I do love this episode, maomao is not only really clever, figuring out a whole conspiracy in time to save someone. But she's hard as fuckin nails she got rocked by that club or whatever it was and still had the warewithal to both Sass that guard and run in and save my boy jinshi

Dillon leeming

On a more serious note, that ending sequence is excellent the atmosphere of it something big has happened. Whatever jinshi is him carrying a servant girl in his arms like that is not something in that society anyway would be doing. Ooof it's so tense

I love this episode, that steady and very deliberate walk at the end always gets me. I think it does not matter whether the person/group that planned the assassination knows of Jinshi’s true identity or not - just as you said their aim was to kill the heir and Jinshi is that whether he is the son or the brother. I also LOVE that our narrator is unreliable, makes for interesting and engaging storytelling and it is so rare that we get that from a female protagonist in this day and age. So excited for you to continue Maomao’s journey! :)

There is 2 things MaoMao is great at; unreliable narration, and refusing to connect the dots when she thinks knowing something will get her in more trouble than knowing it would. the little headshake and "nope" she does earlier is so cute tho, but also I get her. Why would you want to know if it will only cause you more issues. It's cute but also we just want her to see it gosh darnit. And like, I think she must have some feelings for Jinshi, but "it's a shame - he's a enuch" and then she just buries everything. Like come on MaoMao! I also think some shock for Laken was also how Jinshi held MaoMao, because he held her like she meant a lot for him, and was dear to him. This is not a spoiler and neither confirmed nor denied - but maybe he have been badgering Jinshi so much because he believes Jinshi is just some high ranking official who have a fleeting interest in his daughter and he want to protect her in his own twisted way. By the constant wanting to buy her and cage her up, since he knows she will not come to him willingly. He is obviously not a good dad to her, but he also very obviously have kept tabs on her for a long long time. So seeing someone he cannot buy her from, actually caring/protecting for her - is probably a huge shock as then it is more confirmation that he will never "have" his daughter with him. That is ofc only speculation on my part tho. At this point when I was watching this alone. I just binged the rest of the season in one night, giving me 2hrs of sleep before an exam xD worth it tho. The build-up is intense, the pacing in this show is so good!

I didn't want to say anything about who handed the man the pipe back then, but we never saw Lakan with that pipe. They didn't show us who had it originally. We now only know that the court lady had it and gave it to the guard.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

We do see Lakan with that pipe in that episode prior to it being handed off but we only learn who hands it off in this episode :)

honi

Lakan only found the pipe after the explosion, it was never his. He sees it then puts it back. Also his name is pronounced la-khan

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

No, we never saw him have it. It was on the floor of in the building that had the fire when he was there but we never saw him have it. We see the court lady hanging it to guard at the end of the episode before the episode with the explosion.

Rose

The only time we see Lakan with the pipe is AFTER the warehouse fire, when he’s poking around curiously. As honi says above, he picks it up to examine it, then puts it back where he found it, which is why it’s still there for Maomao to find later. It’s genuinely not his.

Always look forward to your reactions!! I hope everyone in the comments stops trying to explain the show to you and just lets the show tell the story. You’ll get all the answers eventually. When that happens I’ll get to yap about the butterfly effect.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I'm so sure we see Lakan smoking that same pipe when he first overhears about Jinshi bringing Maomao back. I'm going to have to go and look but again - can we still just allow me to be wrong without trying to explain the story to me?

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Can we just allow me to be wrong instead of trying to explain and correct please? That's the fun of the react. I have a hearing impairment that impacts my pronunciation just to make you aware :)

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Yeah it is a tad frustrating haha! If I'm wrong then I'm wrong but people should allow the show to correct me rather than doing it WAY BEFORE anything is further explained or revealed :)

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Having gone back and watched - I must have misremembered and presumed the pipe was his because of him standing on the balcony and then the immediate scene after is someone handing it over to the guard. Either way, it's all part of the react so if I am wrong please just wait for the show to correct me which it will eventually do. It takes some of the fun out of watching the show if people jump the gun :)

This is one of my fave episodes! In the two manga adaptations, that scene of Jinshi carrying Maomao wasn't focused on, so I'm glad the anime production gave it more screen time! Though in the brief scenes shown in the manga adaptations, Jinshi was frantic while here he's kinda taking his time 😅. Still, I love how they showed how Jinshi is unashamed to carry this servant girl in front of all the officials who bowed to him (+ Lakan who's just stunned lol). And the insert song!! It's short but the lyrics is just so perfect for the scene! (You may look up Soukuu no Honoo's english translation.)

honi

I figured since it was from a previous episode you might've just missed it. I wouldn't comment anything that's a spoiler. I am aware that you are hard of hearing and thought having the pronunciation spelled out was helpful. Sorry if it wasn't.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

No it is but I may forget haha! :') I did have to go back and check because I was so sure that I had seen Lakan with the pipe. I think because we see the pipe straight after him standing on the balcony I presumed it was his haha!

