A Christmas Carol (1999) - Full Watch-along!

Summer

Dickens wrote it in 1843, but like many fans gave it a life of its own. The muppets is the best but this is what Dickens would have done. You probably would like the novella. If next year you want a list of Christmas movies let us know first time watches for popular Christmas movies are highly sought. Now for my cynical comment of the week: to truly change Scrooge will have to give up the laudenum. I do think its best to watch this version best to get the Fran and Belle deeper info then watch the Muppets which is more fun

Jim Jones

Whenever I see Sir Stew in a movie I just assume it's Capt Picard on the holodeck. 😂 Scrooge is reminiscent of TNG season 1 cranky Picard. 🤣 His background is definitely in theater. This type of old English role is his bread and butter. This man can ACT.

I posted a comment earlier, but here it is again: "The Man Who Invented Christmas" tells the tale of Dickens writing this work, what he had to do to get it printed, and how it impacted London society then and still reverberates today. Rent it for $4 on Amazon - well worth the dollars and time!

Just finished watching. Great job! Scrooge (and Marley) were rutheless loan brokers. As a banker, if you foreclose after missed payments you gain the property and can sell it, thus adding to your wealth. And you judge success of your business based on your ledger. Your assets, your wealth. Scrooge spent nothing to maintain that wealth even if it meant not buying coal for warmth. Fred (and Fezziwig) spent freely to bring joy. So by his standards, Scrooge eating thin broth with a potato in it, under a single burning candle beside a dying fire - with massive unspent cash - was rich. Fred, living a comfortable life - maybe just getting by living paycheck to paycheck - was poor. This was a mostly faithful rendition of the story. The Muppet version is excellent, with a dead serious Scrooge surrounded by Muppet madness and musical numbers. It's a lot of fun - also remarkably true to the original story. Now keep the same theme but change EVERYTHING and you get "Scrooged" where the main character (Bill Murray) is a heartless TV executive, visitsof the three spirits foretold by his former boss. It would be a good version to go to next - totally different story and characters set in present day NYC that follows the same story elements. That is as far away from the Dickens original as you can get. Everything else falls somewhere in-between. Again, nice job on this one. Merry Christmas and Happy NewYear!!!!

Picard on the holodeck! It's going to be hard for me not to think that way now, too!

My second favorite version!!
