fooling around on the holodeck with an important diplomatic summit coming up but the episode is so fun I don’t much care. It’s even more fun if one is familiar with some of the tropes of pulp fiction and film noir. A reviewer once said something like “the holodeck is like having the galaxy’s best gaming console, only every once in a while it tries to eat your cat” . That’s a pretty apt metaphor. In addition to what a cool concept it is, it’s kind of genius from a storytelling standpoint. It basically gives the writers free rein to put our heroes into any setting imaginable. I suppose it might be a spoiler to say there w8ll be many future crazy episodes using the holodeck, but I mean c’mon, you don’t include a cool element like that in your fictional world and NOT come back to it. 😁 They are still working out a few of the details of just how it all works but this episode does a darn good job of setting up the premise. It’s appropriate that you were in cosplay for this one Bunny as the holodeck is, in universe, basically the ultimate cosplay playground for Starfleet personnel.

My first reaction from you since I joined patreon! Great job! A silly fun episode.

Mark Gosine

I've always liked this one. The film Noir is just so fun. Oh, Holograms just want to have fun, fun.

bunnytails

I didn't really catch on to the meeting being moved up or maybe I just forgot. Good thing to point out and it makes more sense now!

bunnytails

It makes me excited for future episodes focusing on the holodeck!

bunnytails

I would recommend Cyberpunk 2077! Not only does it have a beautiful and rich world and story, but it has Keanu Reeves! You can play on the easy difficulty :)

bunnytails

Totally NOT planned but funny how that worked out lol

bunnytails

lol at the "teenage mating rituals" line

bunnytails

Haha no. I think I will wait until VR headsets get more comfortable. Or maybe they already are. I haven't tried it in a long time, though my husband really enjoys it.

timothy w moyer

Thanks Bunny. I'll work on getting that or something set up. This and No Mans Sky look nice to try. I like watching the gaming channels now, Yous included, Ha Ha.
