The scene where Maomao calls Loulan "Shisui" is like a top 3 moment for me in the series so far. The way Loulan turns her head to face her after hearing it, and being so happy to be seen for the "bug girl" that she truly is brought out some intense emotions in me 💔 Also, Shenmei ->🗑🤮❌️❌️

Shisui is really always trying to pick the lesser of two evils, but still the choices she makes still weighs down on her as she refers to herself as her "mother's daughter". She views herself as a horrible person for doing these actions but in reality, she is probably the kindest soul to most in that fortress. I also want to point out that Maomao was actually ready to throw down with Shisui when she realized she was the cause of the children's death but literally catches her fist mid swing as she, split second, realizes the cause. I just though that was such a good choice by the animators to show that kind of gut reaction from Maomao.

Just an FYI, when you get to episode 24, you may also want to react to the spoiler free teaser for season 3 they released right after the episode aired. I would love to hear your speculations on what it could be about with so little information. 13:36 This is just a random guess, and I have nothing to back it up, Kyou might be from a branch family to Shenmei, and might be Shisui's cousin?? IDK. 31:52 Yeah, I think you were right. I never caught onto it until you made mention, but it sounds like Shinmei's intentions were to overthrow the royal family and put Loulan's child on the throne.(34:55 LMAO, I swear, I didn't skip ahead.) That ending got me as well. This also brings me to my theory that Shisui took Maomao not just to keep her quiet but to perhaps draw the attention and ire of Lakan and Jinshi. Draw in the army to bring down all of her mother's efforts before they had a chance to bloom.

I would love a book list! Of the series you are reading - I am always looking for recommendations and I don’t think I have read any of the ones you mentioned.

Buzzard

Jeeze, poor Maomao. She's always getting clobbered upside the head!🤕 I have to confess, no matter how many times I've seen this episode, I can't hold back the tears. Those poor children.😢

Mars

I just started reading Mistborn lol

Mei

I think it's so cute how Maomao got to kill and roast snakes using Jinshi and Shisui's hair sticks. Their favor really helped her a lot to survive that taibon. 🥹 Maomao calling her "Shisui" and the end scene with the poor kids never fail to make me cry as well 😭 They all deserve so much better! 🤧

The way you picked up on so many hints, like the explosion and the snakes, and made such accurate predictions is once again impressive! When you said, 'I hope Shenmei gets pushed off a high bridge or off the top of the fortress' I couldn’t help but laugh—your predictions are so spot-on that I’m almost expecting that brutal outcome for Shenmei now! 😂 I'm all in for it, can someone please take care of it 🌉🫷 Loulan's feelings towards her mother, which she shares with Maomao and us viewers, confirm your insights into Loulan's motivations. 💯 Shenmei lacks maternal love and views her offspring merely as a means to fulfill her ambitions for power. As you explained previously, Loulan is just as much a collateral victim of the Shi clan as Suirei. Loulan’s motivations are deeply rooted in her desire for love and acceptance, which makes her actions all the more poignant. It’s heartbreaking to see how characters like Loulan and Suirei are caught in the crossfire of their parents' ambitions. I always find it shocking, jarring when children's lives are taken in shows, it takes such a dark turn, leaving me in great disbelief. So, when I saw this scene, my first thought was that Loulan brought Maomao there to heal them from their poisoning and save them.😭 I really want Kyou-u to be reunited with his mom!

Maomao calling Loulan “Shisui” is even more emotional when we remember that she choose this name herself, in honour of her sister, her only family member that truly understands what she’s going through. It’s one of the few things that she chose for herself so it probably means a lot to her that even after everything, Maomao still recognizes her as Shisui. This episode is one of favourites so it was nice to hear your thoughts on it. I had faith that you would understand Loulan’s actions. Thank you as always for your wonderful reactions and discussion!

Great observations 👐 I couldn’t agree more with you! While many viewers may react with outrage, anger, strongly criticized Loulan for her harmful actions towards the children, it’s indeed crucial to consider the context and the desperate circumstances she faced. Her choice, though extreme, reflects a complex mix of compassion and desperation to shield the children from a grim fate. Sophie’s analysis of the final scene indeed sheds light on these nuances, highlighting how the show invites us to grapple with moral dilemmas. I don’t want to criticize those who may feel resentment and anger, as those feelings are completely valid. While taking the lives of children is undeniably a reprehensible act, it’s important for us to consider the factors that may have driven Loulan to make such a tragic choice.

Thank you for the kind words! It’s fun to read your comments too.

I had this gut reaction to Loulan in that end scene at first that was completely out of my control...it was like touching the outlet when it sparks. I was so horrified and "How could you!" for that visceral moment. But I do understand her reasoning and I feel sorry for her, and it had me thinking about how many times that same situation played out countless times throughout real world history...is probably still happening today. The episode ending right there totally depressed me, but whew, what an impactful one. T_T

I won't lie, I initially felt the same way🙈 🗣"How could you do that to the poor kids⁉️" I shouted those words from behind my screen haha. I was in disbelief, shocked, but then my disbelief faded as Sophie explained her drastic action more. The Apothecary Diaries is such an incredible series, and I think its success is largely due to its intricate storytelling. The manner in which it tackles delicate subjects and moral dilemmas can spark contemplation and conversation among its audience. It's both impactful and thrilling when a story pushes us to reconsider our views and prompts us to think about challenging topics and questionable actions.

Leah Henderson

I definitely agree about the storytelling! I was thinking how the writer did not shy away from this scene, nor from telling Anshi’s devastating history. Very heavy subjects and they are dealt with so carefully!

Tangent here but so hype that you're getting into the Cosmere!! If you do pick up Stormlight, Dalinar and Kaladin are at the very tippity top of fantasy characters IMHO. Do you plan on doing post-read book reviews or something like that? Even post-mid point or something like that for stuff as big as Stormlight
