I love this ending, askeladd is another father not in terms of love obviously but influence definitely i never thought that he didn't want him dead it does make sense. Askeladds sacrifice and the speech to both of them last episode seems like him setting them both up he sees potential for both of them one as a ruler and thorfinn as a true warrior. He's a deeply confusing man monstrous in many ways but somehow kind. Now thorfinn is lost here having the only life you've ever known regardless of how destructive that life is is hard. Him running and attacking canute to me are him reverting back to what he knows, violence and chaos,he was uncomfortable with the idea of going home peace must seem like a distant dream . The dagger drop to me is a wee bit more literal in some ways, he's letting go , all the hate and rage and now what's he left with?. Anyway long ah post very sorry. Hyped for season 2

I just want to express how much of a true pleasure it has been to see your reactions to Vinland Saga. Your authenticity and in-depth analyses truly pay tribute to this series. As for me, while the first season was enjoyable and shocked me by being just the prologue of the story, the second season elevates Vinland Saga to the status of a masterpiece and a lesson in life. Actually many YouTube reactors from various generations have made this known. I recommend having a box of tissues handy, as you will need them. 🧻😄

Imo it's fine sometimes not being able to provide input or commentary Dr Sophie. We love your inputs, theorizing, predictions while watching. Your content is unique in that sense. And sometimes we come across an episode like this where all we can do is feel what story wants or intends us to feel. This is one such episode. Season 2 is where, Makoto Yukimura the author of Vinland Saga, originally intended to start this series. However his editor advised him to give Thorfinn a backstory and then start with his original story. So Yukimura writes a whole prologue arc, and arguably gives us one of the all time best anti villains, Askeladd in it. I still cannot wrap my mind around this fact, what an amazingly talented man Yukimura is. In one of interviews, Yukimura has shared that he did intend to end Askeladd's role in this arc but he had not thought about how the scene would pan out. So when he was writing Askeladd's final moments, he was having peculiar experience, of Askeladd speaking dialogues himself rather than Yukimura himself writing it. Essentially, those final words of Askeladd's are his own. I just find it wonderful and at the same time fascinating how artists and writers are able to experience their own work 'come to life' as they labour over it .

God damn it, who's cutting onions in here?!

Love the shot of thorfinn standing over askeladd with the same lighting from when his dad was killed, reminds me of when thorkell told thorfinn his eyes don’t look like thors, cause really askeladd is thorfinns dad just in a messed up way😂.

I LOVE how as much as it is clear Askeladd was by all perception throwing away his life the moment he knocked away the King's arm, nonetheless the moment you see the moment when Askeladd kills the king it is always shocking. It is an incredible moment, everything leading up to it but also the way the story is told, it happens so fast that you don't even have time to process it all. I know this is pretty divorced from the analysis side of things, but I still feel that adrenaline rush whenever I watch this episode and I have to comment on it

End of the prologue indeed, and what a prologue it was! Fun fact, this episode to this day remains the highest rated tv-anime episode on IMDB. Whether that means anything substantial I'll leave up to you, but I do find it interesting. There is frankly way too much that could be said about this episode, much more than I could ever hope to convey in a simple comment. Instead, I'll share an excerpt from an interview Yukimura did when season 2 was airing. Keep in mind, in terms of manga material he would've been about halfway season 4 at that time. -------- Q: Regarding Askeladd, what was your approach to writing such a compelling character, someone who can do awful things yet who can be very charming. A: He was an unexpected outcome. The fact that he became such a fascinating character was totally the result of luck. I made Askeladd for Thorfinn. Someone who invites Thorfinn to the battlefield, and raises him in very harsh situations. I gave Askeladd the role of raising Thorfinn in the place of his dead father. So, Thorfinn learns everything from Askeladd. He even learns the definition of violence through Askeladd. That is why Askeladd is cold and brutal. The colder Askeladd is, the better. But at the same time, he is also a father. A kind father always watching over Thorfinn. So a cold, but fatherly personality. These traits have to live together. Normally, that would be impossible, but I had to so I did. And as a result, Askeladd's contradicting personality turned him into such a good character. [...] Q: Are there any scenes in Vinland Saga that stick out to you, and are very important to you? A: This scene[, where Askeladd yells "stay back Thorfinn."] I really wasn't sure how Askeladd felt about Thorfinn. Askeladd might not have cared in the slightest if Thorfinn had died anytime, anywhere. But, when he was on the verge of the end of his life, he made sure Thorfinn didn't come with him. He pushed Thorfinn away thinking he shouldn't have to die with him, and to my surprise, I hadn't thought about him like that right up until I was going to write this scene. They were Askeladd's own words, I can't think otherwise. It's a wonder, but Askeladd actually said it. It's really weird. Askeladd had actually cared about Thorfinn to an extent, and even I didn't know about it up until that scene. That was a peculiar experience, I remember it well. -------- Thorfinn has lost his second father figure in his life, and with it, the purpose to his entire existence; not to mention he's finally dropped the sword he might as well have been born with. Season 2 is gonna be absolute cinema, and I can't wait to see what you make of it. The true story starts now!

Interesting itw 👍 The scene that Yukimura referred to is indeed crucial in Vinland Saga and well done. Askeladd's instruction to Thorfinn to "stay back" unveils a complex aspect of his character that many viewers may not notice until that point. Throughout the series, Askeladd often seems harsh and self-interested, particularly in his dealings with Thorfinn, who is fueled by vengeance. Yet, in that pivotal moment, we catch a glimpse of Askeladd's deeper emotions and his wish to safeguard Thorfinn, albeit in a distorted manner. This moment underscores the intricate bond between the two characters. Askeladd's behavior implies that he acknowledges Thorfinn's potential and perhaps sees a reflection of himself in him. It marks a crucial turning point that enriches their relationship and raises questions about mentorship, legacy, and the essence of their conflict. The emotional impact of that scene could  resonate with numerous fans because it challenges our perception of Askeladd and encourages us to rethink the reasons behind his actions. It stands as a testament to the narrative craft in Vinland Saga, where characters are multi-faceted and their relationships develop in surprising ways.

I knew I could never have watched this anime alone. I only finally got to finishing S1 watching your reactions.

Rewatching the last two episode reactions of this season, god I’m in tears again. It truly was a profound journey seeing your view on Askeladd change over time. Your final thoughts on him touched me deeply.

Ugghh it took me so long to sit down and watch with you because I had to be ready to cry along! ^^; I felt a genuine sense of loss after this season because no Askeladd in season 2? Noooo! His whole arc is so well-written and the impact he's leaving on Thorfinn is enormous. I'm looking forward to watching the next season with you! ^_^

Jobbe Smit

Yeah this season does not end how you expect it halfway through the show. Luckily I can just jump into your reaction to the next season. End of the prologue, start of the true journey of Thorfinn.

Mei

This is my third time seeing this (1st my first watch, 2nd reading the manga) and I still ended up crying with you. Askeladd is one of my favorite characters of this series and this part just devastated me. Love how you already understood his intentions before Canute even mention it! I think it was great that you only ever really thought with certainty that he'd die at the start of this episode; just shows how unpredictable the story could be. :D I'm glad I marinated the reacts for this (I've been watching/listening while on the run or doing some work tasks) so I could immediately start the reacts for s2. ^^
