Something just clicked in my head! If this outsider (the Mother Royal) has legitimised their control through the lineage and traits passed down genetically to the point that the original people that ruled the land were erased from history thus cementing their dynasty as divine right. We know she married a local leader and it was THEIR SON that became Emperor which implies that perhaps that other clans existed, other leaders, who were conquered and forced to bend to this dynasty.Could those that are seeking to target the Emperor and Jinshi be the descendants of one of those prior clans who believe they have more claim and are seeking to tear down a dynasty they believe is not as legitimate as their own because it descends from an outsider?

Are they challenging the claim? Are they seeking to impose their own will and power? So many questions.

Obviously NO ONE answer these. They are purely rhetorical. But it does pose some further insight that if this dynasty was forged through mythologising the connection to the divinity - could others have a different interpretation passed down by their ancestors that makes them believe that they should overthrow it entirely and establish their own.

Yeah, I'm not even trying to understand the royal lineage anymore haha

At this point I just get anxious with MaoMao willingly ignorance 😂😂😂 come on girl, we all love some gossip and also I do believe that the Emperor knows that Jinshi is his Son and not his Brother because of the way he's treated him so far, that's not the way people would treat a brother who could be a menace to your own position in this historical context

An ultra light explanation on the hereditary bit of the color blindness, is that it's carried on the X chromosome AND its a recessive trait. Since men have XY cromosomes, as long as the one X they get from their mother has the gene, they will be colorblind. Women can be carriers (if its only one X with the gene) or express it (if its both), but to express it they would need a mother who carries the gene and a colorblind father. Sorry if something sounds wonky, eng isn't my first language lol

This episode just shows a father enjoying time with his son while playfully teasing him about his girlfriend. 😂 Joke aside, TAD show does a great job of turning characters you might initially dislike into ones you actually end up liking. For example, Lihua starts off with a bad attitude, but it turns out she was just struggling because her child was sick. She's indeed really intelligent, warm and caring. Then there's the Quack doctor, who at first seems like he could be an enemy to Maomao, but instead, they just chill and drink tea together because he realizes she's actually better than him, and he's totally fine with that. Later, we encountered Lakan, a character who initially evokes dislike due to his enigmatic and controlling public persona, shaped by his unfortunate history and his struggle to recognize faces. And now the emperor, it's amusing how he appears to be this super serious and scary guy, but deep down, he's really warm-hearted. He's genuinely a good person with a sense of humor, he even put a stop to the eunuch castration, and importantly thank god, he isn't interested in the minor concubine, having specific preferences for certain types of women. While the Emperor might not be as brilliant as Luomen, Lakan, and Maomao, he's definitely sharper than he seems. Plus, he has that crucial leadership quality of being able to spot talent. He is growing in me!

I couldn't help but laugh when you shouted "Baby Jinshi!" hahaha. As you clearly explained, we were introduced to the former perverted Emperor, his manipulative mother, and the current Emperor's mother who gave birth at...10 years old jeez 🤢. It was mentioned in Season 1 that the previous emperor had a preference for VERY young consorts which certainly explains the disdain in the Empress Dowager's stare and her protectiveness over little Jinshi who looked like a little girl. In the imperial family, we now learned that color blindness serves as a crucial genetic marker linked to the original Empress, primarily inherited through the female line. This trait establishes a connection between the royal bloodline and the ability to pass a color blindness test. When an Emperor fails this test, it is customary for him to seek a concubine with the genetic trait, increasing the chances of passing the test. Such concubines, often of noble descent, not only validate their suitability but also enhance their standing within the court. By supporting the Emperor and potentially becoming his favored companion, these concubines improve their odds of being chosen as the next Empress. As a result, the color blindness trait is likely to be passed down to future generations of Emperors, reinforcing the link between the imperial lineage and this unique genetic marker, which influences consort selection and the continuity of the royal bloodline.

Jinshi is currently a political powder keg. If he truly is the emperor's son and marries Maomao, it would upend the existing concubine system, as they all vie for power to bear the emperor's heir. If that happens, Jinshi could simply walk away and redefine himself in the eyes of the world. However, if it becomes known that the emperor already has an heir, Jinshi's life could be in jeopardy—especially after a recent assassination attempt—given that many know he favors Maomao. It's no wonder he's feeling so stressed, while Maomao wants to distance herself from the turmoil. 😅🙈

This is one of my favorite episodes because of the symbolism we see here. We the audience know that Jinshi is actually the true prince-heir. Besides Au-Duo, we do not know who else knows that Jinshi is the emperor's son. The whole story about the emperor or prince-heir being allowed to bring a concubine to choose for him is the author continuing to play with us. Maomao came as Jinshi's "concubine," not the emperor's. Maomao solved the puzzle and therefore reinforces the hidden message that Jinshi is the rightful heir to the throne as the current emperor's oldest (and only) son. It gives me goosebumps every time the author plays with us like this.

This was such a good episode that provided really interesting world building and insight into the current royal family’s lineage. The first scene with young Jinshi and the previous Emperor always gave me the chills… really glad to hear your thoughts on the scene too. And yeah, Maomao really is deep in denial about Jinshi’s identity. I think the Emperor is aware of Jinshi’s feelings for her too so that’s why he brought her along.

I also like how the Emperor casually gives Jinshi his blessing to be with Maomao.👍🏼 I hope to see Ah Duo again so we can find out what the mother thinks about their relationship; I don't think she was aware of it the last time she was there.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Oh no she was aware. The only reason she felt comfortable leaving was after meeting Maomao 👀 She knew her son was in good hands with her around. She also went back to Jinshi after drinking with Maomao and told him to leave. In that moment she was happy to let him go because she knew her son would be protected and that Maomao would be good for him ❤️

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I don't think we know the age that she gave birth? It's never been specified only that she was young. Please be careful with accidental spoilers if you've watched ahead or had it confirmed via the LN 🙈

The emperor really won't negotiate when it comes to the bewbs.

This is one of my favorite episodes. The way Jinshi said, “I know.” So many things left unspoken in this episode, and yet so clear no words are needed. Love love love this episode, glad you enjoyed it too 🧡

I think this episode also sheds light on Jinshi crying about Ah Duo leaving in season 1. If he spent enough time around the emperor and her to have thought of them as parents as a child. We know that he's 19 and that the current emperor came to power 5 years ago, and that Ah Duo was the only woman in his life for that whole time. Jinshi would be 14 before his dad became emperor, and could have spent huge amounts of time with his dad and mom acting as his dad and mom, before politics forced them all to act differently...
