And I'd also watched on Nebula before commenting. Just... can't be on socials at the moment

Watched on Nebula; brilliant work as always. I felt the conclusion was spot on; I hadn’t considered how badly we need more visions of a better future in our media, but it rung REALLY true after watching this. One question I had (which I realize only F.D. can answer and no sweat if he’d rather not, but I am VERY curious) is if his “giving up” on a certain subset of the “pro-edgelord” men on the internet comes from text-based online interactions (like comment sections, Twitter, livestream comments, whatever). I know his conclusion on those guys was “my work isn’t for them yet” and not “they’re forever irredeemable,” but it kinda read to me like “these guys just can’t get what I’m saying now.” I guess my thought is that you really never know someone’s mental space when they’re on an online forum. When we approach online forums with openness and curiosity, we tend to assume other people will do the same, especially if we’re really good at showing our openness. But the person on the other side may literally be arguing with you to vent frustration after having a fight with their partner. They might barely be reading what you’re saying while arguing with other people on ten other tabs about different shit. They could be literally trolling you, and not fully buying into the stuff they’re saying. All this to say, I think that a lot of those guys who are so frustrating in forums could be a lot more open and receptive if you treat them like humans when you interact face-to-face. And I know that, if and when I do that, and we start to have some of these conversations and they get curious about other ways to approach masculinity, F.D. Signifier will be one of the first places I’m directing them. And I think they’ll get a lot out of it, even if they wouldn’t have gotten much out of the same videos (and might have even left shitty comments) if they didn’t have a supportive IRL person who they could talk to about it.

damn this is good! thanks for the work unc <3

The conclusion you come to here has actually been on my mind a lot regarding superhero movies featuring women. When entertainment makes unmistakable messages about “this is a social critique!”, the media usually just isn’t that great.

I feel bad for not watching the first draft posted here earlier: I got the notification but some stuff was going on so I put it off and then this week happened. I will reiterate what I said on the first post: Rorschach from Watchmen is like one of the first examples of what you talk about.

Victor

Did you know that Nebula removed many content creators from their platform for speaking out against the genocide in Gaza? Also, can we get a full video on what your mentor was talking about? He was on point. If you're paying attention, you can see the indoctrination and propaganda in almost every form of digital media today.

I think that statement is ABUNDANTLY true for superhero movies featuring women (it honestly comes across as kind of cringe to watch sometimes), but I do think there are some really powerful counterexamples. Two movies that come to mind for me are Parasite and The Menu. I’m interested in what makes those films different from the examples discussed in this video. I feel like some of it might be the depth of their analysis (a lot of the films F.D. talks about basically amount to “look at this bad thing and how it’s bad”, while I feel like the films I mentioned add a lot more layers and nuance to their analysis, while using cinematography rather than dialogue to convey a lot of their points. But there may be other elements that distinguish good social commentary films from bland ones.

Shannon

It’s funny you say that, I watched The Menu for the first time just 3 days ago and it’s been lodged firmly in my mind ever since. I think heroic action stories are a bad medium for getting a leftist point across. It makes sense that people just won’t get the social critiques of war, militarism, or toxic masculinity when you’re making those things look so cool. That’s why so often, they end up winking so hard at the audience to the point that it’s just bad writing. I think a thing that’s very effective in The Menu is Chef isn’t cool and the violence in the movie isn’t cool. I don’t think Chef is an angry white man at all, he doesn’t seem bent on revenge so much as at peace with the solution that he’s decided upon. The ending feels somewhat good, but not great and certainly not heroic. I think remaining uncomfortable at the end is why this and Parasite work: there isn’t a comfortable happy ending under capitalism. Going for a Hollywood happy ending just means your protagonist is a capitalist now, and you’ve abandoned your whole argument.

Thank you for the Garth Marenghi's Darkplace representation.

I`d like to add a different perspective on the latest Joker movie, through the lens of logotherapy/existencial-analysis and survived edgelorddom. First, I think the movie tries to wrestle with personal accountablility ie. responsibility, while suffering from childhood trauma and depressive disorders. There are many perspectives you can have on that subject, especially when it comes to blame. More on that later... Secondly, it tries to tackle what Alfred Adler (founder of individual psychology) would coin as the will to power ("der Wille zur Macht") and how it expresses and corrupts individuals, as a omnipresent human phenomenon. To give a view examples: the guards use their power (to use violence or even friendliness) to oppress, Harley uses here connection and manipulation to get access to Arthur, for her own selfish reasons and Arthur uses Joker (here: a powerful agent) to overcome it all (past, present, guilt,...). I find it essential to add the term "Gewissen" (german for conscience) at this point and to elaborate how we understand it in logotherapy and why it struck Arthur, while being his Joker persona, during his questioning of Gary. I will try my best to be precise and quick in my explanation. We all have our inner monologues, stories we tell ourselfs about the world and us. Most of this selftalk or "monkey-mind" is critical, persistant and focuses on the negative and there are evolutionary reasons for that but this is not my area of expertise. In this jungle of mindactivity there lies also "Gewissenhaftes" or conscience. Here are some simple recognisible ways to identify it. Your Ego will not like what it has to say, it is loving to yourself and the world around you, humble and stays unshakeably dignified. Spiritual people might call it our connection to god and atheists might call it naked wisdom, piercing through all bullshit and vanity. In logotherapy we call it "the will to meaning" and our conscience guides us to whats most meaningful in every situation, no matter the circumstances. It is importand to add that meaning is not subjective subscription but recognised by the individual as a personal appeal, fleeting if not birthed into reality through personal agency. All this to say that Gary, who`s role needs even further analysis, broke through to Arthurs conscience("you were the only one who was nice to me at work....") and no ego, powerfantasy, anger at society, being abused himself or Joker persona could protect him from this simple truth, that his actions as Joker, past and present, were wrong, period! I see Joker as a powerful and corrupting persona that tells truth`s to justify wrongdoings. It is tempting to give in and let them have it and make your pain everyones. What keeps that at bay, what triggers remorse or guilt, what wrestles in us, even though loneliness and isolation fosters our asocial behaviour? I would say our conscience does that for us. I think Arthur recognised that unwillingly when he stated, after questioning Gary in the most undignifing way, the second time: "I said, No more questions, your Honor...!". After that he acted upon it and took responsibility in his closing statement. Broken, traumatised and humilitated but free to take the blame and bare the consequences. It is a powerful freedom that comes with responsibility. There is even more to be said and I would elaborate if needed but I leave it here with a final question. Who do you think the visitor was that wanted to see Arthur before the end?

Kyle Frame

Rewatched Gladiator in anticipation of the sequel coming soon. I’d have to make a case for Emperor Commodus to the progenitor sigma male. Did you consider that? Or was there a clear pre-9/11 vs post 9/11 vibe you were going for?

This reminds me of Francois Truffaut's assertion that there is no anti-war film. I think this is the same core idea.

THIS IS MY RESEARCH THESIS, THIS IS MY RESEARCH THESIS!!! Ugh, I feel so validated. I'm squealing, I'm fine.

SO basically this whole video is just an hour long essay to get across the sentiment of what Riley said in boondocks: "Until they make a salad taste like ribs, ima do me" Where the edge lords are basically Riley on their way to becoming more and more lost in the sauce like LaMilton

dj4Play

I'd also like to point to an early Liberal favorite, Rent, being a popular standard for coding these movies preaching to an audience that they wish would change. It's honestly not that good of a movie imo and though I agree with some decent amount of ideals being presented I look at it as this cringy fantasy with some decent singing and dancing.

I knew it all I had to do was go over to the youtube page and bitch about the billing dept, then go back to the patreon app and have it go through
