SOMETHING ALSO JUST CLICKED BECAUSE WHILST I WAS GETTING THIS READY FOR PATREON I WAS EDITING 2 x 13 FOR YT!!In 2 x 13 there's rumours that Loulan could also be pregnant. In this episode - Maomao is about to tell her what the lantern plant could be used for in relation to the pleasure district which is ABORTIONS as it induces vomiting and stomach cramps due to it being poisonous.

Meaning she could be inducing an abortion because she is pregnant OR ensuring that she's not actually pregnant because she fears she could be.

AWAJFWOSAHFWIAFHAIDHFAW

Loulan also says "I know" which could be interpreted as her knowing it's poisonous but in relation to Maomao's conversation and how she's cut off in talking about the true reason it's used in the pleasure district, it could be Loulan saying SHE KNOWS WHY OTHER WOMEN WOULD USE THIS PLANT BECAUSE THAT'S WHY SHE'S USING IT!!

Demon Slayer is great entertainment with a boatload of lovable characters. It might not be the most deep or complex story, so I can understand where some people might come from (though that also doesn't mean there is no depth or complexity), but it definitely is a lot of fun, it looks gorgeous and has some emotionally beautiful moments as well.

Brendan Horn

Lol, glad you made the connection between Latern plants and abortions. So let me ask, does that perhaps inform as to why someone might have left lantern plants on the grave of Taihou?

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Oh it's 100% symbolic of Surei wishing her grandmother had access to such a plant or at least known what it could be used for. That the cycle of suffering would never have happened if only her grandmother had been able to terminate her pregnancy. If she had been able to do so - the baby wouldn't have grown up without a mother and Surei wouldn't have had to suffer in turn this political manipulation and potential abuse from Shenmei, as well as what I'm presuming is the loss of her own mother in turn. Akin to "I wish I had never been born" but it can also be symbolic of her vengeance against the very family that caused her own to suffer. A poison from within the royal family itself due to her descending from that bloodline. Definitely multiple ways you could argue it!

I tried watching Demon Slayer, but I quickly got bored after a few episodes. The action shōnen genre is just not for me. Unfortunately, after Apothecary Diaries, all you're left with is action shōnen, except for Frieren. I will give Monster a try. However, if it's not to my liking, I will probably say goodbye after Frieren. I might return if there's something other than action shōnen on the table again. In any case, I love your Apothecary Diaries reactions.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

We're also watching Monster which is not a Shonen but deep and philosophical but also a thriller and there's still a 3rd series after Vinland that's not been decided on yet :) I watch a variety - I'll never have 3 Shonen running at the same time. Vinland also isn't an action shonen. The only shonen is Demon Slayer.

Greybeard

As I said, I give Monster a try. Vinland is certainly good and of course a seinen, sorry about that, completely forgot about it. 🤭

Artistically Demon Slayer is pretty good. But that wasn't enough to keep me feeling invested. I really wanted to like it. I think it's better than Solo Leveling, a show I mindlessly watched, but I couldn't do that with Demon Slayer for some reason. I hope you do like it. The visual style is very good.

Pedro D. G.

I'll have to upgrade my sub so I can cry rewatching Violet Evergarden with you 😂 I think you'll like Demon Slayer purely for the art and imagery, you are 100% right when you say that sometimes we just want to sit back and appreciate some "nonsense" or "easy to digest" show, I usually go for some Power Fantasy Xianxia/Wuxia (Chinese Fantasy)

Sebas Tian

It also has one of the best animations ever in my opinion

Sebas Tian

Wait so are you telling me that Shisui/Loulan sees Mao Mao as a redhead?

