28:35 This is one of those elements of story writing that so many writers fail to implement. The subtle exposure of elements to (readers) to make a concept not alien when they seek to drench the reader in it. This subtle exposure improve the acceptability of the element as it reappears later int he story. Brilliant. It was hard to catch, but the moment the camera looked at the seat, the imposter had wet herself in fear. It's far more descriptive in the manga and LN, but I assume the studio felt they needed to be more reserved with the anime. I believe it's only mentioned in passing during the first season or first half of season 2, but Lakan's adopted son looks like Lakan because Lahan is his nephew. The entire La family are all clearly brilliant and unique in their own ways. 38:46: The author represents Lakan and Lahan as foxes, as they are as "cunning as a fox." Maomao is a cat because she's "as curious as a cat always getting into trouble." The soldier (I can never remember his name) is a dog because he's "faithful and honest to his core."

I'm not sure it was even mentioned that he had an adopted son up until now! :') Or if it was - it was just such a passing comment that it was overlooked. I think it may have been beginning of S2 perhaps!

KatoBen

It was a very minor comment. It was either Gaoshune or Jinshi who was briefly reiterating Lakan (for the audience) and briefly mentioned he adopted his nephew.

Season 1 episode 15, about 16 minutes in.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

God that was so long ago - I was not remembering that in the grand scheme of everything else taking place! :')

Peaches

No worries, you aren't the only one I've seen forget this seemingly through away line! I missed it on my first go around as well and it was only until I was watching with a friend again did I catch it

NO SPOLIERS BELOW I PROMISE I really like this episode! I actually though what happens in this episode, would happen in the last one which is why I was so excited for you to watch it. The reason being is showing Jinshi's intelligence. Jinshi's character is literally always talking about his beauty or his looks or his station, all things he has received from those before him. But his intelligence especially since he's the same age as Maomao is so underrated to me. Jinshi literally memorized each and everyone of the like 50 servants in Loulans court and that alone is a feat but if he is doing this with every concubine in the rear place that is almost 2,000 women I believe! It can be kinda understated the job that Jinshi preforms in his office, often calling it just paperwork, and sifting through often greedy proposals to find helpful ones from the nobles but Jinshi is also the "manager of the rear place", there is rarely anything in the rear palace he does not know about. I know you have already stated this, I just love this episode shows the heavy burden this position is on Jinshi already and this is suppose to be lighter life sentence than the workload and responsibility of being the heir to the throne. Many people dismiss Jinshi's character so much online but I really do love him so much and how he mirrors Maomao childhood with the concubines talking about him and then the courtesans talking about maomao. They are very much two sides of the same coin, and even though this story is told through Maomao's POV as the unreliable narrator, I really enjoy seeing Jinshi's POV as well!

Buzzard

Funny thing about foxes. They are classified as canines, but have some feline characteristics. So Maomao fits right in with the male members of the La clan.😼

Buzzard

Is that Maomao standing on the bookshelf in the back?

charlie

almost an hour run time! always love your analysis the longer videos always get me so excited can’t wait to watch after work

Anthony Willetts

I knew you'd enjoy the scene of Lakan finding out Maomao was missing haha

Scarmath

Just an incredible called shot there about how the Jinshii scene would play out. You really are amazing at connecting facts and thematic elements. I feel like Watson watching Holmes.

WondrousMay

Your discussion is on-point as always! I think you’ll really love what’s coming up next!

Tobe

I had a really busy December so I'd fallen behind but I'm finally caught up just as we're going into the final stretch of episodes. Love your reaction and the depth of the post episode discussion

I'm new here, so I'm unsure how you decide on new shows. Please consider adding Link Click to your list of shows to look into! I really enjoy your theory crafting, and that show is rife with mystery, really good emotional moments, and not to mention great animation.

The way I do my selections is that I gather recommendations from here and YT and then I get a friend to send me a brief description of the shows to avoid spoilers. I then pick 2 of the shows that I want to watch most but I balance a less popular one with a popular just so that my channel doesn't absolutely tank in the YT algorithm. They'll both be shows I want to watch but I'll do research as well to see how they perform on YT. If both don't perform well then I'll switch 1 of them out and save it for after the less popular show finishes. For the 3rd show - it's a Patreon vote that determines it but the options are still based on what I want to watch! :) I'll add Link Click to the list though but it's a very long one at the moment haha!

