Already episode 10. Great stuff coming at least two other reactors wondered if it was Anya in Wesley’s quarters at first not the best episode

Jim Jones

A "dauphin" was the title given to the heir apparent to the French throne, essentially, the next king of France. I felt the goal of this episode was the crew struggling with understanding Anya’s behavior; and respecting a system that doesn’t align with Federation norms. It's really just a classic Star Trek setup: “We think we’re advanced, but we don’t fully understand others.” Wesley is a hormonal teenager. He's losing a girl he (thinks he) loves and let's that frustration make poor coping decisions, like accusing her of playing a game. Mousse abuse is a crime!

I agree this is not the best episode -- as Bunny pointed out, it's confusing and has plot holes, it's kind of slow paced, and the writing is all over the place, with it being great in parts and not great in others. However, this is one of those episodes that has always had a soft spot in my heart. Perhaps it's due to the fact I was 14 when it first aired, not much younger then Wes, and was starting to get into girls, and the girl playing Salia is very cute (again as Bunny noted) so I really could agree with understand what he was going through. Did he act the best? No, but he's a teen. We all did stupid things at that age, and we're still struggling to figure out how to act, how to feel, how to handle situations. I was also quite happy to see a Wes focused episode, as we really haven't seen much of him this season. After the backlash from how he was used in Season 1 the writers put him on the back seat for this season, and that really wasn't fair to Will Wheaton as he's a good actor. The whole 'flirting' exchange between Riker and Guian is a bit weird, yes, but I think it just snowballed from Riker trying to show Wes how he might flirt into two very experienced lovers role playing with each other right there. For the best we don't have replicators, Bunny, the temptation of all that chocolate would be very hard to resist. :)

The Dauphin was the heir apparent to the king of France, like the Prince of Wales is the HA to the British throne. Interestingly the British liked to pronounce it "dolphin", to get under their skin, like when the French call the British "rosbif" because they always overcook and undercook their food.

John DiGiantomasso

The fact that Anya felt "you are a minute threat therefore you must die" could explain why their planet has been at war forever. It's amazing every mom didn't kill everybody - including their own side.

lol, the Guinan/Riker stuff was just Guinan being playful to see how far Riker would go with it. They weren't seriously flirting. "Dauphin" was a title given to the heir apparent to the throne of France, which equates to the role of Salia. Good reference to Elaan, from TOS. It's definitely a similar kind of story. There are certain tropes that tend to repeatedly come up on Trek; this is one, also the brilliant diplomat who is the ONLY ONE who can bring peace to two warring peoples, most recently seen in Loud As a Whisper. Anyway, mostly mediocre episode. Some good/funny stuff with Worf, and also the Riker/Guinan scene, otherwise nothing much to write home about.

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

I don't have a lot to say about this one. It's ... fine i guess? It's got some nice enough moments but was just kinda slow paced and feels iike there should be "more". Maybe more of a B plot would have picked up the pace a bit. I do agree that the glimpse at what flips Worf's trigger was a highlight! :)

This one is... meh for me. It has some fun moments, but it's really uneven. It's pretty much a filler episode. Kind of a steep decline from the peak that was "The Measure of a Man". The part that always annoyed me to no end was that the security team seems to have forgotten that they were issued PHASERS. We don't have to go toe-to-toe with Anya like we're doing Wookiee MMA. Let her ride the lightning and wake up in the brig wondering what happened.

The name of this episode also confused me... so I asked AI. This was the response (and it make sense): "The significance of the episode's name, "The Dauphin", lies in its direct reference to Salia's role as the heir to the throne of Daled IV. Literal Meaning: "Dauphin" was the title given to the heir apparent to the French throne. The episode uses this historical title to signify that Salia is the crown princess and future ruler of her planet, destined to end a generations-long civil war between its two factions. Central Theme: The title underscores the episode's core conflict: duty versus personal desire. Salia is torn between her personal feelings for Wesley Crusher and her immense responsibility to return to her war-torn planet and fulfill her destiny as its leader. Her title as the Dauphin means her life is not her own. Grammatical Note: As noted in several reviews, the title uses the masculine form "Dauphin." Since Salia is female, the grammatically correct French form would be "La Dauphine" (which is indeed the title used for the episode in the French dub). "

Carlos Stevens

"No bad guys in this episode... just people." This is literally Gene Roddenberry's vision for Star Trek.

Carlos Stevens

...And I really did like Guinan in this one. And yeah... Riker and Guinan were just flirting... Did you figure out who was more experienced with the flirting thing though?

I enjoyed seeing your reaction to the holodeck scene where Wesley and the girl were looking at the planet with the rings! It's really nice to see your reactions to star trek! They're really neat! Btw, I love your shirt. It's pretty!

bunnytails

True, I would cause that replicator to break down having it make me 5th Avenues!

bunnytails

lol I was waiting for more budding romance between Riker and Guinan in future episodes :P

bunnytails

I have now. I've passed your message to Rezerek so he can update the list.

Wesley felt catfished. But still went back...

timothy w moyer

I guess you can call this the "Goo Goo Eyes" episode. Aliens with other kinds of presence with humans. Naaaa., the ending was fine. Chocolate does cross species lines, tho 😊

reply

Since Worf recognized the grandma as a worthy opponent, I feel Worf would get a real thrill going up against the RE9 grandma!

TJ

Measure of a Man was definitely a tough act to follow. The Dauphin (i.e. heir apparent) was a decent Wesley episode, but the plot lacked pacing, and Anya was written rather oddly. It's probably one of those stories that seemed better on paper than what actually transpired... And yes, there were no "bad guys" or conflict between our characters, which was a Roddenberry thing. He believed that by the 24th century, humans were essentially perfect, and many of the writers were frustrated back in the late 80s b/c they felt constrained by that doctrine. By Season 3, Gene was pushed to the less active "Creative Consultant" role, and Rick Berman took over as showrunner. That freed up the writers to tell better, more realistic stories. Don't get me wrong, though, Season 2 overall was a significant improvement over Season 1.

TNG costume designers need a raise!

Sigma957

I wonder if you might consider watching two episodes per week for Patreon members. I love your TNG reactions but knowing that it'll take you 3+ years is a wee bit depressing... 😥

Greg

She does what she can. She works part time, as well as starting a reaction to Babylon 5 now, she streams 5 days a week for about 15-20 hours, and she edits movies for her reaction channel as well.

Sigma957

Thanks for the info. I asked as I was unaware of her schedule ✌️

Desmond

Well, you never know...stay tuned. ;P

The flirting is the best part

InfinitelyJesting

You brought up a good point about why the heck they pretended to be human to begin with. Even if they were successful, they would've had to reveal their true nature at the end when she was transporting down. Makes no sense LOL.

bunnytails

I've done two a week here and there but I can't do it every week
