TW - Sexual Assault / Abuse & Grooming

This was a difficult episode for me on a personal level. I feel a lot of empathy for Anshi and I want to preface why that is before anyone jumps down my throat. What she did was horrendous and absolutely NOT OKAY as I stressed multiple times in the episode but I can empathise with the anger and hurt and need to lash out against your abuser in the only way you can.For those of you that have been around for a while - you will likely remember me having to take a personal break in April. I was unfortunately the victim of grooming and sexual abuse in my teenage years by an older man. I never received justice for that and in April the police showed up at my door after 15 years to discuss the matter further in relation to finding inappropriate content of me as a minor that had been found on a dark web website and how I wanted to proceed.

It took a hit on my mental health and brought up a lot of feelings that I had buried along with this idea that I was not really a victim and that I knew what I was getting myself into. However, I was a child and I could not consent, but it's why I can relate to Anshi and her perspective of herself because it's something I also thought and it is part of the trauma response. I must stress that Anshi's actions can never be justified especially when it pushed the Emperor into a rapid state of mental decline and caused him to shut himself away entirely. The Emperor is both a victimiser and a victim. Anshi is too.

But I feel strongly for her because I also get it. I understand that desire to hurt the person who hurt you through weaponizing a vulnerability e.g. Anshi weaponizing the Emperor's fear of older women.

After watching this episode - I have looked at other reactors in relation to this episode and some of their responses towards Anshi are actually horrendous. Simplifying it down to her 'obsession' with getting older and the Emperor no longer paying attention to her as to why she did what she did, that she was jealous and bitter whilst brushing off the grooming and manipulation she underwent, the trauma of giving birth to a child when she was a child herself, and having to confront the fact that the man who did this to you is continuing to do it to other girls.

Was what she did right? No. Can I empathise with her desire to hurt someone? Absolutely.

It's horrific to me that people can watch an entire backstory and still miss the point entirely or write off the Emperor as somehow justified in his behaviour towards young girls because 'he's not well' or 'traumatised' whilst blaming Anshi in the same breath. As I've said before - you can acknowledge a person's trauma whilst holding them accountable which I did with Anshi and the Emperor.

It's telling that she sees the other girls as victims but not herself.

I know some people may judge me for sharing this personal aspect of my life BUT I am not ashamed of it. It made me a stronger and kinder person. Someone that fights against injustice and uses my voice to defend others. It is also relevant to the topic manner and offers further perspective as to my commentary.

Oh sweetie I'm so sorry you had to go through it, you are not to blame nor any girl is to blame about being abused much less a child (whether the child is a boy or a girl) and as you said we are completely capable of empathizing with the victims feelings and how they lash out because of that and it does not make it right but it makes it understandable. I sure hope you can achieve peace of mind and that this person can be brought to justice. Wishing you well ❤️

Thank you so much Pedro. I've had quite intense therapy since April as well as being back on anti-depressants so I am very much healing. Part of the process is in recognising that the only person that should be ashamed is my abuser - not me which is why I shared my story here and its connection to Anshi because Patreon is a safe place for me to do so without judgement ❤️

*some information mentioned in the light novel and twitter posts by the author* Yeah it's a horrible cycle of abuse that stemmed from the death of his older brothers. All of the higher ranked concubines saw him as a target. The new emperor is young and they jumped at the chance to be the next empress, and as a lower ranked concubine his mom couldn't really help him (That's probably why Maomao said the Empess was attempting to gather power to protect him). His mother's coddling definitely didn't help. Nobody told that man that what he was doing was wrong, they inabled his sick behavior by sending as many small children to him as possible instead of helping him get over his fear of older women. Doesn't excuse anything tho. I feel bad for the child he was, not the adult he turned out to be. There's also some similarities that Jinshi had had to deal with. I think light novel goes into more depth about Jinshi's struggles with having women jump at him (even needing Gaoshun to protect him from a man who literally dragged him into some bushes). It really makes you appreciate how well he's adapted to his looks and why he only sees them as a tool. Also poor Anshi, coping with what happened to her by asserting herself as an "ambitious child". Ambitions that were drilled into her by her sicko of a father who only saw her as a tool to gain political power.

(I've written so much today, and deleted so much.) I believe the empress advising Jinshi to hide Maomao is her secretly trying to tell him to make Maomao his before someone else makes their move before him. In other words, she approves of their relationship, if it ever goes that far. Maomao is very intelligent, has excellent manners and etiquette, and is the daughter of a high ranking noble, she (IMHO) sees Maomao as a good marriage candidate for her son. And honestly, I have zero clue if she does or does not know if Jinishi is not her real son. The way she talks about child of immorality, swapping babies could be seen as an act of immorality, IDK. - I also want to apologize. I've mentioned before that I'm not very good at socializing, and sometimes I miss things being said or interpreted. I realize that sometimes I say things that come off as rude, and I feel very regretful when I feel like I've wronged someone. Last episode, I made some comments that was repeating what was said without realizing it was said, and that made me feel awful.