Tobe

Hi Sophie, I for one am happy that you're giving demon slayer a chance. It's not my favourite anime, but I do think people who write it off as only having good animation are doing it a disservice. The story is trying to say something about humanity and compassion, and I think you will find interesting things to discuss while watching. I can't remember where exactly but I once saw someone describe Jinshi and Maomao's attachment styles as anxious and avoidant respectively, and that makes so much sense when we look at their backstories. After having the things he loves taken from him, it makes sense that Jinshi is sooo anxious about losing Maomao. It was a gag scene but it rings emotionally true that his reaction to being separated from Maomao in Season 1 would be to sit in a corner and have mushrooms sprout all over him, and obviously we've seen that anxiety rear its head more seriously in the last episode. And as for Maomao, it makes sense that growing up knowing her emotional and physical needs would come second to the courtesans' work has put her in a place where she can't admit to needing connection with other people. Like saw in Season 1, she couldn't admit that she was worried about her dad because she loves him, it was because he's her teacher. She didn't help Xiaolan with the ice because she's a friend, no, it's because she wouldn't be able to sleep. And even in this episode, she's holding on to Jinshi's hairpin, but only because he's clingy and it'd be a waste to melt it down. Absolutely not because it's a gift from someone she cares about. The parallels between the two of them are so fascinating, because like you pointed out they've got so many similarities, but it's those key differences that create tension and I think that's ultimately what's going to push them to grow as individuals. Speaking of parallels, there's also so much that can be said about Shisui and Maomao both having mothers who've physically hurt them, but I'm going to hold off until the end of the season to get your thoughts first.

Buzzard

Looking forward to watching your reaction to Demon Slayer. Don't believe the naysayers. If it wasn't any good the movie wouldn't have set box office records last year. It has more layers than an onion, as well as kick-ass action and outstanding animation.✨

Great reaction 🙏 I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming episodes and can’t wait to experience them alongside you! Based on this latest episode, it seems that the distrust and unsettling feelings surrounding Shisui and Suirei may actually be misdirected. Instead, I suspect that this woman called Shenmei is the true source of the problems, given her sinister presence and menacing glare—she might very well be the mastermind behind the chaos. It’s apparent that Shisui and Suirei have no ill intentions toward Maomao. 🤗They are being their authentic selves around Maomao, simply doing what they believe is necessary. However, I’m puzzled about the implications of Shisui consuming the lantern plant. Does this suggest that she and the Emperor had sexual intercourse, and that she’s taking precautions to prevent any consequences from it? Until now, I believed the Emperor wouldn’t engage intimately with the concubine Loulan (Shisui) due to the risk of fathering a child, which could potentially empower Shishou’s clan to seize the throne. Given that it’s been about 1-2 weeks since Maomao was kidnapped and they left the back palace, and over 2-3 weeks since the Emperor supposedly visited her, Shisui wouldn’t need to take measures to terminate a pregnancy at this point. It seems more likely to me that she was simply being herself—quirky, yet aware of the plant’s potential uses (thanks indeed to Maomao). Additionally, if the Zi clan is indeed planning a rebellion for the throne by producing a significant amount of Feifa, which the Kingdom lacks, why would Loulan need to be pregnant with the Emperor’s child to secure an heir? 💥🔫💣

Mickael Landry

What raises my doubts are the two assassination attempts on Jinshi and the enemy's knowledge of his true identity, which imply that Loulan indeed had a sexual relationship with the Emperor. 🛌 Therefore this is not something either of them could have avoided; Shishou's family wields too much influence for the Emperor to disregard his daughter, leading them to meet just enough times to appease the Zi clan. This situation prompts then the question of Shisui's own motivations. Why is she attempting to prevent a pregnancy when her clan could use that as leverage for power? An heir from Loulan/Shisui would provide an easy pathway to regain authority within the royal family.🤱🫅 Thus this necessity to eliminate Jinshi arises if she were to conceive a son, particularly since her potential child would be of royal lineage. Did her father place her in this position specifically to have leverage over the Emperor? It seems that plan has now unraveled, but it also appears that the clan played a role in this by facilitating Shisui/Loulan's departure from the palace. Now, witnessing Shenmei's mistreatment of Shisui, how will she react if she discovers that her daughter (is she?) is attempting to terminate a potential heir? 🫣

