Fengxian does get special treatment. Instead of getting kicked out of the Verdigris House because she can no longer earn, she is given a room and is taken care of. I think I even recall seeing the madam sitting with her. I have a theory on why but I'll keep that to myself.

The first couple of times watching this episode, as a 39 year old man (well, I was 38 at the time,) I cried. This series is so brilliantly written. My perspective: We see this episode that Maomao met Lakan when she was young, so she had a chance to become his daughter, long before she could have become upset about him not being in her life. The manga did a great job showing the sequence. When they first met, Lakan was a total creep about it, and as a small child, that scarred her. LMAO. Others had to point this out to me, but a bigger part of her distaste of Lakan stems from his natural instincts. She's jealous of him, she feels he's wasting his potential by being so lazy about it, and that upsets her. Especially if it makes her feel inferior to him. How could she live with him, no matter how much he adores her. -- Regarding the old lady and Fangxien, there is zero confirmation or spoilers, but people in the community assume with high probability that the old lady could be Fangxien's mother. If we remember, Maomao said she has no mother, despite actually having a mother. Fangxien said the same thing. We could assume that this is standard speak for women who were born and raised in a brothel so as to retain the status of the brothel. -- Maomao said she wished Meimei got bought out because she's picked up on Meimei's passive hints. Meimei is clearly in love with Lakan, even though Lakan can't return the gesture. I cannot wait to start watching your reactions to season 2. Lots of really good stuff/moments coming.

First, I just want to say, your earrings are adorable! Also, "Maybe Well get a kiss from Maomao and Jinshi next season" *looks into the camera* Frog. Anyway! There are loads of jokes in the fandom, I can't wait for you to laugh at, including a House MD meme where House says, "it's never lupus" in English and then Maomao is next to him saying "well that's just conjecture" in Japanese. I remember clearly this episode specifically had my friends who I was watching with at the time, divided. One who says this redeems Lakan and the other who says it doesn't. Like any anime debate there are those who will die on their hill. I wonder which side you would agree with?

Peaches

I can't wait for you to enjoy next season, I really think you are going to like it! Just had to say, anyway back to the reaction

Dillon leeming

More recent anime has killed it with properly beautiful dance sequences. This is otherworldly and fern and stark in frieren is another one that's amazing

Your reactions are always so sweet!💕 Season 1 was such an amazing journey. I know you won't be reading comments, but I hope the good vibes reach you anyway. As for granny's relationships with Fengxian and the girls at her brothel, I think she kind of perceives all courtesans as her wards in some ways. Even if probably none of them is related by blood, they take care of each other as a family (The three princesses helped to raise Maomao, even Pairin was the one giving her milk). Found family is a main topic. Maomao sees herself as Loumen's daughter. She doesn't necessarily acknowledge Fengxian as her "mother" (and doesn't even want to deal with calling Lakan "father"), and like Fengxian said, a woman can't be a mother in the red district. But Maomao is a sweet girl, we know heer🙈💕 Her dance, her hidden message with the rose... Ofc she wished for two lovers to met again (just like she did back in episode 3 with the concubine and the soldier) >w< Like you say with Maomao, everyone here is a true unreliable narrator because they told us their pov and we need to put the pieces together. Fengxian was full of pride and won't admit falling in love, so granny probably thought Lakan impregnated her and left her (we know Lakan is smart, but his field is mainly strategic and lacks when it comes to people... but granny just sees this brilliant man dumping one of her girls, never guessing he was clueless lol). Anyway, I hope none of this comes out like an over explanation. All your talk about the series makes me engage with it again. As always, thanks for your time and amazing reactions💖💖💖 Really hyped for your theories and comments in season 2!

This anime is too much I love it so so so so so much 🩷🩷🩷🩷😭😭😭

Priscilla Gabel Ruiz

I love how Lakan doesn't see her sores, he sees her as she was.

Tobe

Because this last bit requires us to put pieces together ourselves to some extent, I love seeing how people interpret everyone's motives and I really like the conclusions you've drawn (probably because they're so close to mine 😅)

Sebas Tian

Mao Mao knew what she was doing when teasing Jinshi like that. I also love how they represent her as a cat, fits her too much.

Carmi Malig

55:16 yes she knew it was her mom who was bought out and is dancing for her. From discussions online, maomao wanted mei mei to be bought, but also gave Lakan the withered blue rose to give him clues about her mother. So it’s complicated.

