Summer

You have the title for the next episode in the title

Summer

This is a pretty good season 1 episode

Summer

You singing or humming the theme is great go on

Summer

I believe Frakes does play a trombone. I am interested in woodwinds but would love to learn violin or viola

Soma

Summer

I looked on spoilery areas, yes he has played since high school or so

Greg

Your thoughts on this episode were VERY close to mine, Bunny. This may be the closet the two of us have been in sync to what we thought about a episode. :) This is not my favorite episode of season one, but it's very close. First of all, according to the Wikipedia article on this episode, The name "11001001" is, as you know, a binary number -- and it's a concatenation of the names of the Bynars (One One, Zero Zero, One Zero, and Zero One). So it's a tongue in cheek way of giving their names and saying right out in front of how important the Bynars are going to be, although nobody would know that on a first watch. While the episode has the usual plot holes, it's fast paced and entertaining enough that you really don't mind. Having Minuet on the Holodeck as the 'B story' really tied into the main story later on in a way that you didn't expect, and again your learning more about the characters here (Yes, Riker knows how to play the trombone). As for instruments, it's a toss up either between a piano or a guitar -- both played well are just amazing in a song. Runner up goes to the Sax, a sexy instrument that can really deliver the soul to a musical piece. More good guest stars for this one. I didn't know her when this aired, but in the years after this episode, Carolyn McCormick (who played Minuet) would become a regular on one of my favorite TV shows, Law and Order and some of it's spinoff's, where she was amazing. She was older then, so I didn't make the connection this was the same woman who played that sultry Holodeck character. Still amazing looks, though. Commander Quinteros (the commander of Starbase 74) was also played by an experienced actor, Eugene Dynarski. He's best known for his work in the movies Duel and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and he also played Stalin in the game Command and Conquer: Red Alert. BTW Eugene Dynarski had also been in Star Trek before -- he played Ben Childress in Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Mudd's Women" and Krodak in "The Mark of Gideon" The episode doesn't really do a great job of explaining this, but Minuet felt so 'real' due to the programming that the Bynars were doing to the ship's computer. They were using some of their own tech to make it even 'better' then what the Holodeck could do, so once that was gone, the Holodeck returned to it's 'normal' level of characters. Riker fell in love with someone who was THIS close to being human, far above what even the Holodeck could do. Shoutout for Melbourne, the Australian city I just returned from, as being one of the starships mentioned here. :) Nice to see a episode where a self destruct is turned off with plenty of time to spare, LOL Also very nice use of the main theme music during this episode (the song that you love so much). And on that same note, the shots of the Enterprise approaching the Starbase orbiting a planet came from Star Trek 3, edited to swap one Enterprise for another. This MIGHT be the first time that we SEE that the Enterprise is a Galaxy Class ship. We've HEARD Picard say it, but it can be easy to miss that. Finally, the Bynars were indeed played by women, as you guessed during the episode.

Y'know as a kid watching TNG, I never noticed that about Worf... THANKS for making me notice it now as a grown ass man Bunny! LOL XD

William Terry

This is a great episode and watching it again with bunny is, as they say, priceless! If they wanted Data to man the bridge they could have ordered him, not go on rec and leave a passenger, not an ensign, to keep an eye on the Binars. As for tech, it sounded plausible, except for the storage: if it all fit on their belts, what was the problem? Great lines: "You might have said 'no'" is a favorite. I think Minuet was a Binar, and left when her assignment was completed. Riker treats Deanna like their relationship is on the back burner, and unfortunately instead of making a starship commander more liberated the writers make Riker come off worse than Kirk.

Max

Riker loves his favorite line: "Docking complete!" ;)

These episodes are better than I remember from watching the series the second time. The first time I watched we were in a Star Trek desert so of course they were good.

Carlos Stevens

It is true... that was actually him playing the trombone.

Super Sunny Sunblade

Why can't someone please invent a holodeck irl to materialize the perfect companions who don't exis-! 😻

Carlos Stevens

It's ok Bunny... You can hum/sing along with the theme song. In fact, you should sing/hum it at a Karaoke bar at your first opportunity.

Mark Gosine

Not a bad episode. Now, as king of the nerds, engineer and programmer who has built a calculator back in the day (around the time of this episode premier) from 8087 chips on a bread board: Binary conversion table: 1100 1001 → decimal 201 → extended ASCII character É. Your '?' answer was a response from the query engine that it didn't know what you were asking. On an aside, I appreciate Minuet a lot more. Worf's package even less now a days. Gotta be a sock. Sorry, Dorn. I always thought Minuet's name would be the password. Silly me. I don't think they ever announced the other two Binar's names, much less to the captain.

