Little Lala

Of all the episodes in the 2 seasons, this was the reaction video I was waiting for the most 😆

Leah Henderson

Lakan being such a smitten wife guy is so stinking cute! ^-^

Axel

I figured out in mid December when you'd get to this episode. This is my favorite anime of all time and your reactions have been really fun. I'm looking forward to Frieren too.

And thus, the train has pulled out of the station. Everything is starting to come together as we ride the express train as it picks up speed until the season finale. I've said it many times before, the author really is a genius. She knows how to plant all these little clues throughout the story and make you think their relevance is completed, but it all turns out to be part of something even bigger. Damnit, why do I have to wait until next Tuesday to get another reaction? Note: Ah-Duo's sudden appearance isn't so sudden in the books, and unlike other concubines, Ah-Duo was allowed to leave. Why? Also, you may not have picked up on it, Lakan knew he wasn't meeting with Jinshi right away. Basan and Ah-Duo jumping in surprise when lakan directs the events of the hunting trip to them is likely because they realized he knew Ah-Duo wasn't Jinshi. The way Lakan describes it is literally him boasting to the two that he knows Jinshi's not under that veil without revealing anything to Shisou. (remember, Lakan can't see faces and relies on instincts to differentiate people. His instincts would tell him that Ah-Duo is not Jinshi.)

Buzzard

Luomen is Maomao on crack!! Dammit, I laughed so hard I got a stitch in my side. 🤣 Something to ponder: Shishou was referred to as the tanuki of the West, and in mythology tanukis are seen as clever, mischievous tricksters.

Mei

I was so excited to see you react to this episode!! Especially when you were discussing how you believe Maomao would be kidnapped again. :D Lakan's such an amusing character haha love how he's so in love with his wife! Gotta love how crafty he was with the wine to confirm his suspicions, too. Can't wait for the next episodes!

My favourite arc in this season is finally here! I’m excited for your reactions for the upcoming episodes! It’s going to be a wild and emotional ride!

Your surprise at Ah Duo's appearance behind the mask is absolutely hilarious! 😂 Sophie:“What are you up to, Lakan? Your daughter is about to be kidnapped!” I have to admit, I had the same thought haha! But when you asked about Jinshi, it all clicked for me. The twist of Ah Duo taking on Jinshi's role and where he could be at that moment. With Maomao already kidnapped and Jinshi beginning his search, as confirmed in the final visual of the episode, it makes sense. The conversation between Lakan and Shishou occurred after they realized Maomao was missing, suggesting it could be part of an investigation into her abduction. Lakan should definitely take a more active role in finding his beloved daughter. Well done, Sophie, you perfectly nailed it! 👏 A few episodes ago, Anshi told Jinshi, "Keep your favorites concealed, or someone may take them from you," and even requested Gaoshun and Suiren to take his cherished toy from when he was little. She was imparting an important lesson about keeping them hidden. Moreover, I suspect Luomen informed Lakan about the Royal Family's color blindness, which might lead Lakan to consider that Shishou has royal blood. He likely had this suspicion before but lacked the proof to back it up. This aligns with Maomao's observations, Lakan has strong instincts and gut feelings but often lacks the motivation to seek the evidence that could support them.

Maomao: "The term length of rear palace workers is usually two years" This information is quite insightful and essential to the plot. Typically, ladies-in-waiting for a high consort are provided by the consort's family and serve as her direct subordinates. They are not part of the rear palace staff and often act as the consort's "shield." Maomao's role as Gyokuyou's lady-in-waiting is an unusual exception. 👩🏼‍🦰👍🏼 As Maomao previously observed in Lishu's case, the only individuals a consort can truly trust in the rear palace are her ladies-in-waiting. Unfortunately for Lishu, she faced opposition from everyone around her. 🥲 While these ladies can bring in valuable external knowledge, this information is a double-edged sword; if it were to leak, it could easily be used against their mistress. Maomao is well aware of this risk. She contemplates how an outsider might attempt to harm a consort, specifically, another consort or a palace staff member. Given that most of the rear palace workforce changes every two years, the only individuals who would retain potentially harmful knowledge from those notes are the ones who remain indefinitely—namely, the consorts and their ladies-in-waiting (which would fall under Jinshi's responsibility to monitor and investigate) or the clinic workers.

