Content

SO if you can't tell my job offers so much flexibility that I can do more content than I ever thought possible hence the consistency and boosting my content to 7 days a week.

However - I want to also start branching out into movies. I'll not be separating content for Patreon so you will all have access to the movies. These will not be exclusive to the higher tier as they are early access ahead of the new YT channel I will be making. Plus we've Breaking Bad and Squid Game which are the exclusives as well as future TV Series.

My plan at the moment is 2 movies a week. I have no dedicated set day for them going live on Patreon but I will be giving a 48 hour early access. Not as long as a series but that's because it's such new content.

I do already have 3 movies in mind but I will take suggestions for after those 3 are done.

The first 3 movies will be:

The Last Samurai

300

Kingdom of Heaven

I love historical fiction so anything inspired by actual historical events is going to be an immediate YES.

The Last Samurai is a phenomenal movie! This is going to be fun!

If we are talking historical fiction I put all my chips in 13th Warrior

Sophie Movie reactions I'm honestly looking forward to, I just like seeing people's thoughts on movies as everyone has a different opinion ❤️☺️

Per IMDB: In 922 A.D., Ibn Fadlan (Antonio Banderas) is a Muslim emissary from Baghdad en route to meet with the King of Saqaliba when he is captured by a gang of Vikings. While Ibn and his people are intelligent and well-mannered, the Vikings are a rowdy and sometimes unpleasant lot, with an unquenchable appetite for food, alcohol, and women. However, in time he develops an understanding and respect for the Viking warriors and is welcomed into their society by their leader, Buliwyf. The rest of the plot summary is too spoilery

I recommend The Last Emperor! We’re approaching the end of The Apothecary Diaries S2, so it’ll be interesting to see the real life equivalent of the Inner Palace.

Great news, now I need to remember about historical fiction that I like, so I can make you enjoy them

Interstellar, Interstellar, Interstellar. It’s not a historical fiction type movie, but it’s one of the best movies in the past 25 years IMO. As for historical fiction, Saving Private Ryan is THE movie. Others: Thin Red Line, The King, Gladiator, There Will Be Blood, The Patriot, Brave Heart, Inglorious Basterds.

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) was a stellar adaptation of the book. Ended up winning the BAFTA for Best Film and the Oscar for Best International Feature Film in 2023. And if I were to lean into the territory of your PhD, In The Name Of The Father (1993) is a phenomenal courtroom drama about an Irishman who spent over a decade in prison after police tortured him int confessing to a crime he didn’t commit. And then there’s The Wind That Shakes The Barley (2006) starring Cillian Murphy. A tale of two brothers from Cork fighting the British during the Irish War of Independence.

If you’re into old comedies, I highly recommend The Great Race. A little historical framework, some fun playing with tropes, and just a fun movie overall. I’d love to hear your take on the 2002 adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo, honestly - for me it’s a rare bird where it’s a literary adaptation substantially different from the original work, but is the version I like best. (Peter Sellers’s Prisoner of Zenda is the same, but that one’s so hard to find that I imagine I would be hard to react to so that one I just recommend privately.)

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I'd definitely wait until I've read The Count of Monte Cristo as then I can more directly see the differences :)

Makes sense! It’s a brilliant movie on its own, so if you don’t feel like reading the book consider it just a general personal recommendation. (And frankly I have to admit I just kind of want to see your takes on most movies, you think so deeply and have such a personal viewpoint that it’s always interesting.)

2022 was the third time it had been adapted, and whilst it deviates from the book at times, it had also been described as being the most historically accurate battle scenes. It has been said the original film from 1930 is arguably better, as it was a closer adaptation to the source material.

HAL

honestly, seemed like nolans lower point to me, would probably recommend his other stuff instead, if you've already seen inception then tenet

omg there's a really amazing Mulan adaption film that you might like, Mulan: Rise of a Warrior (2009). it's not a Disney-fied version of the story, it's a Chinese action war film and is much more realistic/adult than the popular American adaptions of the Mulan story!

delle

as a disclaimer tho I am absolutely NOT particularly knowledgeable about history so if the movie is very inaccurate I would not know

It's going to be wild seeing young Ken Watanabe again. I also wonder how that movie has aged since

Historical... Dances With Wolves, The Northman, La Vita Bella, those are really good and all quite different.

It's based on the travel journal of an Islamic bureaucrat visiting the Rus Vikings. Extended into an adventure story by Crichton of Jurassic Park fame where the bureaucrat joins a Viking crew on a quest. Turned into the above movie with Antonio Banderas. Really solid action adventure.

Hmm.... historical fiction you say... here's something less known worldwide: "Unknown Soldier (2017) / Tuntematon Sotilas". A Finnish classic about the war with soviet union during WWII from the viewpoint of one Finnish company. It's based on a novel written by Väinö Linna in 1954, accounting some of his own experiences. And it has had 3 movie adaptions (1955, 1985, 2017), although the latest adaptation is based on the manuscript version of the novel that was released to public in 2000. It doesn't go too deeply into explaining the events, as it's more about the people. But in regards to the timeline in general, the events and depictions are accurate. And I will warn, it's a very heavy one. It's traditionally watched/broadcast on the Finnish independence day (6th of December).

recommending Hidden Figures (2016) if you haven't seen it already!!

i also really really love Gattaca (1997) and i feel like it's an incredibly underrated movie! (at least, no one i've talked to has ever even heard of it *cry*) it's not historical fiction, it's actually sci-fi dystopian (masquerading as a utopia), but much of the science is really rooted in reality. i first watched it in one of my high school science classes and i've always found the themes to be very interesting and compelling. also love the performances from Jude Law and Ethan Hawke!

Some suggestion for movies with historical elements: Sunshine (1999) with Ralph Fiennes Little Women (2019) and an overall amazing Movie: Dead Poets Society