First and foremost, although I'm not very good with words, I want to offer you my sincere empathy, not pity, because the victims did nothing wrong. Honestly, I can't fully express the feelings I have after hearing what you're going through, and I prefer not to express them explicitly as a sign of respect. There's no justification for it. And it's perfectly valid to have strong feelings toward those who committed such acts. I sincerely wish you all the best for the future. As a secondary, and less important, comment, I'd like to acknowledge the work the show did in addressing such a complex topic, as it's not something you see often, much less explored in such depth.

Thank you for this beautiful reaction. It is true that after this episode there were reactors who completely lost my respect, but fortunately there are still people like you who managed to understand the whole situation and express themselves with empathy, without actually justifying anyone, not even Anshi in the end. I remember watching a couple reacting and when Anshi had the emperor cornered they just kept saying "Do it, girl, go on" as if they were celebrating a victory, when even in that moment she was still broken inside. The last thing going through her mind was a feeling of triumph. I haven't been following you for long. In fact I barely watch your YouTube channel, I've mostly been watching you on Patreon for a short while now. It makes me very sad to know what you have gone through, but I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your opinion here because it gives so much weight and depth to this reaction. And really, don't worry. No one is going to judge you for your opinion, at least no one with a minimum of literary understanding. The vast majority of the fandom outside the reaction bubble shares your feelings and your general opinion on this arc. I think I can mention this because it doesn't really appear in other material, it just came directly from a comment by the author. The previous emperor was indeed abused as a child by other concubines, both because he was too beautiful and because they wanted to climb the ranks. His mother had no power to stop it and that is why when she came to power she became so extreme and overprotective. None of this justifies anyone, not the Empress Regnant, not the previous emperor, and not Anshi in the end. But it does allow us to understand why things happened. And that is precisely why I am in love with this work, because it doesn't try to minimize the victim or redeem the villain. It doesn't justify, it simply exposes things as they were. It isn't black and white, it is an uncomfortable, complex, very human gray. If a work is going to touch on such sensitive topics as these, I appreciate that it does it well and dares to show reality. If it isn't capable of doing it with this honesty then it's better not to even try.

The defining phrase for this episode is "hurt people hurt people".

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Omg no please don't feel that way!! Your comments have always come across as someone engaging with the show and is passionate rather than rude or over-correcting!!

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

I think that the pedophile Emporer was abused by his mom and that's why he is afraid of women. It was either physical, emotional, sexual or maybe all of the above. It may be the reason he can only talk to young girls. No excuse for being a pedophile though.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

They showed us in his dream a couple of episodes ago that he picked up the stone after the Emporer dropped it. Though that was just a dream.

If Suirei is the daughter of the cast out "illegitimate" daughter of the previous emperor that would make her the current emperor's niece and Jinshi's cousin (if you believe Jinshi is the current crown prince). I also love the detail of how Anshi's speaking voice seems purposefully high and almost girl like, but her internal monologue voice is that of than adult woman.

Firstly, thank you for sharing such a personal aspect of your life with us. I’m sorry that you had to go through something horrible like that and I’m glad you’re healing. Sending you all the hugs 🫂♥️ Secondly, thank you for showing understanding and empathy for Anshi. I haven’t watched other reactions but I have read comments about her that made me angry because of the lack of understanding for this entire situation. It’s not as black and white as people made it out to be and it’s refreshing to see you express your thoughts in such an eloquent way. It breaks my heart that Anshi doesn’t see herself as a victim but described herself as an ambitious girl. I know I should be used to your good memory by now but I’m still pleasantly surprised you remembered Suirei’s background. You’re amazing!

Molly

Really thoughtful conversation and some fun theorising in this one. I also want to thank you for sharing your story. It's unfortunately not uncommon so the more people who are willing and able to speak out about their own experiences without shame the easier it becomes for others as well. It brought a lot of nuance and empathy to this reaction, but more importantly I truly believe sharing your experience helps effect real change in the world. You are wonderful.