Maomao: "If vou killed me here they'd find you right away." One important lesson I learned from the outstanding TV series "How to Get Away with Murder" is that homicide rates are among the most reliable crime statistics, as it's nearly impossible to hide a dead body. 🏯🔪🩸 For instance, even Concubine Jin's cadavre was eventually discovered when Maomao tracked the scent and the mushrooms. If Suirei intends to take Maomao out of the rear palace to eliminate her elsewhere, she needs to manipulate Maomao into cooperating until it’s too late. She could then kill her in a secluded area, burying her in land unsuitable for crops or weighting her body with rocks and sinking it in the ocean. However, committing murder right there in the clinic would be risky, as it would create noise and draw attention. For this to work, every clinic worker would need to be complicit, including those who might resent the man who has trapped them there. Murdering a lady-in-waiting from the Jade Pavilion would raise significant concerns. Additionally, the clinic sees visitors, so everything would need to be concealed from current patients and those arriving soon. This includes hiding bloodstains, any damage caused by Maomao's struggle, and, most importantly, the body itself.

at the start (the hair stick tangent). I actually read a book where they taught their daughters and other "high rank" ladies to use the hair stick as a weapon. it was mostly if a man tried to force themselves on them. they where to pretend to give up, lift their hands over their head when laying down (to grab it) and then stab the man into his eye and give them basically a lobotomy. Today - that is a no go. for multiple reasons, even if it's unfortunately still a common violence that happens towards women. But there have always been similar "needle weapons" in use. Hair sticks where more common in Asia, while Hat pins where more common in the west. And I do believe knitting needles or needlebinding needles have also been used up in the ages. Basically small, easily concealed self defence items. I find myself in a morbid fascination with them, as I wish they were never needed - but also like reading about how they where used and why. Same with a book I have about poisons and how it was used by women to "equalize" the power. Lots of info about women up during the ages who where very good with what they did and how it changed society.

I couldn't have said it better myself. To give some personal antidote, here in the west, hat pins were long extremely sharp silver pins that would "sew" the hat onto the head, almost like sewing pins except larger, longer, and more sturdy. There was actually such a prevalent cases of women using them as self defense that a lot of men (especially in the government here in America), either attempted or succeeded in the banning of hairpins sighting "to much violence for such young polite women". Again this is ironic as guns went completely unregulated and "bb-guns" (a small gun that usually shot small balls of lead) were a consistent gift to young immature boys who often extremely injured (Famous quote from a movie "You'll shoot your eye out! You'll shoot your eye out!"), even sometimes killed local wildlife (stray dogs, cats, squirls, and raccoons just for fun (the poor cuties)), and on the sadly scary occasions, kill another child if close enough and in a vital area. It's interesting to see that the eastern women were not that far in both placement and idea for a weapon of self defense.

WARNING THIS IS LONG AND TANGENTAL BUT CONTAINS NO SPOLIERS Another thing that this episode introduced that I don't think you've touched on is the fact that Lakan has equal station to Shishou. This is HUGE!!! If you remember the reason Loulan (Shisui) was even introduced as a high consort was due to Shishou's connections as a high ranking official. Marrying into the family would give this side significant (west) power over Lakans family (east). The East and the West are basically at War now due to Maomao kidnapping! But hold on I'm getting ahead of myself. Maomao constantly states that she is of lowly birth due to growing up in the pleasure district, THIS IS UNTRUE, (darn you unreliable narrator you). If Lakan officially claims Maomao as his child, Maomao has an unprecedented amount of power/station and is now an extension of the East (by being apart in the La family). If Maomao is kidnapped by the Shi family, that is a direct attack on the opposing family causing basically a civil war in the palace. Thankfully and also not thankfully?, enter Jinshi. Being the heir, even unofficially, means he is apart of the royal family and courting Maomao, the technical "princess of the east" (yes maomao you have a title other than apothecary), carries heavy favor of the royal family to the La family. We have seen this in the Emperors approval of Maomao becoming Jinshi's consort. Remember how the guy a few episodes back told Jinshi it would be well to introduce "new blood" into the family line. This guy knows that maomao is part of the La clan due to learning that Lahan is her father, I mean this guy was Lahan best friend. He's basically saying 'dude go with the maomao and not shisui' because old blood was in reference to mother royals blood still being a part of the family blood line at this point and a union between a non mother royal would weaken there standing immensely should Jinshis status of heir be utilized. Thus ending there rein of terror that has been attacking the royal family for decades at this point. Oh my goodness, I need a breather after that one. I love political drama like this man, I feel a little like madman in front of a cork board but I need you to stay with me for a little longer. Also this is spoiler free and only provides evidence already handed to us by the show, even though there is more evidence in the future about Maomao (no duh this show is about her). Another reason maomao goes with them is the promise that she will understand the resurrection medicine. Now technically as we have learned, maomao loves medicine regardless and such a rare medicine would already be a large enough enticer. However my theory (and I reiterate just my OWN PERSONAL THEORY), is that Maomao wants to cure her mom or at least prolong her life further. There is so much I could say but this is almost 3,000 words and I can't be writing an essay in these comments this big man. Anyway I hope you have had a lovely new year and I can't wait till you watch the next episode, I'll be waiting eagerly! I also haven't watched your reactions to Freiren yet so maybe Ill catch up in preparation for the next season, I'm intrigued!

