Sorry for all the pausing my brain was working overtime! Also ignore my "SEE" about them changing the dialogue from Consort to Concubine - it just frustrates me that they aren't consistent with how they title the four high-ranking. It switches back and forth.

"The Colossal, Annie, and Reiner" cracked me up but also, BERTHOLDT DESERVES BETTER THAN THAT! D:

Yea the light novels are the original source material so I'd go with those. There are two manga's actually, one Japanese and one South Korean? I think? I can't remember but both of them aren't even through season 2 yet and if future seasons of the anime keep the same format as the first 2 seasons there's 8 seasons worth of light novels so far.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Yeah I've no interest in the Manga's for The Apothecary Diaries :') If the Manga's were the source material then absolutely but I'm really excited to reading the LN's!! Just going to be hard to stop myself reading on haha!

Sophie is so big brain in her analysis, not saying any of them are right or wrong, but your conjectures could be a story of their own and it would be wonderful as well, have you ever thought of writing your own stories? There's another reactor that I'm quite fond of that started his own web novel after starting his reactions

DrSophieDarlingReacts

StoriesWithStyle?! Only person I know that is writing a web novel and is a reactor. Great guy!! I honestly am not that creative with writing haha! I'm good at highlighting symbolism and themes because of pattern recognition from all the books I've read and wrote essays on but not so much writing a book myself which is a talent I marvel! Fun Sophie Lore: My bachelor's degree is in English and Creative Writing as my initial dream was to write scripts for video games! It was only when I began to learn how to analyse and engage with literature through my Introduction to Literary Theory class that I realised that I was much better at analysing and I enjoyed it more too! After that all my classes I picked were focused on writing essays and discussing the texts themes, symbolism etc in relation to a specific area we wanted to argue like psychology or marxism or feminism etc! I did very little Creative Writing modules after that discovery!

I don't know why but my reply got redirect to the comment below xD but yes, it's him, great guy! I got you and thankfully you find it so interesting that we get to have these reactions 💕

For eunuchs there’s a book called the last eunuch in China. He takes about how eunuchs weren’t sexless and often engaged in romantic relationships. So many eunuchs got married after becoming eunuchs especially to older women/maids. They would also adopt their wives children or other family members kids. Like how Luoman adopted Mao Mao and Lakan.

18:19 Unless I'm remembering incorrectly, Gaoshun told Maomao during her and Jinshi's table conversation at the end of season one, right after Maomao explained her distaste of Lakan. I believe Gaoshun's tale is made up based on events that actually happened. Remember that at the beginning of the episode, we see one of the envoys having a private conversation with the emperor. Gaoshun is likely trying to hide the fact that one of the envoys snuck away from their supervision and managed to secretly meet up with the emperor. If this got out, it would make a mockery of the royal guard. He's prodding Maomao hoping to see if she could solve how the envoy snuck away. I'm loving your personal perspective and analysis of the episodes. You are discussing things I never even considered. Obviously, I cannot confirm or deny anything you said, but it just reminds me how brilliant the author is. I really need to pick up reading where I left off again.

Looks like Sophie is cooking and I like the smell of it

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Oh I'm aware but it's just sprung out of nowhere that people learned he was married 😂 with no further context. It's also not beyond the realm of possibility of him being a late eunuch like Luoman and the Quack Doctor. We obviously know he's not a eunuch but the rest of the rear palace don't. It's left to our own interpretation.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Hm perhaps. I think the lack of resemblance between the two girls and the envoys is what threw me off. But it would make sense for details to not be identical to prevent Maomao catching on such as changing cousins to sisters. Though I will say if this is the case please refrain from revealing what the show has not yet told me 🙈 I haven't watched beyond this episode so if it's a reveal that's going to be mentioned then best to hold back! If it's never brought up again then it's fine to mention a theory on etc. I hope that makes sense. I just don't want anything being confirmed or explained or proposed as a theory if the show is going to delve into it further in an upcoming episode. Also I wasn't referring to Maomao knowing but others being aware that he's married - it was so random haha!! ❤️

KatoBen

My apologies, I didn't think I revealed anything. I am deeply sorry if I said something leading. I really like when an author excels at writing to a degree that makes people speculate and trying to break down what's going on. I love talking about the show and about the author. I get a little too excited some times, but I try to talk about the thoughts I had back when I first watched each episode.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

No no don't worry haha!! If it's never brought up again then it's perfectly fine and knowing The Apothecary Diaries it likely won't be further explained 🙈😂

Ryuuji Gremory

Just one thing to point out the guy meeting with the envoy at the start has grey hair and is wearing plain black garments, the emperor has black hair and is usually wearing ornate garments. If he didn't age rapidly between seasons and had a change in his tastes in clothes I would argue that isn't the emperor.

KatoBen

I guess that's where the problem arrived, I had always assumed it was the emperor on screen. I never really noticed.

WondrousMay

You’re on fire with these theories!!! I know I keep saying this but I love how you noticed the themes, symbolisms and narrative connections of the story. It’s just really fun to see someone really appreciate the story and the characters! Keep up the good work!!! I also hope you’ll enjoy AoT manga! It’s a different experience from the anime but in the good way!

If you get into Manga's I have so many to recommend lol. My two main ones are "Sanctuary" which is about Politics in Japan in I think the 80's? It is basically about how the Yakuza got more "corporate" and how politics had become disconnected from the younger generations and people had lost interests and there was no passion for change. so the "fat cats" (aka old and corrupt) got more and more power while the ones who wanted to work for the people lacked the support they needed from the voter base. It is incredibly "fun" to read and follow, even if it's a heavy subject. The other one is "Lone wolf and cub" that follow an assassin with a small child who try to restore his family's honour after someone wrongfully accused them for their own gains. Set in old Japan, just about when guns where introduced - I am a bit hazy on the years but I am sure you know the period. It's a bit gritty, and there is a ton of death, but masterfully illustrated and the challenges the father have to scale, and how he solves them are very interesting. Like it's not just straight forward. And you meet so many interesting characters in it too. Both of those are more longform, I also know a ton of shorter ones that a quick to read. Like you mentioned Death note. The worst is when the author goes on a hiatus and never picks it back up. So always check if a series is complete or not before picking it up. I have one where I read 90% of it, but the final climactic fight/conflict have been on hiatus for 10+ years now. Since Manga writes have to release a chapter a week, they some times manage to write themselves into a corner for the long running series'. But for shorter ones (less than 3 seasons usually), it is good most of the time

I know you said to ignore the consort vs concubine thing but I just wanted to say I believe the consort name is just their official title? But they are still technically concubines? Or it could be Maomao (and maybe others?) just don't call them consorts unless talking about their official roles in the rear palace? I could be totally wrong though, so if I am feel free to ignore me haha...

DrSophieDarlingReacts

The subtitles bounce back and forth but I've noticed the Light Novels also does the same! All the women in the rear palace are 'consorts' regardless of rank but they are mid-consorts and then sometimes it switches to concubines haha! It throws me off a little :')

Anthony Willetts

Ah I see, I must not have noticed the changes as much, or just thought they were using an official title or something like that...

Tobe

I can't wait until you react to the apothecary diaries openings. I think you're really going to enjoy dissecting them
