these guys don’t know who they’re messing with. They wouldn’t even be strong enough to be part of Askeladd’s crew!

Adam

im glad you had such faith in thorfinn to disarm that guy. But the truth is much more depressing - he is entirely discouraged. I don’t think many protagonists reach this low

And so, yet another one succumbs to Snake. Don't worry, I'm a straight man yet that final shot had me too like "oh..." Anyway, "not a single good thing has happened in my entire life." What a thing to say. Even just imagining the mental state required to get someone to say this is beyond me, let alone actually saying it. Not a single thing, not even the one. How truly truly awful. This was the episode for me where I really started to lock in, thinking "well shit, this is so much worse than I expected." One thing I did want to say, it's a minor thing, but regarding the "we have a busy day ahead of us." In japanese, the subject is often left implied, and not stated directly. In this case, the japanese sentence was (transliterated) "kyou mo isogashii." If translated literally, this would say something like "today, too, is busy." So he's not necessarily saying it's gonna be busy for himself as well, just that they've got things to be doing and he doesn't want to hold up, whichever way this pans out. It's not implying that he's planning on doing stuff, just that he wants to hurry it all up. Although of course conveying that nuance is really difficult in translation.

To be fair, Olmar must have been very drunk from how he sounded and looked.

"He's quite good-looking!" I said the exact same thing at the exact same moment! XD Thorfinn stating that not a single good thing has happened in his entire life makes me wonder if he's completely forgotten those first years of his life with his family, which wouldn't even be surprising after everything he's been through since he was 6. Whatever the case, it's rough seeing him so dejected and empty. If anyone ever needed a big hug... T_T

🗣"But Thorfinn is not simply going to allow himself to be killed." Many if not all viewers (myself included) have shared this exact thought, eager to see the antagonists provoke Thorfinn and face the consequences. I thought to myself, "They have no idea what they're in for with Thorfinn."👊🏼💥 Therefore I was like you utterly shocked by how much Thorfinn has lost his will to live. 😲 In his current state, it seems as though he has resigned himself to whatever fate awaits him, accepting even his own death without resistance. Yukimura masterfully plays with contrasts, transforming Thorfinn from the warrior-minded youth who would have fought anyone disrespecting him, refusing to back down from confrontations into a young man who is meek, subservient, and devoid of retort, consumed by despair. His transformation from a fierce fighter to someone seemingly resigned to his fate is both striking and profound, highlighting powerful themes of loss, hopelessness, and the search for purpose.

Great point! This statement about not experiencing a single good thing in his life underscores the depth of his trauma and the overwhelming burden of his past. It’s a poignant reminder of how deeply one’s experiences can shape their perception of life, often overshadowing the positive moments. The loss of his father and Askelaad, the violence he has encountered since childhood have clearly taken a toll on him, leading to a sense of emptiness and hopelessness. This makes his character arc even more compelling, as it reflects the struggle many face in real life when trying to reconcile their past with their present.

Yeah that was exactly my impression too. He's too young to fully remember the best parts of his life and now all he has is the trauma of violence and war. My heart breaks for him!

icyfire

Can't tell if I want to BE Snake, or be WITH Snake 😅

i am amazed by the predictions you've made. But yeah i can imagine people making educated guesses about 'what' is going to happen. I've seen this with lots of reaction channels. I believe the trick to good writing is also 'how' it happens. This is where i do think vinland may throw some curveballs at you Dr Sophie, through its sheer amount of artistic imagery and visual storytelling.

Einar not knowing about thorfinns past and like you said if he knew what he'd seen and unfortunately done. These are truly some of my favourite types of story, violent men with violent pasts trying to be better. This , the red dead games, berserk to an extent its not exactly the same. Thorfinns having an existential crisis over by the well meanwhile his boy einars just chatting up that lady is kinda funny

Olmar not being able to draw his sword in episode 2 was a bit of realism trolling him hard. You can't normally draw a normal sized sword from a standard scabbard if you wear it on your back, your arm simply isn't long enough. There are tricks and modifications to make it work but without that it's just physically impossible.

Leah Henderson

I was also one of those who was like "you fools have no idea who you have there!" We're so programmed from S1 to see him with that fight in him that it's like a full body shock when he suddenly doesn't have it.

Common short sword (like the roman gladius) would be fine, that's around 50-60cm blade and I could draw that from a sheathe on my back. And basically any sword longer than 1m would start to become difficult and clumsy. Also it would require lot of practice to sheathe back even that 50cm blade, but drawing it is achievable with very little difficulty.

OnikeNew

Yes, I had the same reaction to Snake :D
