I cant wait for the date

Username123

I was so excited I thought that the date would be this weeks episode🥲. Hopefully they expand the date from the manga, need it to be 20 mins +😂

Gabriel Tkacz

Knowing how each episode is usually two separate stories I would think it's half the episode

Also it makes sense that frierens tantrums last so long, because her lifespan is so long. What would be a couple minutes of a tantrum for a normal person could be days for her because of her perception of time.

Dillon leeming

34.30 this lady is over 1000 years old by the way. This is the episode I was waiting for after I read the manga I knew reaction would be mad. Also frieren I'm sorry to rain on your parade here but that was a side quest.

Leah Henderson

Yay a date! I bet if someone described a date to Frieren she would realize she has been on one with Himmel 😏 I do know what you’re saying about the demon child. I keep telling myself that it deceived me with its childlike appearance. I can’t help but want to think it has a chance at changing!

Everyone stay calm, its happening

Drift3r

A party of three socially awkward people makes for such a good story telling vehicle. One that can drive the plot on its own simply writing about their interactions with each other.

Joshua

one subtle way they showed frieren was wrong about deamons only using language blindly to deceive was in s1 when lügner and his crew talk alone amongst themselves, thats a small moment that often gets glossed over.

Your discussion about the demons was very interesting and it got me thinking as well! Since the story is primarily from Frieren’s perspective and her memories, I also think she’s been pretty biased about demons. I do hope we’ll get to meet more demon characters so we can get to know more about them. Frieren being parental figures to both Fern and Stark is so cute!!! She loves them a lot and it shows how much she’s come. I can’t wait for Fern and Stark’s date!

DrSophieDarlingReacts

RIGHT?! I also tell myself "Oh I'm just being deceived" but on the other hand I'm also wondering if I was brought into this village after having done a bad thing but I truly wanted to change but everyone kept reminding me that I was a monster and that I couldn't change because it's in my nature to be this destructive, selfish beast - would that not prevent me from changing because I'm being socialised into thinking that it's impossible for me to do so? Also the fact that she didn't kill the little girl either was such a bizarre turn. She could have but she didn't. She was wanting to atone but she just didn't know how to do it properly. She thought replacing one child with another would do the trick. There's also the dialogue where she says that they use words like "mummy" to stop Humans from killing them - it's a learned defensive tactic even if we see it as emotionally manipulative. There's definitely indications that there are demons who have the potential for change but perhaps humanity isn't ready to embrace that. I don't know haha! Something has always sat weird with me with that episode!

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Another is the little demon girl saying they use language to stop humans from killing them - it's less about emotional manipulation and more an act of trying to protect themselves from harm.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

There's just little indications that make me go "hmmm are we just bias and there is the potential for change and co-existence?"

I think it's so hard to tell with Schlacht because we don't know exactly how the future sight works. If they both can only see one possible future I fully buy in to your theory, but if they can see multiple possible futures I think you can still explain his actions while retaining the idea that demons work selfishly. He might see that the Hero of the South 100% dies if they fight then, and the only timelines where he himself dies there involve the Hero sacrificing himself, so he dismisses them as possibilities because he doesn't understand self sacrifice. I'm sure either way they will expand on it later and I'm very excited to see which way they go with it.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Oh for sure! It's hard to fully know what direction they're going in as the show is so good at keeping information close until they want to reveal it to you! I'm excited to see what they do it too!!

As my father's side grandmother used to say every birthday "We are getting older, we are getting sillier" and that suits Frieren to a T

WondrousMay

The portrayal of demons in Frieren has been a hot topic in the anime community so it’s nice to have a calm and logical discussion about them!

Leah Henderson

Yes, yes, and yes to every one of your points! The demon is like some kind of animal that has a limited capacity for understanding our human ways, but it seems like it's *trying to* and that alone makes it redeemable to me in some way. It also makes me wonder if it could indeed learn to the point of understanding. Humans have an evolved understanding of magic compared to a thousand years ago... Couldn't demons evolve in some way, too??

This is at least the third time in the series where Flamme has messed with Frieren. I think she did it for kicks tbh 😂 First Flamme told her that men would want a dissolving clothes potion, then taught her the “throw a kiss” seduction technique and now it’s that if you’re alone with a dude, it’s a date. 😂

I think it helps to look back at some earlier parts of the story. In episodes S1E8 to S1E10, Lügner, Linie, and Draht act on the orders of Aura, one of the Seven Sages of Destruction. They pretend to negotiate for peace, but their real goal is to break the barrier protecting the human city. In S1E10, three unnamed demons who are each stronger than a general massacre elves in order to carry out the Demon King’s command. This shows that demon society is built on a hierarchy, where those with less power obey those who are stronger. Flamme explains this to young Frieren in S1E10. With that in mind, the fact that Schlacht and the Seven Sages of Destruction were all gathered together was most likely due to a direct order from the Demon King himself. The target was the Hero of the South, who managed to force the Demon King’s army to retreat to the northernmost reaches of the Northern Plateau in just one year. Schlacht and the Seven Sages were assembled specifically to carry out this command. At the same time, just as demons are easily misled by the magic concealed by Flamme and Frieren, and just as the Hero of the South only revealed his future sight to Frieren after careful thought, it is clear that the demons had no idea that the Hero of the South could foresee the future at all. Based on this, my personal interpretation is that the Demon King ordered Schlacht and the fully assembled Seven Sages of Destruction to stop the Hero of the South, who was known as the strongest human. Schlacht could foresee that he would die in this battle, but because he was acting under the Demon King’s command, he had no choice but to carry out the mission even while knowing the outcome. Unlike demons, who tend to openly display their strength, the Hero of the South kept his true ability hidden. He knew that Schlacht possessed the power to foresee the future, and he also understood that only someone with the same ability could truly stand on equal ground with him. That is why the Hero of the South chose to perish together with Schlacht, clearing a path for the other heroes, while Schlacht only knew that he would die in this unavoidable mission and could not understand why he could not win.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Whilst I absolutely don't dispute your theory! I do think there's possibly more to it than the story will eventually reveal :')

They never say they use language blindly, on the contrary they show and tell that demons have a very clear command over language and know exactly what they are doing with it. What is said is that they developed the ability to use human language to device their prey, an ability that evolved from when they were monsters calling for help to lure in prey. The classification of "Demon" is a broad category defined as monsters capable of speech. Them using language to communicate with each other doesn't contradict any of that, it can be simply seen as an exaptation, they already acquired speech, not using it when cooperating with each other would be a waste. A predator making itself seem harmless and trying to garner pity and mercy by lying about their non existent family, because they knows that this tends to be a vulnerable spot in it's prey, is still emotional manipulation and deception. The goal may have shifted from capturing prey to self preservation but the method is still deception.