I never considered that Maomao's kidnapping could lead to such a significant diplomatic incident between the East and the West. And for the reason you clearly outline, not only has Jinshi, the hidden heir, taken a liking to Maomao, who is also valued for her skills by the emperor, but she is primarily the daughter of a noble family and a high-ranking officer in Lakan. Shishou possesses a genetic trait of color blindness, which is prevalent in his home region, situated in the western part of the country. He is suspected of having a conspiracy or connections with a powerful western nation to interfere with the empire's internal matters. Thus, Maomao's kidnapping could indeed serve as the spark of a massive powder keg that might ignite a civil war within the Empire as you explained. 💯 I am eager to see two of the brightest minds in the country, Lakan and Luomen, along with Jinshi (the second most powerful individual in the country), investigating everything to find their poison enthusiast. This is exciting!!! I'm so thrilled. https://media.tenor.com/7r_w7HQHkuIAAAAM/this-is-where-it-gets-interesting-anthony-alfredo.gif

Regarding Maomao's unreliability as a narrator, I think this is the first instance where we actually discovered the quack doctor's name.👐 I appreciate that this episode revealed the quack doctor's name through Luomen. Since we primarily view events from Maomao's perspective, we only get to know what she considers significant. Guen's name was not among those.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I didn't touch on it because I've discussed Lakan's status numerous times and his importance including Maomao's position to be unable to hide away from politics due to being his daughter. It was also obvious what the show was saying so it didn't seem necessary to delve into and reiterate what the show has already clearly positioned. I've also discussed the potential for civil war as well as it being a coup :) You say IF Lakan claims her but he already has. The Emperor knows Maomao is his daughter as he openly states to everyone present at the Shrine that he doesn't want to get on his bad side. Loumen's friend didn't say it to Jinshi but to the Emperor about taking Maomao as a concubine to dilute the bloodline. Many people are now aware of Maomao's position thus insinuating it is public knowledge. I don't believe the teacher was positioning her against Shishui but more an indication that to keep the bloodline strong and free from illness/disease then they need to expand. He wasn't Lakan's best friend. He was Loumen's. He knows Loumen's family connection and Maomao as the adopted daughter because of their earlier conversation. The Emperor knew her true father and specifically stated he does not want to piss off his strategist by taking Maomao. There's no indication that the teacher knows Maomao is Lakan's daughter UNTIL the Emperor references it. The Mother Royal is always going to be connected to the family line. There's no divesting from it completely. It's not a matter of positioning Maomao against Shishui or East against West but more emphasising WHY Shishou would be vying for power and positioning his daughter into a place of intimacy to take down the dynasty from the inside. I don't believe he intends his daughter to marry but rather utilise her place to assassinate the Emperor as part of their coup. Kidnapping Maomao would set East against West but they would already be against one another as one is loyal to the Emperor and the other is vying to take over. We know there's internal friction that Shishou is playing upon. My understanding is that Maomao is the plan to lure out the heir to assassinate him OR to remove her from interfering with their coup within the palace itself. They don't intend to fight Lakan because they believe that by the time their plan comes into fruition, they will have taken control of all the central aspects of the palace including the throne and Lakan would be in a difficult situation of risking Maomao or standing against them. Maomao is their insurance policy of keeping Lakan in check as well as baiting out the heir to the throne. I also had that theory too in S1 in relation to the Resurrection Medicine! Great minds think alike!

Peaches

Ooh I really like that last theory, I didn't think of that! Also its been so long I forgot you agreed with the medicine theory as well! You have definitely swayed my reasoning and even though they were my main theories, they are only just that, theories! I love when someone enters a new evidence or viewpoint I might have overlooked! I think that's why I really like your channel. SO many channels just accept what they hear and don't really make there own conclusions from themselves but the reason I watch reactions/analysis if FOR the different conclusions! Keep it up, I'm excited to see your reaction to the next episode, its one of my favorites for sure!

Kita

And the mushrooms that the middle consort used to harm others

Kita

Lakan knew that wasn’t Jinshi - he’s too smart to fool. I said this before I finished watching the video, so if you also realized it, I will now continue the video 😅

Kita

I know you have a full time job and this is something you do on the side for fun, but I really want you to see the rest of the episodes fast. It’s going to just keep going up from here till the final episode and I can’t wait to see your reaction to it.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I wish I could but if I binge watched the videos would be a lot shorter as I'd be so tired that I'd not really be able to analyse them!! But we will get there :D

Kita

Thanks! It’s also good cause that means we get to watch apothecary diaries together for a bit longer. I was just getting impatient 😅. I am constantly looking for good reactions, and after yours is done I will just have to wait for season 3 reactions, as I have seen all the ones I think are good reactions. I just want to keep reliving this show - it’s just so good! 😊