Mooch

Thank you for sharing your story, Sophie. A lot of us have been there too, and it's so easy to feel like we're alone. I'm truly sorry you had to go through that. I really appreciated your insights on both self blame and and victim blaming, it's not talked about enough. I think this series does a fantastic job of addressing these sensitive topics without sensationalizing them. It's handled as just a matter of fact, and a harsh reality. But we also see characters overcome and learn to cope with these struggles throughout. I've found it really validating and healing, personally! Another great video, keep it up! ❤️

Shouto

Thank you for sharing your story- it takes such immense courage and bravery to speak openly about past traumas and horrific events, especially regarding sexual assault and abuse. I’m going to share a comment I made on another reactor’s video regarding this episode (and don’t worry it’s not a spoiler) but I believe the author confirmed that the reason why the late emperor had such a preference for little girls is because he was made emperor as a child after all his older brothers died, and an emperor’s number one duty is to produce as many heirs as fast as possible. Basically, he was severely sexually abused and traumatized by older and mature court ladies as a child in order to start trying to produce heirs, and it horrendously backfired in that he developed a phobia for adult women (why he freaked out when Anshi’s older sister touched him) and only saw safety in young girls (Anshi approaching him and asking if he was okay). It’s absolutely not an excuse for the horrible things he did to so many children, but it is an explanation and an example as to how abuse, specifically sexual abuse in this case, can lead to generational trauma and further pain, as seen in Anshi’s case where she tormented and raped the Emperor once he essentially threw her away. I remember reading this scene for the first time and just feeling downright awful and horrified, which shows how amazing the writing of Apothecary Diaries is to not only depict such dark subjects but to also show how abuse affects those involved, both as victims and perpetrators, and how despite it all there is kindness and beauty in the world- Jinshi looking so much like the late emperor should and most likely does pain Anshi, yet she still loves him dearly despite everything she went through and subsequently did. I also firmly believe that after Anshi did what she did, she resolved to ensure that her children would never be hurt or treated in the same way that both she and previous Emperor were by working to improve life in the palace for everyone as much as she could as the Empress Dowager. She raised her first son to be a noble man who would fit well as the future Emperor while maintaining his kindness (and humanity- not like the puppet the previous Emperor was known as), and I feel like the current Emperor honours her efforts by pushing for change within the palace- you can’t tell me that the Emperor wouldn’t immediately jump in at the chance to make Maomao an official doctor or palace physician if he could but sadly noble politics and societal norms for the time period still restrict him in what he can do. Apologies for the rambling and thank you for the amazing reaction as always. It’s always a pleasure to watch how you resonate with stories and how closely you pay attention to detail, you even catch little things that a lot of other reactors never noticed which is really cool. You ooze passion and it’s amazing to see (plus I love listening to all your theories and predictions). I can’t wait to see what you think of future arcs for this season as I find season 2 to be even better than season 1 in my opinion

Your perspective not only sheds light on the struggles of those who have experienced similar situations but also emphasizes the importance of empathy in discussions about accountability and justice. It’s really commendable that you use your voice and platform to advocate for others and fight against injustice! As many folks said here, It takes a lot of courage to discuss such sensitive topics, especially when they relate to your own trauma. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts and personal experiences so openly. May I give you a big hug? 👐

''I feel bad for the child he was, not the adult he turned out to be.'' That's such a powerful sentence that we can use actually in many dramatic TV shows.

Mickael Landry

I couldn't agree with you more, 100% right! It’s really upsetting to see people celebrating harmful actions without understanding the emotional struggles that come with them. Your point about the gap between the audience's excitement (on YouTube) and Anshi's inner conflict really shows an important part of trauma stories: the complicated feelings that often get ignored for the sake of drama. Celebrating a moment that seems empowering without recognizing the pain and suffering that brought it about can lessen the seriousness of the situation. It’s important to look at these stories with compassion and understanding, knowing that acts of aggression or revenge usually come from deep emotional wounds rather than victory. It’s crucial to encourage conversations that not only hold people responsible for what they do but also dig into the reasons behind those actions as Sophie brilliantly did in her reaction. This can create a more understanding dialogue and, in the end, help everyone involved find healing and justice.

Mickael Landry

You make a pertinent point that I hadn't considered before. 😁 The emperor's role, although powerful, is indeed limited by the social norms and political situations of his time, which makes it harder for him to implement real changes. The thought that he would back Maomao as an official doctor or palace physician shows that he values talent and ability, no matter a person's gender or social class. This could represent a huge change in the story, where the Emperor not only sees the unfair treatment of women like Anshi but also takes steps to break down the obstacles that stop them from reaching their full potential. 🤴👍👩‍🔬👩‍⚕️ It would be really cool to see how the anime would unfold in this way.

Kita

He absorbed the arsenic probably while making the paint - you would have to crush the stone into powder, which was a practice used by many past artists as readily made paint wasn’t available then. He probably kept inhaling the powder and that’s how it entered his system. Even today there are many paints that can be toxic to us, as well as dried clay dust (used in pottery) can be harmful. Not sure if you deduced all this later in the video but I wanted to say before i forget 😅