🗳️When do you believe Sophie will decide to get a tattoo of Maomao? ᵐᵉᵒʷ (•˕ •マ.ᐟ 🟦After Season 1 ☑️After Season 2 🟦Unsure

Mei

How gracious Meimei was to let Lakan know about Fengxian because she cares for the both of them. 🥹 Love how you pointed out the possibility of Fengxian being granny's daughter. It's still not directly stated on the light novel yet, but the author answered a question on Peing (like Curiouscat but Japanese) that asked if granny gave birth to Fengxian with a "You're sharp". Some international fans say she may be sarcastic but Japanese fans believe they're biological families, too, so I'm personally believing the author was serious when she answered that (+ not to mention all the reasons you listed down!!). Really love how you knew Maomao was about to say something silly there. 😂 Poor Jinshi being stressed by the wound then baited like that 😂 And yes! Really love how different Maomao is with Jinshi now after knowing more about him! 💕 Btw, the title of the song while Maomao's dancing is "Omoi Saku Toki" (When Wishes Bloom) if you'd like to search for the lyrics' EN translation. ☺️ So excited for you to get on season 2! 🤭💖 (Hope you'll be able to watch S1's opening and ending vids, even with no react vids, because they're all lovely!)

Maomao has all her fingers, except for a slightly bent pinky on one side. It’s as if her fingertip has grown back. According to Maomao during her conversation with Jinshi, it does grow back to some extent...if you don’t look too closely at her hand, you might not notice that it is deformed. In a few scenes in Episodes 23 and 24, the last joint appears at a somewhat unusual angle when she bends it, curving towards her other fingers. Pictures https://imgur.com/vxXVQ99 Is this possible in real life? 🤙🏻🤔 Surprisingly, yes❗ I had no idea this could happen until I looked it up, but there are many documented instances of infants regrowing amputated fingers. This occurs only when 1) the person is still an infant (newborns have a remarkable healing ability) and 2) the fingertip is severed above the joint. In other words, only the nail part of the finger can regrow, and only in certain babies. I didn’t do enough research to explain the cause or mechanism behind this phenomenon, but I thought it was worth sharing. It really can occur. Biology is that amazing.

Thank you Mei, that's a beautiful song with lyrics that match the anime! ''When Wishes Bloom'' It inspires listeners to hold onto their hopes, stay strong during tough times, and believe in the right timing for their dreams to come true. The lyrics convey a sense of quiet strength, patience, and the beauty of dreams coming to life, key lessons in Maomao’s journey and the main themes of the series. To add to Grannys view of Lakan, the last she likely knows of Fengxians and Lakans relationship is Fengxian mutilating herself and Maomao cursing Lakan.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Interesting - I never saw MeiMei as being in love with Lakan but more keeping him company because she pities him. I saw it as a care for him solely because of her closeness to MaoMao's mum from being her attendant. Maybe it's more explicitly hinted at in the light novels because in the show it never came across that way to me. Only that there was some fondness but not love, and a knowledge that she could have a good life if Lakan bought her out but she didn’t want that because she knew there was nothing between them and she does not hate her life in the brothel so directed him to the true woman he loves. It seemed very platonic between them.

I think you had 26 episodes in your mind because of wishful thinking. I also can't get enough of this show. The fact that this show and Frieren aired at the same time was crazy. They are both by far my 2 favorite animes that I have ever watched. My old top 3 or 4 are not even close to how much better these shows are to me. I hope you enjoy season 2 as much if not more. I can confirm that if you lose a tip of a finger that it will growl back weather a child or an adult. Well mostly. I had an acident at work a few years ago where i cut off the tip of my thumb through the nail. It was close to an inch at the high point. It was on an angle. The whole nailed grew back including the skin around it. I have my whole trump back, but it is a bit smaller than the other one. I think you are right about granny's connection to Fenxien. I think she is Fenxien's mother. That means she wants her grandaughter to be a courtesan.

Tobe

Listening to your thoughts at the start of the episode and I do think there's a lot that's unclear about Fengxian and the timeline. It's very plausible that she was taking customers while pregnant but only contracted syphilis after Maomao was born? Maomao likely was already born when Luomen visited the verdigris house for the first time (because I think he was the one who opened Fengxian's letter before Lakan came home), but they didn't trust him at that point to tell him about her illness. Can't remember what episode it is where Maomao mentions that the illness seemed to disappear for a while before coming back in full force and spreading sores all over her body. But there's also the flashback to the moment Fengxian cuts Maomao's finger off when Maomao had to have been less than a year old, and Fengxian had sores then so the timeline is a bit odd. This could be Maomao misremembering and projecting the image she has of Fengxian now into that moment or it could be something else that isn't clear just yet.

