I really would not like to know anything about Crusher for future episodes or seasons, whether she ever makes a return or not in any capacity.

Answers cannot be given for some time to avoid any spoilers. Glad you were excited to see Diana’s name. Your face changing when you realized Crusher was missing was great. Not sure if we saw ten forward in First Contact, but ten forward is one of the most memorable parts of the ship. And you reasoning what the light did was, exact. I liked this when I was small, now that I am older I am mid on the episode they wanted Pulaski to be like a female McCoy. The guy in the transporter room doesn’t have a name but has been here two or three times. It was so hard not calling Geordi chief engineer. Never played with puppies??!! No wonder Picard is so grumpy. “Consider me then!” LOL welcome to season 2

reply

Worf wearing Security Chief Tasha colors finally looks like Worf!

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

New crew members, crew members in new positions, new era, new adventures. I hope everyone is as excited as I am. P.S. I'm just as big a Pulaski truther as I am a Troi truther so look for me for me to be climbing up on my Pulaski soapbox in the comment section as well lol

bunnytails

I appreciate you not giving any answers! I hope everyone else will be as thoughtful. I didn't make the connection between Polaski and McCoy, but I can see the similarities.

bunnytails

Looks weird to me! But I'll get used to it I'm sure.

bunnytails

Even without saying things outright I can infer meaning through vague statements like those you have made. The only thing that will make me happy is people respecting my no spoiler wishes.

Summer

I loved Bev too,

NateWiz

I was waiting in dreadful glee for your reaction to the new doctor, I felt the same back when it 1st aired. I thought who is this lady where's my Beverly? and why is she being mean to Data treating him like a thing.

Super Sunny Sunblade

The opening scene looked to me like "getting incubused" too 🙀

Welcome to Season 2! There were a LOT of changes with this season -- in fact, this is one of the most 'shakeup' seasons I can recall watching for ANY TV program. Some of these have already been talked about, but I'll touch on the major ones (and no spoilers of course). 1) The biggest is Gates McFadden being replaced by Diana Muldaur, and I was also very unhappy when this happened when I first saw it. Officially, McFadden had chosen to leave as she didn't like her character development, the same reason given for Crosby departing during the first season. However, she had actually been fired by Showrunner Maurice Hurley. Creative differences and McFadden complaining about her character being written are the reasons given. In any case, it was a big loss. At least they got someone very good to try to fill in for her. I recognized Diana right away as having guest started in a TOS episode, and Bunny herself reminded me later it was actually two. She's a very good actress and if you just take her character on it's own and NOT as a replacement she's very good in the role. 2) Whoppie Goldburg actually WANTED to join the show. Goldberg had been actively pursuing a role on the series, as Nichelle Nichols' portrayal of Uhura on The Original Series had inspired her to become an actress. Her agent was initially ignored by the producers, as they did not believe that she wanted to be on the series until Goldberg called them herself. Her character was named after Mary "Texas" Guinan, a prohibition-era speakeasy owner. She also is amazing in her role. 3) Wesley, as someone else said, was Roddenberry's 'pet project'. With Gene not as involved with Season 2 (he was still active in day to day affairs but didn't have as much control or input as he did with Season 1) the writers struggled with what to do with him. 4) The aforementioned Writers Strike also REALLY impacted the entire season of Star Trek. Not only did it result in a shorter season by 4 episodes, but it also had a huge impact on the episodes and how they were written and produced. The budget was increased though, since the show was doing really well in syndication and Paramount was making money. 5) I think Riker looks great with a beard, and I can recall the talk when this was new that most people felt the same way. 6) You mentioned having seen the man in the Transporter Room before -- that's Chief O'Brien, who was in two episodes of Season One. 7) LaForge being made the Chief Engineer was a GREAT pick, and it really makes me wonder WHY they didn't do that from the first episode, and they didn't decide on a Chief Engineer all during the first Season! 8) Ten Forward is indeed a new location -- it was built in part thanks to the increased budget. As the name may imply, it's located on Deck 10, in the most forward part of the saucer section, giving a great view into space from it's windows. No wonder Wes liked to go there. 9) This is the first 'Troi heavy' episode we've seen and I'm REALLY glad they did so. I never felt like Troi was used very well in the first Season, as it took time for the writers to decide what to actually DO with her character. Totally agree her acting was amazing in this episode. 10) And finally, as you noticed, there were indeed small changes to the opening music and the opening presentation. So -- the episode itself. It's alright. Not the best episode to open a new season with, but it wasn't the worst either. The 'A' plot I would argue was Troi and her baby with the 'B' plot being what was going on with the Enterprises current mission -- which was to transport a number of dangerous viruses from one planet to a starbase for research purposes and to try to find a cure for a plague hitting another world. It felt like a clumsy effort at the end to tie the two plots together, and while I really like the baby plotline, it seems it would have been better suited for another episode. It just felt very slow paced and kind of 'forced' in sections, like the producers were afraid about how the watchers were going to handle such radical changes and shake up's in the show with this new season so they wanted to 'play it safe' with the opening episode. Finally, I had the same thought you did Bunny -- even as a kid watching this when it was new. It sure did seem like Troi was you-know-what at the start. To spin it in the most generous way, the alien life form forced it's way into her and became a baby without her consent OR knowledge. A lot of people really dislike this episode due to things like this, I'd argue it's still in the 'average' territory.

