Star Trek: The Next Generation 1x20 "Heart of Glory" - Full Watch-along

Desmond

I've always liked this one, because yeah, at this point in the show, you really don't know that much about Worf. So him joining the Klingon pirates (or whatever they're supposed to be) is a plausible threat.

Greg

I also really like this episode, one of my favs from Season 1, and the first TNG episode to focus on the Klingons. As you said, Bunny, we didn't know much about Worf at this point so I'm glad he got an episode heavily focused on him and the other Klingons. A few observations -- yes, I understand and share the confusion as to 'which' Neutral Zone as they didn't always say if it was the Klingon or Romulan one. Based on the fact they fought a battle with a Klingon Bird of Pray, I'm going to assume it was the Klingon one. I do find it a bit sus though that the Enterprise would not detect the wreckage of the destroyed Klingon ship in the area though. Ah, the major plot problems that each episode has, LOL It was cool seeing the combined Federation and Klingon seals behind the Klingon Commander, proof that the alliance was indeed a thing and relations were at least much better if not perfect then before. Interesting comparison between Worf and Spock, that's not one I've thought off before. And it does fit for the most part, except that other Vulcans served in Starfleet during Spock's time. Worf is the first Klingon on Starfleet. The experimental broadcast of what LeForge sees was also a nice touch, it also added some character development for him as well as now Picard and Riker could see things through 'his eyes' and how he experienced things. Among the guest actors here, the most well known to Star Trek fans is Vaughn Armstrong who played the lead Klingon renegade. He would go on to play characters in three more Star Trek shows. Despite this episode getting mixed results, Michael Dorn was always very happy with this one. D. C. Fontana also helped to write the script. Nice use of Klingon music in this episode as well.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Aside from really enjoying the very romantic way that the Klingons talk, Worf/MD has some great dramatic dialogue/mini speeches in this one. The end is very heartwarming. And you nailed it, B, that second death scream had something extra on it. Straight up bone chilling. I always try to be careful in framing my comments through the lense of my own personal favourites so I don't expect anyone to co-sign the following statement, so here goes: For me, personally, top 3 for S1, no question. I'm not gonna put it on any Top Episodes of the entire series lists but just really, really, solid. It's these and a few others that put me firmly in the camp of NOT passing over S1 and S2. Just really good stuff. I enjoyed the heck out of this, B, see you in the next one👍🖖

Desmond

And you're absolutely right, Worf's backstory does mirror Spock's in many ways.

Carlos Stevens

From my understanding, there was never a Klingon Neutral Zone in the original series, but there was the Organian Treaty. The Romulan Neutral Zone was an agreement from the Romulan wars which occurred before TOS; both sides agreed to stay out of the zone, and any encroachment by either party was grounds to start the war again.

Carlos Stevens

Truly one of the best of the early TNG episodes.

Desmond

It was the Romulan Neutral Zone. It's stated in dialog that, due to the battle, they accidentally drifted into the Neutral Zone. The Romulans do not show up, however. The Federation and Klingons are at peace now, so there isn't a Klingon Neutral Zone anymore.

Decent episode some plot holes but good next episode is one of my faves of season one

Jim Jones

Good eye identifying it as a freighter! TOS didn't know they were creating a juggernaut series that would persist decades. So you'll see TNG and other series tighten up the rules as far as neutral zones, warp speeds, alien traits, etc. TOS will stop being the comparison for source of truth as you progress through TNG and other series which handle things better. Learning more about these characters is fun. Not to mention diving more into other species and their cultures and customs!

Greg

If they did say that, I missed it! Good catch, thanks.

bunnytails

Okay, good to know! People always told me they were still figuring certain things out in TOS and it looks like TNG will be much the same in that regard.

bunnytails

Ohh Arsenal of Freedom? I won't spoil what I thought about that one. :D

bunnytails

No Klingon one, really? Hmmm. I guess I made it up lol

bunnytails

Yeah, I dunno if this will be in my top 3 but I think it has a decent shot! And if not, maybe top 5!

bunnytails

Yeah! Glad I'm not crazy to think that.

Arsenal of Freedom feels nolstagic, for one it was the first TNG episode along with blank I saw since childhood in my mid twenties, but in the years since in rewatches it just was one of the 5 best of season 1

William Terry

Not a great start, with all the steam clouds and steel girders on the freighter. It's like the series is hoping for a cliffhanger when the ship blows up with the bridge officers in the transporter beam. Didn't know Yar was their Scotty with the transporter but I suppose they had to find something for her to do. Fortunately the story of Worf is better-the smile on his face watching the pirates wolf down Klingon food is well done. Season one is doing a good job making me appreciate the characters. Thanks bunny for a solid reacts!

They are still working out the kinks and details, they always will be, beauty of the creative process