Carlos Stevens

heh heh... since you ask... My favorite instrument is the acoustic guitar... for the record, I play flamenco. Sadly, I'm am out of practice.

Carlos Stevens

Wait... WHAT??? Did you say "Worf's package"???? (things men don't notice)

Desmond

Always liked this one. Some exciting action with the evacuation of the Enterprise. And some good looks at all the characters at work. Seeing how they think, how they handle a serious situation. And the Binars are such a unique and interesting race. Picard awkardly being a third wheel in Riker's sex fantasy is the only obvious weakness, IMO.

Carlos Stevens

11001001 =... 201 in decimal -55 in as an 8-bit integer C9 in Hexadecimal "É" as an extended ASCII character However, after a little bit of research, I think Grok found the answer to the riddle of the name... "Production Easter Egg: The opcode for "RET" (unconditional return) on the Intel 8080/Z80 CPU is 0xC9 (hex for 11001001). Scriptwriter Maurice Hurley (a tech guy) likely slipped that in as a wink to hackers and assembly nerds—it's like the code "returns" the ship to normalcy. X posts still reference this in UFO patches (e.g., Area 51 lore where 11001001 shows up, speculating it's a "return to base" signal or something conspiratorial)." Maurice Hurley was indeed a writer for this script. I think Grok nailed it.

Finally Season1 episode when "Parrises Squares" HAS ENTERED THE CHAT!

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

Ah, the episode that spawned a thousand jokes about the worst job on the Enterprise: whoever has to mop the holodeck…. afterwards. 😝 This is a good solid episode. Nothing world shattering. Just a nice little sci-fi story in the classic mode. A little heavy on the technobabble but entertatning enough. Generally in binary you need 8 1s or 0s to make a single alphanumeric character. So the title isn’t nearly long enough to make a word in standard ASCII. And I don’t think 11001001 maps to anything either. It’s been literally decades since I had to do anything in binary (it’s not my current profession but I did spend some time as a network administrator. I’ve had a weird life). I always just assumed the title was just a general indicator of the Binars nature rather than anything specific. But I yield to anyone with greater expertise or inside info. I too, though Picard was surprisingly chill about the whole thing at the end but … *shrug* Edit: and sure enough, as I was typing others posted a better explanation ! 😁

Stainless Steel Cat

I would never be taken in by Minuet... I *only* like Dixieland Jazz. ;o)

Mark Gosine

I dunno. If the captain, or anyone else, can just walk in on your holodeck session at anytime, it would put the kabosh on anything that would require a mop. Just saying.

bunnytails

She is missing from quite a few episodes

bunnytails

I didn't think about Minuet being a Binar. That could be the case!

Edward M. Crowe

Yes, I got a similar reply with Gemini Pro 3.0, which would also make sense as a key to the plot: "In Z80 & Intel 8080 Processors: It is the opcode for RET (Return). It tells the processor to finish a subroutine and go back to where it was before." Also, a comment I haven't seen yet below, I presume the names given to the original two ("this is 1-0, and this is 0-1", at movie time 0:2:30 -- 0:2:35) must be nicknames, as of course with only two digits you can only count up to two persons (1-0 and 0-1). So what are everyone else's names on the planet? Or, even if we consider that the "name" is actually for the PAIR, (so the actual "name" is not "1-0" but actually "1001" for the original two together), so we have 4 digits to work with, that would still only allow for 16 possible combinations, unless using numbers other than 1 or 0 (i.e. 2 to 9, for a possible 9,999 combinations), which is fine, except that it is no longer a BINARY number set?

Edward M. Crowe

I've always been a big Tina S fan. I wonder if Bunny knows who she is?

Summer

By now you have probably seen some good ones.

Bret Kay

I always enjoy this episode. It's a lot of cool world building. We get the Bynars, Minuet, Auto-Destruct, Data painting. We learn a little about games they play in their free time (Parisi squares). This one reminds me of Star Trek III with the same starbase docking, the Enterprise being stolen, and the Auto-Destruct. 11001001 doesn't have any special meaning. It's just all the possible 2-bit combinations (00, 01, 10, 11) strung together in an interesting way. It's also the name of the file Riker and Picard had to find (briefly shown on screen). Sometimes it's said to be the names of the Bynars in the show, but the only ones named are 01 and 10. I imagine they have a lot of people with duplicate names if they only have 4 names lol

bunnytails

There are a few coming up I've really enjoyed! The last one I watched was episode 23.

bunnytails

Yeah this is one of the stronger season 1 eps so far, I think!

John Schwarze

Not sure if it’s been mentioned, but you may recognize the actor who played Commander Quinteros as the same actor who played the miner “Childress” in the beloved first season episode of TOS, “Mudd’s Women”.