뱀파이안젤

I imagined The Starship Enterprise vs Parasite Eve 1's The Ultimate Being starfighting in the most epic outer space opera battle ever... But I guess they just didn't feel like going there this episode XD (Then again, not sure how I'd feel about an "Ultimate Being" space baby with MY name 😅)

William Terry

Great reacts bunny! Numerous green sprouts in the season two debut. Just having LaForge in the Scotty role where he can give much needed exposition is the biggest impact. Having him stuck at a bridge console was a waste of Levar Burton's great voice. Unfortunately Data is still mostly doing the comic scenes.

Mark Chrisco

Origionally Data was supposed to be pronounced the way Pulaski did. Patrick Stewart was the first to say the name onscreen and said it as we have come to know. The rest of the cast picked up on it and followed his lead.

John DiGiantomasso

Ah yes, the "Beard, Pulaski, and Pajamas" Season. 🤔

John DiGiantomasso

Roddenberry's whole concept for LaForge was the irony of having a blind navigator. Cool and all, but I think the lack of a regular main cast chief engineer really left some gaps in Season 1. Promoting Geordi was a good move for improved drama and storytelling.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Pulaski is supposed to be the same sort of grumpy old country doctor that Bones was, rough around the edges but soft and loveable on the inside. I'm a real sucker for those types of changes which is why I love Doc P. as much as I do.

timothy w moyer

I'm glad you watched this one. Yeppers, a couple, three surprises there. Loved the WIDE EYED Bunny eyes, " She's WHAT???" and Tashar was cute as well. Now you know why there's a bar and relaxed un winding place. And it's GORGEOUS looking out of the windows as the Enterprise cruses. Buckle up, Season 2 is just starting 🥹🖖

Desmond

Ten Forward is a great location/set, one place that pretty much any Trek fan would like to visit and have a drink at. As for Whoopi Goldberg/Guinan, she actually wanted to be on the show; Nichelle Nichols was an inspiration for her growing up.

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

This one never really sat right with me. Not to put too fine a point on it but yeah, the whole thing feels too "rapey" for comfort. Which, yeah, you can do stories about that kind of subject matter, but to me it just feels like the whole thing should feel weightier, mare consequential, rather than fodder for what is frankly a fairly rote alien first contact story. That's not a knock on Marina Sirtis, who does an incredible job with what there is to work with in this script. It just doesn't seem like the whole story lands with the impact it should. At least, that's my take. (Although, I have to admit, I laughed out loud when you said "Did that thing go inside her hoo-ha?". Maybe I still am a teenage boy) As has been said by numerous posters already, the significance of the story itself is overshadowed by the shake ups in the status quo of the crew. Guinan and 10 Forward are fantastic elements. Putting Geordi in the Chief Engineer role is a huge improvement over the random shuffle of characters in S1 and is IMO an absolutely critical part of solidifying the cast dynamic. And then there's Pulaski. I had such mixed feelings, as Diane Muldaur had all the "Trek-cred" one could ask for. "is There No Truth in Beauty" is one of my absolute all time favorites (and I know we share that opinion, Bunny), and she was darn good in "Return to Tomorrow" as well. So there's a lot of built in goodwill there right off the bat. On the other hand, she's replacing Beverly Crusher and thats rough, to say the least. McFadden played Bev as having such a welcome aura of warmth and compassion that really filled a needed role Pulaski's vibe is a different. I'll be interested to see how you react to her character going forward Bunny because, well, yeah. Different dynamic. Thats all I'll say and reserve my opinion until we get further in. Oh, and yeah, this is my favorite outfit for Troi. At least, of her regular costumes

Carlos Stevens

So... Bunny... Does (did) Dr. Pulaski look at all familiar to you? (not a spoiler since you've seen it already)... "Return To Tomorrow" and "Is There No Truth In Beauty." I ask this question before watching this watch-along.

