Summer

This is one of my least fave of the season but great approaches

Even Data realizes the rizz that Riker's beard commands after noticing Okana's beard's rizz the other episode ago!

I do like this episode, but I agree it's not for everyone. It's the classic sci-fi trope of man vs machine, and the quest to cheat death, ideas we've seen a lot both in and out of Star Trek. It's a thought provoking episode for sure but it's slow paced and not super exciting. As usual great guest actors again though. Graves was played by Morgan Sheppard who had over 100 movie and TV show credits to his name during his long career, and he did a great job in the role. Kareen was played by Barbara Alyn Woods who went on to star in some TV shows. Also as Bunny mentioned great job by Brent Spiner. It's fun to see cases in which actors get to go outside their role and characters for a episode or two and 'stretch their wings' so to say. This episode has a mixed reaction, which seems right in talking about it over the years with other fans -- some hate it and some really like it. I think it does grow on you with repeated viewings.

So Picard gave one KILLER speech at the end there huh 💀🖖

Hi bunny, you look beautiful 🤩 Good episode! Graves is more The Stalker Man than schizoid personality. I don't think Data has much influence on his actions. Nice ominous story. Makes me wonder what the plan is if/when Data goes rogue. Having him beat people up, again, works so far, but he's much stronger than Spock was and Scotty could point a phaser at him. So long as men can breathe or eyes can see is from the Shakespearean sonnet 18 that starts with shall I compare thee to a summer's day?

Fun fact, the model of the Enterprise D was so large (over 6ft long ) and front heavy, it had to be filmed upside down

Super Sunny Sunblade

Hey old guy, you don't gotta exclaim aloud what "lovely females" they are to the two literal MINDREADER species gals 😹

InfinitelyJesting

I can see how you didn't like Ira, but he was supposed to be unlikable. An arrogant selfish genius who, with the help of Picard, was able to give up eternal life for the sake of others. My favorite part was the confrontation with Picard and the way Picard was able to convince him he was wrong.

InfinitelyJesting

But yeah if I was a chick and one of a character's first lines was, "You're not a person, you're a woman." I might have a problem watching his character or being interested in any kind of redemption story for him, so I get it.

Mark Gosine

Yes, good episode, but not great. As Greg Polander says, it is classic sci-fi. More so as the trope of man merging with machine. Very poignant today with respect to the high-tech mad men driving headlong towards the 'singularly' (which I do not condone, nor I think possible, nor desirable). On a lighter note. It is interesting that Diana Muldaur is credited as guest star. I hadn't really noticed that before. In the 60's, Johnathan Harris demanded he be credited as a 'Special Guest' star in all credits for the show, Lost in Space, even though he was a regular cast member. What a gasser, man (60's slang)! CBS gave him what he wanted.

Mark Gosine

Never really got that one. To me, it always seemed forced and bad dialog even if it was meant to highlight his crassness. Just a bad line.

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

I hope this doesn't taint your opinion of older, somewhat arrogant and eccentric men named Graves, Bunny! I'll second the "good but not great " sentiment. The highlight here is getting to see Spiner show off his acting chops. I think he does a wonderful job of not only changing up his performance, but also echoing the performance of the older Graves actor. I have to hand it to Spiner, at no point was I at all questioning that this was one seamless character, despite being performed by two actors. Pretty impressive if you think about it. There's also some interesting and fun nods to some concepts in Asimov's later works, though I won't spoil that in case you ever read more of his stuff. Oh, speaking of which, I read the first chapter of Pillars of the Earth today. Very impressed so far!

Stainless Steel Cat

Dr Selar, my second TNG crush after Beverley. I think it's a shame Gene Roddenberry wanted to move away from Vulcans in this series, we've barely seen them at all.

WastedPo

It's especially silly when you realize that, at best, they saved about 1 second of extra time to pull that maneuver.

WastedPo

I've always liked this episode, mostly for the humor of Brent Spiner acting as someone else trying to pretend to be Data. And the "To know him is to love him" scene always makes me laugh. But you're right that it could've been much more profound, given the premise. And yes, it does feel like it wraps up a little too quickly.

Max

Wait, he's Data's grandad & he's dying?! :0

Max

Oh no Data... Why are you so innocent with that tmi mouth of yours :(

Carlos Stevens

"Schizoid..." EGAD!... that sounds like me!

bunnytails

He hasn't done much problem solving so far this season.

bunnytails

The funeral scene was definitely the highlight, as well as Wesley being tickled by it.

TJ

This was an average episode, but not one that I ever think about when TNG comes to mind. Graves was too over-the-top arrogant and unrelatable for me to really care about his character. This episode did show Brent Spiner's acting range, which was a plus.

John DiGiantomasso

If I was a transporter officer, I'd randomly beam people about six inches off the floor, just to wake them up now and again.

Andrew Westcott

This was the only on screen appearance of Dr. Selar, however she is mentioned and/or paged in several other episodes.