🗣"Insects never survive the winter. They only leave behind their children." I sometimes feel guilty about writing too much so I do apologise 🙈 , but I also share your view about Shisui’s words, which seem to be a methaphor. It appears she reflects on how their ancestors failed to seize control of the kingdom, yet their will persists, reaching her generation. It might capture as you well elaborated how Shisui views their ambition as a plague on the kingdom. Shisui’s mask sinking into the water, not fully burned, symbolizes unfulfilled wishes. She realizes that if her desires remain unmet, they become intertwined with the references to the insect and offspring. In contrast, Kyouu's mask is completely burned, and I’m intrigued by his wishes, given the effort he put into the mask.🎭 🔥 Regarding the burning of the masks, they are attached to dry plant towers that ignite quickly, likely causing the masks to fall before being completely destroyed. The ropes securing the masks also burn faster than wood, leading to their inevitable descent.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

You've vastly underestimating the length of time. Because of her importance it was emphasised in 2 x 13 that the Emperor had to see her regularly. He's been seeing her since S1 so the likelihood of her being pregnant or thwarting pregnancies is clearly evident that she's been sleeping with him for quite some time. There's also the rumours surrounding her potentially being pregnant. You're looking at it from too limited of a scope. Another aspect with your perspective that I'd argue against is 'why would Loulan get rid of a baby that could be used to wrest power?' Because she doesn't want to be in that situation. She's being weaponised by her parents. This isn't her desires or wants. You're conflating her with the acts of her family rather than separating the two. Not to mention she has an abusive mother. Why would she want to bring a child into such a family where that child would be abused and used in turn? It would be a mercy for them both if she stopped a pregnancy. They don't want leverage over the Emperor. They want to take the throne for themselves. Shishou is connected to the royal bloodline. There's no need for the Emperor. There's no need for his children. Shishou placed her in that position to gain access to him and to help bolster their coup because she was in prime position to gain access and knowledge. Initially I believe their plan was for Shishui to assassinate him as she would be able to be intimately close but with Maomao's routine interventions - such a plan wouldn't work. Another point you're forgetting is that it's not just Jinshi they have targeted. It's all potential heirs. Hence the makeup powder, the strong scents, the plants. This has been an ongoing plot to prevent the Emperor from having children because no children no one to take over if the Emperor is ousted or assassinated = no competition to them taking over entirely. Your initial post and your second post contradict one another? You don't suspect they slept together that much and then you do suspect? I'm a little lost trying to follow your argument and perspective because it's been evident for a while that the intention isn't to have an heir to control the Emperor but to overthrow him entirely. You're looking at it as if Shishui is an active participant who wants this rather than someone whose coerced. She doesn't need to be pregnant but she cannot avoid being sexual with the Emperor as it's the expectation of her being a high-ranking.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I like that perspective but it's not Shisui's mask that sinks into the water. It's Maomao's. Shisui's doesn't have the marks along the cheek.

Mickael Landry

I was honestly quite confused and uncertain about whether Loulan had been intimate with the emperor, as I had two conflicting theories in my head after this episode. 🙃 However, your reply clears the fog in my mind, and I appreciate you reminding me that Jinshi is not the only one caught in a conspiracy. The emperor's concubines have all been targets of a significant scheme orchestrated by the Zi clan to stop the emperor from having an heir. I have somewhat lost track of the events from season 1. Moreover I won't hide from you that I also struggle to accurately gauge the concept of time in TAD haha ⏳; weeks and entire months can pass between each event, case, and episode, but since we follow Maomao's daily life, I have the misleading impression that the time interval is shorter. Your compelling argument that Shisui's actions are driven by self-preservation and a desire to protect a potential child from a toxic environment (rather than a calculated move against her clan's interests) makes totally sense.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I find it difficult too at times especially with S1 haha!! But S2 was easier in terms of we had a visual representation of time passing with Gyokyou's pregnancy!

