Third Eye Character Design: Nick and Making a "Good Bean" (Patreon)
Content
*Smashes into the room holding this video that was supposed to be done last month in my hand* I'M NOT LATE! I HAVE CONTENT. I'M A GOOD PATREON-HAVER.
So I may, or may not have spent more time than I'd like on this video, but regardless, here it is, another instalment of me talking a lot about character design of things in my head. This time on Nick, and this time, pre-recorded. I plan on doing more videos like this, probably going deeper into the thought process and meaning behiend some design and writing choices for them over a whole thing about each element of them.
I think I touched on everything I wanted to in the video, since I was more composed and not doing it live, before a D&D session, and worried I was boring my friends who wanted to play fantasy cowboy games. However I did want to say a thing or two to add onto some things.
Regarding the idea of trademark features, I feel like the physical features I talked about in regards to his being a good bean are enough. The light-filled eyes, the big smile, the rounded block of teeth, those are all enough to make him visually striking. There's also the fact that... you know, he's black, which is both surprisingly, and unsurprisingly a stand-out feature.
There was also a thing I cut from the final video where I mentioned a benchmark for what to avoid in this section being the generic, black/ white/ brown haired anime protagonist that has nothing special going on with them as to make them seem more relatable to the dudes it's marketed towards. However, I dropped it since it wasn't really adding anything to the discussion, and also, why would that ever be a concern? Nick is black. Not anime-light-skinned-japanese-but-also-maybe-white-I'm-not-sure-but-those-teen-perverts-certianly-ain't-black-I-tell-you-what.
It seemed like an unnecessary excuse to dog on anime for sucking so much, so it was cut. I did however save the part I cut because it had some pretty good goofs.
That's all for now. I'm about halfeway through the first draft of book two, and making some plans for maybe a Kickstarter campaign to fund illustrations for book one.
I'm bad at send offs