Tobe

Your theory about Granny being Fengxian's mother is a popular one in the fandom (for good reason), but my personal headcanon for why she looks after Fengxian is that she knew Fengxian's mother. And maybe Fengxian's mother was thrown out after ending up in a similar situation as her daughter and Granny wanted to prevent history from repeating itself? While Maomao talks a lot about courtesans being thrown out if they're "useless", Granny doesn't seem to me like a character who would to that to Fengxian or any of the three princesses if she believed they'd been taken advantage of.

Anthony Willetts

I'm pretty certain that Maomao's memory of the knife incident is slightly wrong, as when you think about it compared to other things we know there is one pretty big contradiction..... We know that she already had syphilis when Luomen first came to the brothel, but because it was in incubation and noone trusted him back then, he had no idea about it... A little while after that the sores appeared and spread all over.. Maomao does say that her dad could potentially have helped if he had known sooner, but now all he could do is provide medicine to try and help ease her pain (I assume)... Now when we see Maomao's memory of the knife incident he mum already has the sores and such... So either she had them back then and they went away temporarily before Luomen arrived or it's a mistake in Maomao's memory... As for why the old lady even kept Fengxian around in the first place, especially after she couldn't work, I know a couple other comments have said it already but a pretty popular fan theory is the old woman is actually Fengxian's mum (and Maomao's grandmother).... But as was said by Fengxian to Lakan once "I have no mother, a woman did give birth to me, but in the pleasure district a woman can't be a mother" (or something along those lines)... We also get a similar statement from Maomao in one of the episodes.... So I think she did it to look after her... While also hiding her existence from everyone outside the brothel... Edit: another reason I believe she contracted it after Maomao's birth is that Fengxian back then was comparable to the 3 princesses they have now.... She entertained her patrons with her games and such, without sleeping with them... After she got pregnant and she decided to keep the baby, they probably kept her hidden away until after Maomao was born.... Her being out of the public eye for 6-9 months (minimum) probably was part of why she was the forced to start sleeping with her patrons, as her trust fell, she had also most certainly caused the brothel to get much less money over those months...

This is just a theory - it’s not proven right or wrong in the future, so it’s not a spoiler by any means. A lot of readers speculate that Fengxian was the Granny’s (lady of Verdigris) daughter, and hence she was even allowed to stay there even after she became ill and lost her mind. Again just a theory, hasn’t been proven either way. Which could then be the reason she was allowed to go through with the pregnancy before serving clients. Another reason could also be that she was convinced in the 6 months to a year that Lakan would come back, and may have put a hold on servicing clients by convincing the Granny that he will pay for her upon her return and buy her out. Again just theories. I never really thought too deep into this before, so thank you for bringing it up and discussing it. I often just see things as plot armour and move on 😅 But the way the story is written with so much thought into every action of every character, there definitely has to be more to it.

Kita

A little more theorizing for the timeline, as I am also very curious now of how things could’ve panned out. So we know Lakan was sent abroad, I believe 3 months after they slept together, and gone for three years, and it was at the time when Loumen was banished. Now he told Fengxian he would be back in about 6 months, which equals 9 months, when she would’ve given birth to Maomao. He didn’t return though, so Fengxian had to start selling herself, and contracted Syphilis. Now let’s imagine Loumen went around a little before making his way to the brothel - probably getting his bearings after being banished. It could’ve taken him about a year to get there and at this time Maomao is 6 months old and Fengxian has already contracted syphilis. We know how smart Loumen is and he can deduce a whole lot more than Maomao with little information. There were probably rumours around that area about Fengxian and Maomao and Loumen probably put two and two together that that is Lakan’s daughter. He visits the brothel but no one trusts him yet. My guess is that when Maomao was about a year old to 18 months is when the syphilis symptoms started to show and that’s when Fengxian cut both their fingers to send to Lakan. After that the Granny probably surmised that it’s not a good idea to keep Maomao at the brothel for her safety and asked Loumen to take her in. Lakan returned when Maomao was about 2 and a half years old, but it probably took him a few months after grieving to find out about Maomao, so probably when she was close to 3 years and had already bonded with Loumen as her father. This is what I think the timeline maybe went as…..let me know your thoughts :)

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Possibly! I can see multiple versions of how it could work but I think the reason why it's so unclear is just an aspect of the story because we're hearing the narrative through multiple people's perspective so we'll never fully know the truth - so we speak on conjecture ;) as Loumen says haha! I think we can all make presumptions as to how it went down but the only person that fully knows would be MaoMao's mum and she's in no position to tell her story :( The pieces we get are from everyone's perspective on what happened so it contradicts at times and seems inconsistent but it's just a really great way of showing how unreliable the narrative can be!

