Another super fun one, and with a great guest actor. Good character development for Riker, Data and Pulaski (sorry if there were others but it's been a while since I saw this) and just generally a fun romp! This episode really busted it up for us. I'm looking forward to watching it with you and hoping you enjoy it as much as I did!

Summer

Great one! Bring on season 3!

Greg

I also really enjoy this episode, for the same reasons Bunny did, and consider it one of the strongest ones for Season 2. Roy Brocksmith played the 'shrew guy' and I agree he was great in that role. He was a steady film and TV actor, although he never got much attention sadly. His other best roles are in the movie Total Recall and the TV show Picket Fences. Armin Shimerman is back once again playing another Ferengi, we've seen him in two other TNG episodes already. He's a very good actor and had a regular role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and also voiced Andrew Ryan in the BioShock games. I have always loved that line that Picard gives Data in his quarters: "It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness; that is life." It's been made into posters, meme's, and many other facets. The show saved money again by re-using the Constellation-class model that they had on hand -- we've already seen that in at least two other TNG episodes. There's only one episode left in Season 2, and then we are off to a new season with yet more changes and new stuff happening, and I'm here for all of it!

What fun, I think you had more fun than I did watching this one, Copy that Bunny, you ..."Busted 'em up" I can tell you really enjoyed that one. Great twist on the war game theme

Jim Jones

"It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life." One of the best and most memorable quotes in all of Trekdom. Fun fact! In some of the bridge scenes in this episode (and others) if you look at the display screens in the back of the bridge when Picard is talking you'll see black paper covering parts of them. They had to do that because of reflections of the camera crews could easily be seen.

Falconheart

One of my favorite Trek episodes, and it was very fun to see you watch it for the first time. Love this!

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I'm just here for the Kolrami impersonations. How did that excitable little walk go again, B? *💪arms swinging emphatically side to side 💪*😉😆 I adore Riker and Worf's friendship. "The honour is to serve." Stop 😭 And just a great Riker episode all around, the humour, the command presence, how they're tied together like Picard said. Good stuff.

Brian Straight

I mean, "really" this is the last episode of S2.

Paul Hess

Great reaction, and I forgot all about my favorite all time Pulaski comeback: Picard: "I'm less than one hour from a battle simulation and I have to nursemaid an android" Pulaski: "The burdens of command" It's all in the delivery! I admit that like many others I never really liked her character, but she's a great actress and had some wonderful appearances on TOS and other series besides this.

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

See this is why Bunny is awesome. "We couldn't have gotten this character arc if..." YES! see, Bunny gets it! Personally I think it's very cool (and good writing) that they slowly moved Pulaski along this path. She goes from skepticism and almost dismissiveness toward the idea of an android, to the point where here she actually is pushing Data to be a "champion" for the Ship. And the way we saw the relationship develop over the series was done in a nicely gradual way. Good stuff. As with so much, the Wesley stuff is dependent on whether you buy into the character or not. I remembe some push back from the haters about him cheating. But I'd point out that, in addition to Bunny's point about war, everyone involved and in authority basically signed off on Wes going back to the ship. It's not his fault if they failed to see the significance until too late. And in any case, if there are any other objections I'll drop a quote from a certain movie: "He cheated!"1 "I got a commendation fro original thinking." And Bunny, I got a kick out of how you basically called it with the the stalemate ending. And naming him "shrew guy" had me LOLing. Great episode and this reaction was a blast to watch. Thank you!

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

*Thank you* for your comment re Pulaski and Data, B, I've made that exact argument myself many times. It's *clearly* supposed to be a redemptive story arc, but instead folk seem intent on treating tv characters like real people, at least in the comment section "She said a mean thing once, we have to hold her accountable!" or some such. I once left a comment somewhere that I liked Pulaski and immediately received a giant psychological breakdown in my replies of why she was an awful person, actually, and here's why I should hate her. Wild stuff.

Carlos Stevens

hmmm... he reminds you of a shrew??? Like Peter Pettigrew???

Carlos Stevens

In this episode there was a lot of coalescing of characters into what I would call their default persona. And I don't know who's hating on Pulaski... whom ever they are needs to shut up. Pulaski is awesome.

Carlos Stevens

Pulaski is not mean... She's just... TNG Dr. McCoy. Opinionated and hates the transporter.

Stainless Steel Cat

Together with Measure of a Man, this is my equal favourite episode of season 2. It's the perfect balance of humour, action and the characters being their absolute best. Picard's pride in Riker is just so heartwarming. One thing is that I think the threat here had to be the Ferengi. Klingons or Romulans might have viewed another Starfleet ship as a challenge and stayed long enough to see through Worf's deception, but the Ferengi quickly made up their minds that the risk of an equal fight wasn't worth the potential profit and skedaddled. Nitpick: Worf knew Enterprise's security codes and bypassed them to fool their sensors, how did he do that with the Ferengi? Or did they just see the Hathaway coming back and didn't stop to recognise it?

Muggy

He said "hand-hold". I can't imagine picard nursing data.

Muggy

I believe that there is only 22 episodes in this season. Troubles in Hollywood at the time, I think. I mostly remember polaski doing "taming of the schrew" type stories in 60's and early seventies shows. Rich man's fiery, unmarried older daughter gets hooked up with rough ambitious man. I thought of it when you mentioned schrew.

Paul Hess

@Muggy thanks for the correction. LOL! My memory does funny things sometimes.

Thank the final frontier for Wesley's genius science project warp timing down to the millisecond, or we'd not get seasons 3 through 7! TNG isn't TNG without the full crew!

William Terry

"All warfare is based on deception." Sun Tzu

Alexandre Santos

Hi Bunny, any plans for a Top TNG season 2 episodes? Would be nice to know your overall impression of the series so far before we enter season 3.

bunnytails

I think this might be just under Measure of a Man for me. Both excellent episodes!

bunnytails

I think those people are mostly in the YouTube comments. To each their own!

bunnytails

Ugh! Who even ARE these people!? Characters who start at rock bottom (Pulaski wasn't that bad but she did start at a lower point) and then show significant growth are some of my favorite characters ever!

bunnytails

Aww thank you, and I agree! Great callback to Kirk and the Kobayashi Maru, also!

bunnytails

Yes, I enjoyed this very much! A top season 2 episode for me!

TJ

Data saying "I busted him up" always cracks me up! This was a great episode where, as you pointed out, everyone played an important role. Roy Brocksmith, who played Kolrami, was just plain brilliant in that guest role... Great catch when the two Ferengi appeared on the view screen. That was Armin Shimerman on the left playing Bractor. He played a different Ferengi in Season 1's "The Last Outpost"... I couldn't agree with you more on Diana Muldaur. Some in the fan base were way too hostile towards her.
