Star Trek: The Next Generation 1x14 "Angel One" - Full Watch-along

It's always a balance between the Prime Directive and negotiations because of the importance and location of of said planet to the Federation. Flexibility on issues and customs will happen. It's NEVER just a Handbook for procedure . 😁... Oh Yeah, she was darn tootin purrty 😍.

Riker and his diplomatic relation priorities... :)

This episode makes little sense. At the time Roddenberry was going through things with personal issues that is one reason for the oddness of some stories. Next episode is neat. Keep watching it will improve…..one day. Say what you think that is why we are here

Yes I think bunny gets the gist of Angels One; plot holes big enough to drive a truck through. Design flaws in the ship's computer causing the crew to become casualties. A Taste of Armageddon vintage planet, with Riker doing a Kirk searching for the solution, even though the planet has no connection to the virus or the Romulan plot. My take is they managed to plant the seed, pun intended, for a new constitution, and Beata isn't really going to send dissidents to the gulag. Surprisingly they find a man's attire big enough to fit the hulking Riker, considering the other men on the planet. I give Angel One a 10 out of 10 for Patricia McPherson as Ariel.

Angel One's planetwide library don't need no man to comprehend it 😹

We have not reached my favorite episode of the series or the season.

Ron

I was distracted by Ariel (Ramsey's wife, played by Patricia McPherson) because she looked so familiar to me. It turns out she played Bonnie for all 4 seasons of the 80's Knight Rider show where her character was the Tech Expert-archetype on the show. Teri Garr: As you later noticed, that wasn't Teri. But, if you want to see her at her best, I highly recommend Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1978) and Tootsie (1983). She won a Saturn for Best Supporting Actress on CE3K and was nominated for a BAFTA Best Supporting Actress on Tootsie. After my Brazil movie nom reaches the top of the list, I think CE3K might be my next push.

It seems to me the Prime Directive would demand the removal of the survivors. What of the rights of the people of Angel One? To maintain good relations, Ramsey and his group would be removed whether they wanted to or not.

Great watchalong as always. That shirt is super cute on you!

Interesting. Wonder what those might be. I know my series fav. Don't know if I have a season 1 fav....let me have look. Ah, I'd guess it'd have to be 'The Big Goodbye'. for season 1 for me. Season 1 is a toughie. I'd bet season 1 would be wildly different from person to person.

Mark Gosine

Bunny, I would image the first crew member of the Odin seemed to be familiar because he always reminds me of MacGiver. Of course that was one of the 'eighties' looks. Mediocre episode but still entertaining enough.....

Geordi is 4th in Command? I always thought he was just in charge of making the ship fly through space, not part of command? It makes sense to let an officer who knows the ship's capabilities command the ship then, even if he doesn't have the experience ordering the crew around like Picard or Riker does.

Not a big fan of this one. It commits the only true crime in Star Trek: in my opinion it’s just kinda boring. The lesson, “sexism bad”, is a good one. But ithe subject isn’t tackled with any with any real flair or interest. And the idea that there was already unrest among Angel One’s male population before the shipwreck isn’t even hinted at until 3/4ths of the way in and then just sprung. We got Trent looking a little bit jealous of Riker but that’s all we get, which doesn’t carry any emotional weight at all. I guess what I’m saying is Trent was no Alexander the Platonian. The virus B plot wasn’t well executed either. It’s another contrived ticking clock virus angle that they kinda overused in TOS. (i.e. Miri,, Methuselah, etc.) “Is this how they conduct diplomacy in the future” … no, that’s just Riker. Speaking of Riker, Bunny, you were absolutely right that his determination to transport the people off the planet if they were refusing was absolutely inappropriate. They are trying way too hard to make him “Kirk-lite” at this point. Mistress Beata was striking but like Ron my eyes were immediately locked onto Bonnie, er…. Ariel. Guess you had to be an 80s kid. So yeah. Not a terrible episode, but definitely lower middling to me. Some people really hated it at the time but to me there really isn’t even enough to sink my teeth into to even deeply dislike it. Off topic: They announced there will be a season two of Alien:Earth this week. So that’s cool

Bunny, I agree, not the best episodes. I would submit that this is one of the episodes that gives the first 2 seasons of TNG a bad reputation.

Desmond

I really liked the subplot of tensions in the Neutral Zone. Reminds us that we are in a bigger universe than whatever is happening on the Enterprise.

Desmond

You are 100% right with your commentary on the Prime Directive and how Riker is violating it, btw.

Summer

At the end of the season I will tell you the eight I think are best and three or four I think everyone should see at least three times

Greg

I had a crush on Patricia as a kid watching re-runs of Knight Rider after school. :) It was a nice bonus to see her here, abit in a supporting role.

I'm late to watch this as I just returned from Australia, and I'm jet lagged so not thinking 100 percent, but I see many people already posted what I would have said so that really helps. :) I've always liked this episode. I'm not sure if there's a term for this, but I would describe it as 'I know this has issues/problems/etc. but despite all of the flaws I still enjoy it, it's a guilty pleasure' and this episode is totally that for me. (To give an example for it in terms of movies, I feel the same way about Sucker Punch and Passengers, if you've seen either movie.) I agree that a second watch would probably help in understanding this episode better, but I agree that you got the core issues. I have NEVER found this episode sexiest, even after first watch (and for what it's worth, Will Wheaton agrees with me about that). The episode was intended to be commentary about Apartheid that was in charge of South Africa at the time (1987) -- Star Trek has never been afraid to tread on controversial topics. However, Patrick Stewart felt the episode WAS sexiest and fought to have parts changed, and there was problems with the director also, all of which came together to produce an episode with a good idea but not executed in the best way. Agree that Karen Montgomery was very striking! I had eyes for Ariel though, who was played by Patricia McPherson. She was a regular on a 80's TV show I watched a lot as a kid after school in reruns, Knight Rider. (KITT as the talking car was the star of the show, but they had hot girls on there also!). You might recognize Ramsey also -- he was played by Sam Hennings who has stared in a bunch of movies including Supernatrual. Karen Montgomery was never a huge name, mostly just doing work in guests spots on TV shows, but she had a successful and long career. Sadly she passed away from breast cancer in 2015. Riker's whole argument was that even though they could not FORCE the Odin's people to come with them, he was prepared to break rules and get court martialed to save them as he didn't believe they should be executed. His speech about making them maryters and you can't kill a maryer was a really good one. And yes, Riker did totally sleep with her, but to be fair, can you blame him? LOL

Timothy Bennett

Totally inconsistent episode and random forced issues to create plot drama. One of the reasons why S1 is hit or miss

bunnytails

No, I guess I can't blame Riker haha

bunnytails

I am hyped for Alien: Earth season 2!!

bunnytails

Yeah, it wasn't ALL bad. It did have Karen Montgomery :D

bunnytails

I would LOVE to see Close Encounters!

bunnytails

Something to look forward to, then!
