When it comes to who jinshi really is maomao puts all of the puzzles pieces together and then throws the whole puzzle away. She refuses to believe what she already knows 😭

What I find so rewarding is that a hint or a clue may not pay off right away - but it can pay off much later. The whole short term + long term storytelling is great. Obviously not mentioning specifics, but I am sure you could rewatch season 1 right away after finishing it, and see the seeds places at the very start that have already paid off

I love that while Maomao is super intelligent, her deductions aren't always infallible. Her background gives her a cynical outlook that means she can misread people based on her first impressions, like you mentioned with the emperor. My favourite thing to track on rewatch is how her views of Jinshi change as she learns more about him. For instance, I don't think Maomao in the first few episodes (arguably even up to being fired) would have assumed that Jinshi was sending her back to the rear palace as a way to look out for her. She initially saw him as this showy eunuch, flaunting his beauty to manipulate the people around him (which to be fair to her, he is). But now that she understands there's more to him than that and he's trying to do his best by people around him, she's able to get a more accurate read on his motives. There's so much I want to say about your theories or more fun facts about the worldbuilding and imperial Chinese court and belief systems to share, but I'm going to hold out till the end of series 1/2!

It is indeed unlikely that Lakan is behind this entire assassination plot. Why would he orchestrate Jinshi's murder only to step in and let Maomao save him? Especially since this would only bring them closer together, which Lakan dislikes because he wants to get close to her himself. We can assume now the current Heir is Jinshi, either the emperor's younger brother or his son. The distinction is significant because a new son would take precedence over a younger brother, but not over a first son. With an heir already in place, his ascension to emperor removes a major political player from the game. The entire rear palace is a battleground for nobles seeking the emperor's favor, and producing an heir essentially elevates you to empress, granting your family greater power and influence. Anyone with knowledge of Jinshi's identity might be inclined to take him out if they want the future emperor to be the son of a concubine. Apothecary Diaries or the new Game of Thrones. 👸🏻

I now see why Luomen calls Maomao a mad scientist; it makes sense that she'd have such a laugh (20:00). 👩🏻‍🔬🤪 hahahahahahaha (diabolical laughter)

I am eager to hear your fun facts; this is the kind of information that is often cool to learn. ✌

I've spent many hours falling down rabbit holes related to this show so there's a lot of random information I have sitting in my brain. I don't know that they necessarily count as spoilers but Sophie's really big on figuring things out with as little external info as possible so I'm trying to wait for the show to say everything it can on these subjects before chipping in. But you can count on me sharing paragraphs on paragraphs of information for both series finales 😂

I’m so glad you’ve gotten to the reveal

There's a special PV dropping this 22nd for the anime's 2nd anniversary and lots of us are hoping there'll be some news or sneak peeks of the next season :D When I first heard your theory about him not being a eunuch, I just couldn't wait for you to reach this episode. hahaha I guess Gaoshun was more believably a eunuch since he's older, but yes, he's not one either. And Basen (the guy who was mad earlier in this ep and was sitting beside Gaoshun) was his child. :D More fun stuff to come for the remainder of this cour! Looking forward to your reacts to them! <3

Came back from some vacations only to get rewarded with Apothecary diaries and FMAB reactions, good stuff as usual. BTW, Loulan with her different outfits and hairstyles always so gorgeous.

I thought that might be the case but wasn't sure if I misunderstood the name 🙈

Now that we are here, I can finally talk about Lishu. Clearly, he emperor sees Lishu like a daughter, or perhaps a sister. He brought her back to the rear palace to protect her, considering she was dumped into a convent at the death of the prior emperor. The real question, what family would willingly give up a young daughter knowing she would become a toy to the prior emperor?

Actually, a release date for series 3 was announced today - October 2026 for the first half and April 2027 for second half. Today's 2nd anniversary since the start of the anime hence the announcement. I'm so glad you figured it out about the pipe - I can stop shouting at my tablet about that at least. Though I did love the theory you came up with about it - it was very great while it lasted 😆 Also, if you go back to the incident with the salt and the one with the seaweed, you'll see that the official putting the salt in the jug and talking to the brother in the pub look very similar to the disguised Suirei escaping after coming back to life. Even earlier in the same episode the official that asks for the ceremonial thingy to be remade looks the same... Plots within plots... Also also, the flower language for thornapple is 'false charm', 'disguise'. Oh and when you mentioned two episodes ago that different cultures have different flower languages, I realised I forgot to say - all flower meanings I have been mentioning are the Japanese ones - I live in Japan and understand the language so I was only checking Japanese sites for them meanings, which I later translated for you.

It's fo announcement of the 3rd season and movie. I dont recommend for sophie to watch it until she finished season 2 as there are spoilers

Mei

It is, but I didn't say she should watch it next lol. I talked about it because the first thing Sophie talked about in this vid is nearly finishing this season then moving on to s2 AND THEN she said she knows s3 is in production but she doesn't know if there's a release date yet.

I really love the court politics and the mysteries in this show! It’s really interesting to follow along and see each case being unraveled by Maomao. I think Maomao continues to be in denial about Jinshi’s true identity because she wants to continue to interact with Jinshi as usual and doesn’t really want to concern herself with even more court politics?

You shouldn't feel bad or anything about thinking the pipe belonged to Lakan, virtually everyone I've seen react to this show has assumed it belonged to him.. It's probably because most of the time in media when we see a scene like that (lingering shot of Lakan, immediately followed by seeing the pipe handed over), most people will assume they are connected in some way... And quite often they are.. What I love is I reckon it was done on purpose to make us think it was the case, just to keep us guessing... Which to me just shows how good the writing and such is for this show, that they can so easily subconsciously manipulate our thoughts in that way...

Maomao sees 2 and 2 and decides it's not her job to put them together