Carlos Stevens

Are we sure that Riker wasn't replaced with Mirror Universe Riker?

Jack

I'll wait to say more later, but I really, really like Dr. Pulaski (Diana Muldaur) and Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) on the crew. Some non-spoilery production fun: You mentioned the Ten Forward set (called that because it's on deck 10, section 1) seemed familiar. It was used (lightly redressed) as the Federation President's office in Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country. Sick Bay gets its own dedicated set this season. Through all of season 1, the Observation Lounge (the conference room set with the table) set was redressed for Sick Bay (you can see they just covered the windows). Did you notice the change to Captain Picard's chair?

Carlos Stevens

OMG! (At the Intro) You didn't recognize the Excelsior Class Star Ship???

Carlos Stevens

WHY ARE ENERGY SPACE ALIENS SO RAPEY!

Carlos Stevens

He He... Ok... You did indeed recognize her.

bunnytails

I'll give Pulaski a pass due to her being played by Ms Muldaur

bunnytails

That's awesome that she was inspired by Nichelle <3

bunnytails

I love the look and atmosphere of Ten Forward!

bunnytails

I don't think I generally pay much attention to the chairs lol. What changed?

Stainless Steel Cat

I didn't enjoy this episode when I first saw it - I missed Beverley a lot too. But at least we AT LAST have a chief engineer we know we'll see more than once!

TrekinJenn

The way you felt watching this episode is exactly how I felt the first time I saw it. Beverly Crusher was my favorite character, and she was gone right after Tasha Yar had already been written off. I remember thinking, What?! Why are my favorite characters being written out one after the other? I like Dr. Pulaski, but she is no Dr. Beverly Crusher to me.

Greg

We actually have heard his name already...or read it, at least. :) He was named n the subtitles of the pilot "Encounter at Farpoint".

Mark Gosine

Racey 80's TV plot but grounded in Sci-Fi. I don't think there was one watcher of Trek at the time that wasn't jarred by all the changes. We all probably have forgotten this experience and seeing it all again through your eyes was a memory recall. Especially as I was never a fan of the actress, Diana Muldaur, up to this point. No particular reason. However, she really grew on me as Doctor Pulaski. Season 2 Engage!

Max

So the child was "Space" Jesus? (Self-sacrificed to save everyone) Or was Spock "Space" Jesus? Or do we need a Season 3: The Search for Beverly? :(

Summer

I am so sorry people have given you so many spoilers, remember this, half of fans, even who will comment on videos, have forgotten something significant about whatever they are saying about Trek, even obsessive re watchers like me

InfinitelyJesting

Resubbed to Patreon because I couldn't wait to see how long it would take for you to realize Beverly was gone. If it's any consolation, America felt the same way and wrote many angry letters.

bunnytails

I am going to write an angry letter as well!

Comrade Wireless Caller

Love how this episode starts off so early on with "The Riker Maneuver!" The Child though I still think is kind of an odd episode to start off season 2 of TNG. The whole experience itself is so abnormal. But what's a normal experience for the 24th century and for us can be really quite different. It's likely that from a bonding standpoint they'd view these kind of experiences, because of their long history of encountering alien life forms, less like 'I had a child' and more like 'I had an alien parasite for a while.' One would hope at least between the incredibly short gestation period and 24th century medicine the whole ordeal wouldn't be that traumatic in the long term; physically or emotionally

Thegonagle

The plasma plague sub-plot was just a McGuffin that wasn’t even resolved, unless “good luck with that plague research, hope an entire planet doesn’t die, so long!” is a resolution.

Thegonagle

As much as I didn’t like learning Dr. Crusher left when I first watched, I actually think Dr. Pulaski is a great character, and a damn fine space doctor.
