Emma

"...seen this before, possibly multiple times" Umm 🤨

Emma

Did Kosh's viewer look a little like the Guardian in the City on the Edge of Forever, showing images of Earth's past?

Emma

Roses never offend a woman except by their absence.

Ivanova is wearing a pair of earrings. Normally, she has a stud in her left ear.

Emma

The Abbai delegation arrived from Abba IV. Coincidentally, Abba's fourth album is Arrival.

Emma

Tristan Rogers was born in Melbourne, so the accent was genuine. At the end, Malcolm and the other prisoners were to be transported back to Earth aboard the Botany Beach. The First Fleet of eleven convict ships set sail for Botany Bay, arriving on 20 January 1788 to found Sydney, New South Wales, the first European settlement on the continent. Of course, you probably hear the term Botany Bay in the voice of Chekhov. "Botany Bay. Botany Bay. Captain, we must get out of here"

Londo and love. This is the early days of the show, and scripts are being written by various writers who only have an outline of the characters. The script editing will try to smooth out inconsistencies a bit, but there are going to be some incongruities from time to time. This is how I rationalise the difference in behaviour between Born to the Purple and this episode. I just accept it for what it is. As for my feelings on the episode. Originally, I did not like the episode very much, but on many rewatches, it has gone up in my estimation. The Homeguard plot is OK, but I like the B-story with the young lovers. I do like seeing Ivanova in a different light and her discarding the rose. Here, the star-crossed lovers suggest Romeo and Juliet, but through Londo's about-face, the story has a happy ending instead. Romeo and Juliet also features the lines: "What's in a name? That which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet;" By Any Other Name is the name of one of the original Star Trek episodes, written by D.C. Fontana and Jerome Bixby.

The War Prayer is Mark Twain's antiwar parable, in which a mysterious stranger reveals the unspoken horror beneath a congregation's patriotic prayer for victory.

They have the racist guy in custody and after his incriminating statement they drag him out and next thing he's in a hospital bed. Didn't his lawyer say shutup racist guy? I never heard of anyone breaking diplomatic immunity and just killing all the ambassadors, not even in world war two. The part of Aria is played by actress mathematician Danica McKellar. She was in The Wonder Years and later Inspector Mom.

I agree that this is a solid episode, although not a top tier episode. I have to say that Delenn and Mayan come off as a little hypocritical in the last scene, expressing incredulity that there is fanatical human faction trying to sow division. Has Delenn already forgotten that we just had a fanatical Minbari murdering people on the station in an attempt to start a war? When it was a Minbari causing trouble, Sinclair tells Delenn that she can't be held responsible for the actions of all Minbari. When the situation is reversed, Delenn goes with a contemptuous, "Humans ways are often unfathomable." I'm not pointing this our as a criticism of the show or the suggest that Delenn is a villain. I just think it's another case of how complex, and at times flawed, the characters on this show are.

Greg

Good episode. Not amazing, but fun and interesting to see a plot line hinted at in past episodes and learn more about characters.

DC Fontana... part of your weekly Star Trek-B5 cross-DNA. Yeah, looks like Ivanova inherited Takashima's coffee beans lol So my mom watched a daily soap opera called "General Hospital" when I was a kid... the guy who plays Susan's ex (Biggs) was a big star on that show... I totally marked out when I saw him the first time I saw this episode. :P "Earth First". I re-watch this series every few years... this show hits harder and closer to home with each passing year. As to your first question... your B5 reactions are one of my favourite parts of the week. This week in particular (My shoes are feeling too tight as well...)

Emma

B5 Lawyers are scary.

MertzRocks

Kirk to Spock and McCoy in that ep: "I'm stimulating him!"

MertzRocks

And in TOS ep 'Space Seed' too. Khan's ship was the Botany Bay, but Spock could find no record of a ship registered with that name.

MertzRocks

That had to be Dottie's script, and for whatever reason the script editor left that bit in. 🤷

MertzRocks

Yes. And maybe The Guardian of forever was made by some first ones...

Texas Anla'Shok

Londo was in love with Adira. He was not married to her.

Texas Anla'Shok

Homeguard's plan: Step 1: Kill all major ambassadors Step 2: Start wars with every major power in the quadrant Step 3: ??? Step 4: Profit

I hope I never forget how to dance

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

Ivanova in this: yum! Good episode. Not quite as well executed as the last two but still definitely a good one. "They aren't very good are they", Yeah, it's almost as if giving a bigot a gun and a scary outfit doesn't make them competent. OK enough of that. I did kinda get the feeling that Londo was written a bit inconsistently here. It's a first season so, I'm thinking its just a matter of writers getting a feel for the characters. I'm definitely enjoying watching B5 with you Bunny! :)

Philip

Danica McKellar also had a recurring role as Elsie Snuffin (Will Bailey's step-sister) in "The West Wing."

Philip

Glad you enjoyed the episode, Bunny. Sinclair and Ivanova also shine in this episode. We already had hints in earlier episodes, but this episode highlights their strong moral compass.

Trish

It also showed a future alien

Thomas Schorsch

When racists get going, they usually can't shut up. Roberts was picked up because he was very vocal about his racism. Biggs was the other type, only revealing himself when he's around other fanatics.

Jack

I thought exactly the same thing. Delenn and G'Kar can stand there and sneer down their noses and tut-tut, but neither the Minbari nor the Narn have an inch of room to talk!

bunnytails

? I don't remember well enough what this is referring to

bunnytails

You make a good point about early days and different writers and such.

bunnytails

I'm so glad you're enjoying these reactions!

Emma

You mentioned it at the beginning of the episode in the intro. I have seen these episodes more than I should mention, and I'm probably not alone in that.

Emma

I wonder if it was a coincidence that the racist was named Malcolm Biggs. Biggs is an unusual surname, yet we also have Richard Biggs.

George N

Jeez I just made the Harlan Ellison connection to your comment...

Emma

I like to think the production put that in as a nod to Harlan, but given how much Harlan hated the TOS episode and Gene, perhaps not. Since Dorothy did a lot of rewriting of City, I think it is more a nod to her.
