Season 2 back with another banger. It's more of the redemption arc shit i like so this is one of my favourites. So on to my points. I don't think it's the events of season he doesn't remember I think it's the dreams and vinland that he's blanking on which sucks cause it was a ray of hope in the dark days he asked leif about it in episode 21. Thorfinn not mentioning that "other man" was the king is quite funny to me. Him admitting he doesn't hate askeladd is a big step i think. I mentioned it in a comment on the season 1 finale, it's letting go of the hate and the violence. Perhaps not "forgiving" but moving on at least. I also agree the retainers destroying the wheat was just some spiteful act cause they think they're better. Trying to "put them in their place" so to speak and it's frankly pathetic. There's still a lot of i imagine self loathing with Thorfinn maybe thinking he can't be forgiven or to change but he's asking the right questions now. There's a path forward he's truly trying i believe. Is it strange for me to say I think he's being to hard on him himself, when talking to einar after the wheats been destroyed. understand his point and he's not wrong he probably razed dozens if not more farms in his warrior days but I feel the circumstances aren't the same. Also can we give a shout out to einars warrior impression AND thorfinns complete deadpan response to it 😀.

This was one of my favourite episodes of this season. Perhaps because I watched it at a time in my life where I had lost a lot, including much of what had given my life meaning and purpose. I felt very empty. And here was Thorfinn asking if he could change. The message to fill up my life with new, meaningful things was really inspiring :)

Gramps telling Thorfinn, 'being empty means you can fill yourself with anything' is such a wonderful moment. I feel almost everyone can relate to it. When I first read this scene in the manga, it went straight up and above askeladd's final moments (which is also so beautifully written). The panels of gramps and Thorfinn watching sunset were beautifully drawn in manga and anime has done such an amazing job to not only capture but enhance its essence. Eagerly waiting for your reaction to next episode.

🗣 "If you're empty, then you can fit anything inside you. In fact, it's better to be empty if you want to be reborn." Every moment featuring Sverkel resonates with me; this guy has an abundance of wisdom. 👴💬 That's a significant lesson from Sverkel to Thorfinn! It emphasizes the value of self-reflection and grasping one's feelings. Experiencing emptiness might often be perceived negatively, yet it can also act as a springboard for personal growth and change. By acknowledging this sense of emptiness, Thorfinn can concentrate on reconstructing his life with a more defined purpose and solid foundations, instead of being influenced by past traumas or hasty impulses. This perspective fosters resilience and suggests that sometimes, embarking on a fresh start can result in more meaningful and satisfying outcomes.

So, that shot of Thorfinn punching the retainer, I have something to say. In the manga, this arc features two corner to corner full page spreads. Part of Yukimura's style is that he's super economical with the big panels. Quite a few single page spreads, but only two double pagers. The first was the shot of Einar on the boat, which was basically just a dramatic introduction to a new arc. The second was this one, Thorfinn's punch. I really recommend you check out some of the manga after watching, but especially these chapters. The page turn here was just heart sinking, it comes truly out of nowhere. There's big significance to this moment, something Yukimura wants to make clear in no uncertain terms. The whole episode was about how far Thorfinn's come, and how much his character has already changed. And yet, the very first moment someone makes him angry, his immediate reaction is to punch. Mere minutes ago he was the voice of reason, trying to get Einar out of a nasty situation; yet when the anger strikes him directly, he does exactly the same. I won't expand more on this as I don't want to actually delve into his character in such detail here, but there is loads that could be said about this moment in context with the rest of the arc. This episode in general is just filled with banger quotes. One I particularly adore is the exchange with Sverkel. Thorfinn asks "Can I be reborn?" and what is the answer? Not a simple yes or no, but merely "work." Redemption in any sense is not something you explain. Saying stuff doesn't make you a good person, and isn't in any way a marker for progression. Redemption is something you earn, something you get given by the people you wronged. You have to work hard for it. In the world we live in, bad deeds are often profitable, and acting unjust in general is often beneficial. In such a world, being good becomes an active choice. "If you're empty, you can fit anything inside." Again, banger of a line, but it comes down to the same thing. Being empty is a state from which you can go anywhere you want, but in order to do so you still have to put in the effort to put the pieces in the hole to fill it in the first place. Work. That's what it comes down to. And for how amazing this season/show already is, Thorfinn has got a lot of work left to do. As an aside, the manga art of that scene at the beach is absolutely stunning. I'd share some panels from these chapters but I'm afraid patreon doesn't take kindly to images in replies, so... Oh well. 'Tis what it is.

This is the reason I have such a deep affection for Vinland Saga. The series is filled with themes that can profoundly connect with numerous viewers as you said (such as the search for identity, forgiveness, redemption, and relationships, etc.) It offers not just an engaging narrative but also imparts valuable lessons that can assist us in managing our own challenging times.

I think I read young Thorfinn and Askeladd’s relationship a little different than you. I think young Thorfinn genuinely hated Askeladd, and hoped to kill him in a duel one day. And I think on Askeladd’s last moments, Thorfinn was genuinely upset that his kill and purpose was taken from him, that he wasn’t the one to avenge his father. What do you think?

Leah Henderson

It was so great to hear Thorfinn admit he doesn’t hate Askeladd anymore. *I* got some closure out of that! XD I love Einar and Thorfinn together - they are so good for each other. I hope that doesn’t change! I’m loving your commentary 🍿

Yeah, sorry man and to everyone I can see the point, will taka a note would try not to make ralation in the coments for the incoming eps. I was too hyped thou

I do believe that Thorfinn hated Askeladd but I also believe that emotions are complicated and that as much as he hated him and wanted his revenge, there's also the side of him that has grown used to his company and respects him enough to follow orders and to be trusted especially considering he's been with Askeladd far longer than he's been with his father. I also didn't think his upset was at Askeladd being a stolen kill but that he's lost another person and the emotions he feels in that moment aren't what he expected them to be. He wanted Askeladd to die for so long but there's no joy or happiness in that moment - only sadness. Not necessarily because he was killed by another but that he realises that he doesn't hate Askeladd as much as he believes he does, but he only realises that when it's too late and Askeladd is dying.

Yeah, I can definitely see that take as well. Thanks for the reply ! :)
