I love that Leif finds the commonality he shares with Thorfinn: we're both warriors in our own way. And he did it by connecting them back to Thorfinn's youth and stories by the fire because that's how he remembers and relates to Thorfinn. T_T I can't wait for you to watch the last episode! I personally bawled throughout. ^^;

5 mins in. Dr Sophie, I must say this, your compassion for Thorfinn is unmatched and I am absolutely here for it. You put it all so eloquently in words in just the first five minutes of this video.

Now that I have watched whole video. I am excited for your reaction to Ep 24, which I suppose will drop next year. We are going to have Frieren reactions along with Vinland season 2, oh boy, next few months are going to be amaahhzinggg.

The thumbnail scene is such a powerful visual moment in the anime adaptation of Vinland Saga that symbolizes the characters' different paths and states of mind. So well executed, I adore it and it seems you too! 🤗 You eloquently described the use of lighting contrast. Leif Erikson, the explorer who dreams of a peaceful Vinland, is often depicted in well-lit areas, symbolizing his hope, positive outlook, and connection to a better future. He represents Thorfinn's former life and the innocence that was lost. Thorfinn, at this point in the story, is consumed by revenge, rage, and a cycle of violence following his father's death. He is often shown in shadows, dimly lit streets, or confined spaces, representing his inner darkness, anger, and moral turmoil. This visual storytelling reinforces the narrative themes of the show, highlighting the vast distance—both physical and emotional—between the old man searching for paradise and the young warrior lost in the hell of war. You add then the OST to the scene and BOUM: "Absolute cinema!" 🎬 I usually don't cry easily, but this scene moved me. 🧻🥲

At this point of the story, Thorfinn is so self absorbed that there would be no point in any kind of pleading from Leif. Any appeal to sympathy is sure to fall flat under the weight and urgency of his trauma. So, Leif instead opts for what I believe is the only approach that even has the possibility of working, and that is shocking Thorfinn out of his self absorbed state. Leif talked about himself, and his own honor. He found a common point of empathy by using the story of him stranded on the ice, and used it as a vehicle to talk about his promise to Thors. He's not making the same mistake as he made 2 episodes ago - He's not saying "you care about these people," but instead he says "there are people who care about you." At this point, Thorfinn starts lashing out again, but this only proves the efficacy of the approach. He got pushed out of his apathy, and started emoting again in the only way he knows how; anger. To save the tale of Vinland for this point, where Thorfinn would be sure to actually listen to it, just shows how smart Leif is and how well he still knows the little boy from the village. In 1x21 I remarked on how Leif would have surely replayed the reunion time and time again, yet nothing worked out how he wanted it to. This time, he had an entire day, if not more, to really think through how he wanted to approach Thorfinn. And witnessing the scene of him quite literally stepping into the light, it seems to have worked a treat. One final thing I wanted to remark on, is once again the clever interaction between the A and B plot. For example, how Askeladd explains his background with Wales to Thorkell, right before it switches to Thorfinn saying "don't talk about home now," itself immediately proceeded by the recurring Vinland motif. It's a simple thing, but it really enhances the symbolic connection between the two characters, even more so than they already are connected. Next time is the finale to season 1! So many questions asked of the characters in this episode. How will they respond? Only one way to find out.

Thank you for the cultural insight and the intriguing information about Brian Boru, of whom I had only heard a little. As a result, I read some sections on his lengthy Wikipedia page, his role as the King of Munster and his influence on the unification of Ireland in the 11th century are truly captivating. 🧔👑⚔️🇮🇪

Great analysis 💯. I don't know who dubs Leif, but he does a fantastic job; the voice intonations to convey emotions of joy and despair are remarkable. I get chills just hearing Leif's speeches.