I hope you get to read the first 4 light novels! Would love a video on your thoughts of the books as well once you get a chance to read them! Super excited to continue watching your reactions to season 2 and then uber excited for the announcement for Season 3! I honestly thought we would have to wait at least 2 years, therefore since my expectations were low, the release date didn’t seem so far off for me as it has been for many who expected a similar distance from season 1 to 2 (which was less than a year). I tend to keep my expectations low hahaha. There’s an anime called Hell’s Paradise that was released in summer of 2023, and the second season is releasing January 2026 - so I am used to waiting so long between seasons that Apothecary Diaries season releases have been a god send. They are feeding us so good with this show! And the movie, which I thought was still called apothecary diaries but I am hearing it’s not about the cast we are used to….I hope maybe if it is still called Apothecary Diaries it could be a story about Loumen! That would be so cool! I will also look forward to your reactions to Frieren Season 2 - January is going to be sooooo good!

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I definitely intend to grab the Light Novels after I've finished S2 just to at least give me my fix as we wait for S3!! AHHH I am so excited for Frieren S2!!

sparky

It was great rewatching the series with you. You're very insightful and perceptive and I can tell you were very invested in the story. Just a friendly warning, if you're crying like this in season 1, make sure you have a paper bag you can breathe into for season 2! 😂😂

DrSophieDarlingReacts

OH NO!! I can't wait - just watched 2 x 1 and I am DYING at how cute the kitten is!!

Morisith

I love how MaoMao's mother is very clearly quite ill. But in Lakan's eyes she is still the most beautifull woman that is, all her blemishes goes away. And I don't think that is because he can't see them, I just think he is /that/ in love. And yeah, I also bawled my eyes out in this episode. Lakan really tricked a lot of people to think he was a horrible manipulative person. But he just carried a great ammount of guilt, thinking he had been the reason the woman he loved had died.

Mickael Landry

🗣️''In some regards, she is grateful to them for Luomen but she's never going to see them as her parents.'' This is an important point you raise, Sophie! The relationships in this story are very intricate and engaging. The recent discoveries about Maomao's parents were well-written, illuminating her emotional state. Maomao's lack of concern for Lakan and her biological parents comes from her realization that, no matter what, they are strangers to her. She doesn't hold them responsible; rather, she understands that they are emotionally detached from her because of their past errors, which have added to her mental challenges. She has made an effort to reunite her parents, but she acknowledges that they will never truly be her parents, and she is totally fine with that's reality. She makes an effort to remain emotionally detached and view it from a far-off perspective ("that woman," "the woman who birthed me," "that man,", ''he is a stud-horse at best'', ect.). She has a very special and deep bond with Luomen, considering him her only true parent from whom she get a sense of protection or guidance. This understanding emphasizes how skewed Maomao's view of love is. Her biological father has been passive and emotionally unavailable, while her biological mother, in her anguish, severed her own finger and blamed Maomao for her supposed shortcomings, especially concerning Lakan. Growing up in a brothel, Maomao witnessed how love was frequently shallow and transactional, which further influenced her belief that love lacks real emotion.

Little Lala

I can't wait to see you react to season 2 🥰. I personally love both seasons, but I like season 2 slightly better

WondrousMay

I think Maomao said she would rather dance to send off Meimei instead of her mom but she still danced anyway. Maomao really is an unreliable narrator and her words don’t match her actions. I’m glad to hear that this show has become one of your favourites! It was a lot of fun rewatching this show again! Your reactions/discussions enhanced my enjoyment of this show! I can guarantee you that S2 gets better and better! I know you have a lot of shows on your to-watch list but I would like to recommend The Twelve Kingdoms. It’s an epic fantasy/isekai show with an amazing cast of characters and a very detailed world-building/court politics. Youko Nakajima, the protagonist, is one of my favourite characters. I think you would enjoy it a lot since it has similarities with The Apothecary Diaries!