Great reaction, Sophie, as always! I especially loved what you mentioned at 21:00; it truly gave me goosebumps. 🤗 ''The fact she is willing to risk everything for someone she doesn't even potentially know inside'' Maomao is such an incredible female lead. I couldn't help but praise her for being so brave and determined to save someone she didn't even realize was Jinshi. You asked, ''Who wants to harm Jinshi?'' I was expecting more of a ''Who wants to kill Jinshi?'' If Maomao hadn't been there, Jinshi would have died. We can see after the structure fell, the cracks in the ground (22:50); Jinshi would have been killed instantly. To me, that's an assassination attempt. I once thought Lakan was behind this, but if he wanted Jinshi dead or even seriously hurt, he wouldn't have helped Maomao enter the temple as you clarified. Every scene with Lakan is intense; it's wild to see him shocked for the first time. I can't quite figure him out. But based on yours comments ''This is supposed to be private; no one is supposed to know who Jinshi really is'' ''Maybe the look on his face shows concern for Maomao'' We can draw from them two interpretations about Lakan's reaction. 1️⃣Nobody should know Jinshi is of noble birth, only a select few. Him walking out like that is akin to revealing it to everyone. So, Lakan was shocked to see a potential royal heir personally carrying a lowly servant. That's something a noble would never do—it’s considered scandalous. At that moment, Lakan realized Maomao is not just a subordinate to Jinshi, but much more. 2️⃣Lakan just witnessed his unconscious daughter being carried out, bleeding from her leg. So, a look of shock seems fitting in that situation. He went to great lengths to connect with his daughter, but she wants nothing to do with him. He had to watch another man, someone in a higher position than him, literally take her away to live, work, and spend time with him. And now she got seriously hurt and nearly died trying to protect this man. All he can do is stand on the sidelines and watch it unfold. There might be a third option that came to my mind since you might still suspect Laken could be behind all this. 😅 3️⃣Laken was the one who provided all the strange cases to Jinshi for investigation. So this expression can mean "Oh no! Now I am the main suspect in an attempted murder." At this point, it's still difficult to understand who Lakan truly is. He seems to care about his daughter in his own scheming and odd way. We have an unreliable narrator—our view of him is through Maomao's perspective, and she has very strong feelings about him. Lakan not bowing indicates he holds a very high rank (military), if not the highest. 😬🗡️ I really wouldn't want to be the hot-headed guard who struck Maomao; not only does Lakan, his direct superior, want him likely dead, but sooner or later, Jinshi, a member of the imperial family, will come asking pointed questions.

This episode is my favorite so far from Season 1!!! Everything that has been developed so far connects to Maomao's determination and strong will to remain awake despite her concussion 🥴. The emotional depth displayed in the final scene without a single word spoken. Lakan's disbelief 😯, Jinshi's concern when he saw her swollen face, and the silent fury that burns in his eyes as he walks away with her in his arms 😠. This anime effectively used the medium to show that countless things can be conveyed despite the lack of dialogue. The final scene truly convinced me of the show's overall quality. The stakes were high, the music was powerful, and the emotions shown by everyone were profound. The weight of the banners was particularly impressive, and the performances of Maomao, Jinshi, and Lakan were simply cinematic. 📽️💯

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Just to clarify I did say assassination and when I say harm I am also inferring killing haha! But yes - we've the same perspective!

Mickael Landry

You do make interesting theories👍

One of my favourite things about this show is how the previous plot lines (which seemed like a one time thing) are actually connected which led to this big incident. It’s awesome to see Maomao make the connection and be so determined to save that noble without even knowing their real identity. I love her so much! The last scene with Jinshi carrying Maomao with the song playing in the background is so chilling.

Regarding Lakan, Maomao did say that Lakan has a keen sense for things. he can usually tell something is wrong without knowing who or what is involved. - (This is observation, not a spoiler) Lakan was in shock. He didn't know Maomao was going to get hurt. He let Maomao in because he knew Maomao knew something was urgent and needed to be tended to ASAP. Had he known Maomao was going to get hurt so bad, he may not have let her in.

KatoBen

This is how I define a good book. A good author is one who can lay the seeds of a story far in advance without readers picking up on those seeds. Even after season 2, there are elements the author introduced in season 1 that still have yet to have major importance on the story. It's the same reason I fell in love with Ascendance of a bookworm. The author knew how to introduce elements to her story in small doses so that when she went big, the story didn't feel like it came out of nowhere. There are too few authors that can write to this level of good story telling.

kate_master

Ahhhhhh! I've been so looking forward to your reaction to this episode and it was brilliant! Also, theories galore again - it is very interesting to see different theories than mine - keep them coming! I'd like to mention one thing that gets lost in subtitles - Maomao is always speaking really politely to Jinshi, but when he brings up the ox bezoar she forgets herself so much she starts talking to him like he's of the same status as her, which makes the whole scene even more hilarious 😆
