Star Trek: The Next Generation 1x25 "Conspiracy" - Full Watch-along

Summer

So excited for you to start season 2

Bret Kay

No one's ready for that ending - the look on your face was priceless :) Glad you enjoyed it!

William Terry

For a shocking ending I think it's more Mantrap with the salt vampire- fucking kill it!-while they were hoping to save the pipe cleaner aliens for study. Also Worf uses the same double fisted punch on Quinn that Spock used with Nancy.

OMG. THAT was a Bunny Jump Scare face if I ever saw one. I was not ready when I first saw that either. LOL. "Hot Damn". 😂. This is a really good one to watch. You picked up on the conspiracy early, Bunny. Ha Ha. Catspaw 2.0 ? Yeah, that sounds good , I never thought of that. Yes, unexpected , to be sure. Well, Remmik will be no Tribble at all now, eh? 😁

Whoa what was this episode rated airing on tv back then with that gruesome destroyed body ending!

Greg

I was waiting for Bunny to get to this episode, and I'm glad she enjoyed it as much as she did! For me, this is my favorite episode of Season one. It was a nice continue of a plot line set up in a past episode, with both new and familiar faces, and it paid off very well. Star Trek does not do horror very often, so when they do, it REALLY lands. This episode keeps you guessing and tense the whole way through, where you don't know what's going on, who is involved, with all the surprises and plot twists, and what not. TV in the 60's did horror-like stuff, such as Twilight Zone, but didn't do full on horror -- as you guessed, that was for movies. Now we can see this stuff on a regular basis via streaming services. There was real concern when the episode was made about the ending being too violent and gory, so the visual effects producer showed his 6 year old son the episode. He loved it, so the decision was made to go ahead. However the episode did either come with a warning message or was censored in some other countries outside the US. My guess is that the woman captain was not compromised at the meeting, but got compromised later on. The other Captain, the alien, is a new race called the Bolians, named in honor of the Director. We also hear mention for the first time of the Ambassador class, although we don't actually see one yet. Usual plot holes aside, this is a episode that I think really holds up well, even on repeat watches when you know what's going on, and is memorable just for those ending scenes if nothing else.

"This meeting never happened. Also, tell Beverly I said hello" ...😏

Desmond

Yeah, that level of gore was surprising. Also, Picard and Riker both deciding simultaneously "fuck this, we gotta kill this thing", lol.

Desmond

Season 2 already feels more like what the show would become later on. Still some rough patches but really good, memorable stuff too.

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

"Are persistent gillbug infections ruining your beach plans? Ask your doctor if Dytallix B is right for you. Warning: side effects may include hyperactive adrenal glands, increased live worm s scravings and occasional exploding head" Excellent episode! TNG's first foray into horror tinged elements and it's very effective, IMO. There are some cool camera and lighting effects and I really like the score in this one. And of course, Bunny, I've been eagerly anticipating your reaction to the exploding Remmick scene for a while now. I was not disappointed. :) The effect was pretty graphic for TV at the time and as I understand it, even the producers were a bit hesitant about airing it. I sure as hell got my attentino and is one of the more memorable moment from the whole series.

Super Sunny Sunblade

At least The Doctor is high iq enough to use energy weapons against the superhuman rather than try hand-to-hand combat hehe...😹

Thegonagle

One of TV’s great redemption reversals. Nobody on the Enterprise will miss Remmik.

Carlos Stevens

Of all the Star Trek episodes, I think Voyager did the Horror episodes the best.

Carlos Stevens

Oh, this was nothing compared to The Outer Limits. (Both the original and the remake).

Summer

The fact that Dr. Crusher casually carries a phaser to a medical emergency is just the best. I would expect her aim to be true.

Stainless Steel Cat

A great and very memorable episode. Apart from the obvious great parts, I love that even the Enterprise computer effectively tells Data to shut up.

It was a dark and icy night. The sleet was pelting on the window like the tapping of a conspiracy on the fringes of my mind. Little did I know that my weekly viewing would shock my senses with a display of gruesome horror unknown to late 80’s broadcast television. I was thrilled, yet disturbed, that the intellectual show of my youth decided to move in this explicit gothic direction. Not altogether, as I enjoyed the episode overall. I showed this episode to my friend, not a Trek follower, who was into the slasher/horror genre. He was impressed. So saying, I will wax eloquently on this episode as I have mixed feelings. I’m not sure why it was made. I do believe Roddenberry was still involved at this point in the series. So, I’ m not quite sure how this one made it through his tight control at that point. It is so divergent than most of his Star Trek to this point. I don’t know if he was throwing a bone to Paramount or not due to ratings or whatever. And I’m glad that this horror aspect was muted afterwards. I hope this is not a spoiler, but I think the horror part, and shock shlock, was not what Roddenberry was wanting for his baby. The episode was great for the intrigue and conspiratorial aspect, and I can appreciate it for that. Whew, at the risk of this becoming a lengthy commentary, ala Greg Polander, I’ll cut it short. I’ll have much more to say after the last episode of this season, with of course my favorite.

Mark Gosine

Not my favorite, but I can see why some might hold it in such esteem.

Haha, glad I didn't disappoint! It's pretty tame by today's standards, but when you come from TOS and then see this.. it's super shocking!
