One of the best of season keep watching

Greg

I have to agree with you Bunny -- this is a really good episode, one of the best ones for Season 1. There's numerous reasons why this comes together as well as it does -- the A and B plot, that is, the investigation of the Enterprise and her crew and Wesley taking the entrance exam for Starfleet Academy, works well together in a wonderful way. It's a slower based episode without being TOO slow, and your always entertained by someone going on. Everyone got screen time, from regular characters to guest spots, and you learn a lot more about the characters. Not a LOT is said about Starfleet Academy during the show's run -- perhaps the new show starting up focusing ON the Academy will expand it quite a lot! But the idea that I had was that admission works somewhat similar to how cadets get into West Point. Each district -- in terms of Star Trek, planet -- is allowed to nominate someone, and one person can be selected from that planet to attend the Academy for that year. With hundreds of worlds in the Federation, this seems the fairest way to make sure everyone gets a fair shot. Less populated planets are allowed to have people come in from outside, which is why you had two humans, a Vulcan, and a Benzite applying to go under that planet's name. It is indeed VERY hard to get into the Academy, and like college, not everyone graduates. Like with our Marines, they take the best of the best and make an elite group of officers. (Perhaps TOO elite...that's an issue that gets explored in later episodes) Among the guest actors, Robert Schenkkan stands out as Lt. Commander Remmick. He's an actor, playwrite, and screenwriter who has won or been nominated for several major prizes for his work. John Putch played Murdock, best known for being a regular on the TV show One Day At A Time. Robert Ito played Lt. Chang, best known for being a regular on Quincy MD and Falcon Crest, and also has done animation voices. Admiral Quinn was played by Ward Costello. who also was a composer and lyricist. There's two other guest roles that have connection to video game that you may find interesting, Bunny: 1) Rondon, the big strong alien guy who picked a fight with Wesley in the corridor as one of his test, was played by Daniel Riordan, who voiced Alduin in Skyrim. 2) The Vulcan woman, T'Shanik, was played by Tasia Valenza. She is most known for being the voice of Poison Ivy in the Arkham series from 2009 to 2015 as well as in a number of other video games, such as Sniper Wolf in Metal Gear Solid and her various roles in the Star Wars Universe. This episode got a mixed response from fans, but on hindsight watching this again it's even better then what I recall when it first aired and is another good foundational episode for what was to come in numerous ways. Finally, yes, the length of TNG -- like MANY American TV shows of the time -- was around 23-26 episodes. That was very common for a long time. It's only recently with the rise of streaming and the shows THOSE networks produce that the average length for a 'season' -- if we can even call it that anymore -- has shrunk to 8-16 episodes depending on who is making it. Is this better? Well, there's pros and cons to it and you can argue a case either way. I do miss the longer seasons though.

I love this one for the references to prior episodes (continuity, as you said) and the twist with what Remmick was actually doing. The transitions during the bridge officer interviews were really cool too. They reminded me of the episode of Firefly where the same sort of transitions happen when the crew is being interrogated by that Alliance dude from Desperate Housewives...think it was the 3rd episode. Oh, and Wesley. Wesley...was also there lol

Super Sunny Sunblade

ah, Starfleet "we only accept ONE a year" Akademy...Where even the lowest ship janitor crew members must be Wesley iq level 😹

Super Sunny Sunblade

imagining a whole ship where EVERY crew member IS Wesley doesn't sound half bad now...Could at least give an "other" famous ship shape a run for its money even if the Crusherprise still might not be as "balanced" a team as the Enterprise under Picard's experienced command hehe 😻

Carlos Stevens

So many questions... so many answers... so many spoilers... I'll just clamp my mouth shut.

Carlos Stevens

Yeah, but one "SHUT UP WESTLEY" will cripple the entire ship.

I hope Bev reported Remmick after that unprofessional behavior

This episode was a highlight of season 1 for sure. No spoilers: > Relva 7 is just an outpost. It is not Starfleet Academy. It was just 1 of those 4 applicants, not just 1 total admitted into the academy. Think of Starfleet Academy as a very very large university. Starfleet is a massive organization that needs new people to fill spots continuously. e.g. Ships, bases, etc. > Plot hole: Jake was not out of transporter range. Wesley is beaming up and down from the planet they're orbiting. But transporting Jake from a shuttle much nearer than the planet would not have fit the plot need.

Loved this episode as a kid when "finally cuties my age" featured in Starfleet (academy) But nowadays in 2025..... Well, who knows what those actors look like nowadays is what I meant to say. Besides the famous one! :)

William Terry

Wesley fails in this one. Not giving anyone heads up on his irrational friend Jake for starters. I can see being surprised at the test method of bluffing Wesley with a fake situation involving a bully. It should have made him less believing when the false alarm happens later. The testers should have failed him when he helped the other guy. Also I'm sure the testers love it when the candidates tell them they made the wrong choice. A Gary Stu wouldn't need to go to Starfleet Academy anyway. He could just stow away on a starship and five minutes later be named captain, like Kirk in the J.J. Abrams movie.

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

Fun fact: the person portraying Mordok grew up to be Taylor Swift. The makeup crew were just THAT GOOD! 😝

Mark Gosine

I always thought it was pretty crappy that they had to compete within this group rather than all applicants everywhere. What's up wid dat.?

Mark Gosine

All. Just try and remember that saying you aren't going to mention any spoilers is a spoiler. Bunny, just to reassure you that this episode in no way has any connection to any other future episode in Start Trek ever ;) !

reply

Theres only 2 kinds of people: Those who see Wesley as obnoxious. Those who see Wesley as cute. Which is she?

Mark Gosine

How dare you dare my, "How dare you!"

bunnytails

Oh yeah, it IS a lot like that Firefly episode!