@2:19 & @29:10 Your ability to anticipate the unfolding events in animes is most of the time TRULY REMARKABLE.  I am frequently amazed by your forecasts. 🧠👁👏🏽👏🏿👏🏻👏🏼 For instance, you warned us about the terrifying nature of Jinshi, and despite your caution, he still managed to send chills down my spine!🙀 This episode marked the first time he openly displayed his fury, posing a serious physical threat. The interrogation scene between Jinshi and Renpu was undoubtedly the highlight, executed with exceptional intensity. Jinshi's fierce grip, piercing glare and screams at the attendant conveyed just how enraged he was. The poor girl was visibly shaken, trembling and in tears, as she faced the dire consequences of pretending to be Loulan and aiding her escape from the rear palace—a capital offense that could easily lead to her death. An potential overlooked moment that foreshadowed Jinshi's discovery of Renpu was the story involving concubine Jin which you skillfully reminded us of before it occurred. The fact that they had been unaware of her replacement for an entire year highlights Jinshi's keen observational skills; he has been mentally cataloging distinguishing features all along. This man is truly clever, do not underestimate him! 🕵‍♂️

Sophie: "Oh yes I completely forgot [...] Jinshi looks like the young (late) emperor!" Genetics is a fascinating subject, and I have a deep interest in it, having conducted a few studies on the topic.🧬👥️ It’s intriguing how children often resemble their grandparents even more than their parents. 👩‍🦳🧑‍🦳 In Jinshi's case, this adds a layer of complexity, as he is actually the son of the current Emperor but was raised as his brother. To our knowledge so far, he remains unaware of his true lineage. This confusion is at the heart of Jinshi's intense identity crisis; he struggles to distance himself from the late emperor's troubled legacy while simultaneously embracing the persona of "Jinshi" and rejecting the role of royal heir. This young man seems unable to find peace. Believing himself to be an illegitimate child, Jinshi feels likely he is not a true prince and unworthy of the title. As a result, he positions himself as someone who is outside the imperial family and not a part of the Ka. Choosing to become a eunuch in the rear palace was, in his eyes, the safest path forward. Additional note: Lahan looks just like Lakan and could easily be mistaken for a biological son, which is amusing haha.

You are absolutely correct to point out Jinshi's intelligence, which viewers might overlook alongside Maomao. And this is also why I really enjoyed this episode's focus on Jinshi! It allowed us to explore various facets of his character and gain insight into his internal thoughts. This episode offered a glimpse of his true self, moving beyond the Jinshi facade, and season 2 has been dedicated to peeling back those layers. Jinshi truly excels when he is actively engaged with those he seeks to help, showcasing his seriousness and dedication, as well as his compassion for others. Beneath the charm of an appealing eunuch lies a HIGHLY CAPABLE INDIVIDUAL , a side that Maomao significantly brings to light. Moreover, we also see his imperfections: his insecurities, impatience, and the emotional turmoil he experiences when confronted with challenges. His sharp instincts enable him to connect the dots between the missing eunuch and Loulan, and the fact that he has memorized all the ladies-in-waiting demonstrates that, despite having distanced himself from his role as crown prince, he takes his responsibilities very seriously.

Mickael Landry

''Many people dismiss Jinshi's character so much online'' Yeah his character elicits strong reactions, and he's definitely not universally loved. His constant teasing and sort of manipulation of Maomao can be interpreted as annoying or even borderline harassment, especially if viewers aren't fond of that type of dynamic. Some viewers might find him also too perfect, handsome, intelligent, powerful, and skilled in everything. This can make him seem in a way unrealistic and less relatable. I wasn't a fan at first, but he eventually grew on me.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

I am pretty sure that Suirei doesn't have a penis and testicles. I think she would pass the eunuch test without collaboraters.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I thought it would be more than just a pat down and we aren't told it's anything other than a pat down until 2 x 20 :) So it was merely a theory I had