Mickael Landry

🗣"Shishou placed her in that position to gain access to him and to help bolster their coup because she was in prime position to gain access and knowledge. I don't remember if you brought up this idea in one of yours reactions, but it's a relevant thought that I have never considered. I promise I won't bother you anymore haha, thank you again for all these insights. Wishing you a great end to your day Sophie! 😇❤️

DrSophieDarlingReacts

You're never a bother haha!! I have brought it up a few times in S1 / early S2! I also think I mentioned it not that long ago in an intro / outro in one of the recent episodes!

Gpinko

Good catch on the lantern plant in your caption lmao. This show does a really good job at sprinkling small hints throughout that don't seem important at the time, so people forget. But no, they are in fact important and get brought up later. Easy to miss especially when you spread out time between watching but i guarantee when you rewatch this series (because cmon, you''ll totally rewatch it on your own time it's that good) it's so fun to catch these hints. I am....so excited for you to officially meet Shenmei...she is....something. These next four episodes are absolute gold. I love this series so much. Actually this, FMAB, and Demon Slayer are in my top 5 favorite shows. And they are ALL so different, but so enriching in their own ways. I am very much an advocate for Demon Slayer, ignore the "hateful" comments and form your own opinions about it. Is the story as complex as AOT? Maybe not. Does it have to be? No. In fact I feel it brings out more emotional impacts you can certainly deep dive into. I feel like it'll be more than just a "chill and relax" show for you and you are a great person for this series to analyze. I personally enjoy reaction series that have more to bring to the series besides "always looking for action" and "wow this is so peak". Longer reactions -> the better for me.

Buzzard

Actually, Maomao's mask was not burned. Shisui told her (26:30) that the masks are enshrined for a year and then burned. The ones that were on the lake were the previous year's masks.

KatoBen

Last week, I mentioned how Lakan and Lahan are cunning foxes, Maomao is a curious cat, and the soldier was a faithful dog. This week, we learn that Shisui is a shapeshifting tankuki, as her entire presence in the show has been of two different masks. Shisui the carefree and honest girl, and Loulan, the high noble daughter. We've also heard Shishou called a tanuki, but we've only seenone mask from him, what side of him is he hiding? 31:30 That couldn't be Maomao's mask as her mask is to be enshrined at the shrine for a year before it's burnt. I honestly feel that Maomao's kidnapping was on the spot and never part of the plan. Maomao figured out too much information, and that became dangerous to their plans; however, neither Suirei nor Shisui want to har Maomao. The only option was for them to bnring her with them to protect their laid plans . . or perhaps they have som ulterior motives from bringing her along? What could her presene mean for their end goal? Can't wait for Saturday's reaction. On a side note, I'm bummed there's no chance for you to react to Ascendance of a Bookworm with your current schedule of reactions. The long awaited season 4 comes in April, and I know you'd love the story, but (sigh) maybe a reaction further in the future?

WondrousMay

I’m glad that you enjoyed this episode and getting to know more about Shisui through the festival and her interactions with Maomao and the boy. The way she casually dropped the information about her being abused by her mom was so sad. She definitely had to put on an act/mask even when she’s with her family because she has a role to play. I think the only times she is really herself is when she’s with Suirei and during some moments with Maomao.

Anthony Willetts

There are some other shows like Ascendance Of A Bookworm and To Your Eternity which are both really good shows that don't have a huge focus on action... I mean, yeah, To Your Eternity has some action as the story progresses, but it's nothing like the super action packed animes... Personally I did enjoy demon slayer... Can see why some wouldn't though... Haven't seen the movie yet though so can't give opinion on that...

Anthony Willetts

I'm surprised there's people unhappy with you choosing to watch demon slayer.... I'm pretty sure it's been considered one of the best recent animes to come out... And the movie broke records if I remember correctly... Not that I've seen it myself yet haha
