I think the standing up looks good 👍 but I do also think you look like a teacher giving a presentation 😆 ❤️

Keishi

Standing/Sitting, whatever's comfortable for you.

Sebas Tian

Full circle when you remember me saying on your reaction to the first time that Loulan arrived "Loulan, my second favorite character after MaoMao" I was always there hahah

Mei

I'm really looking forward to the time when you'll finally read the light novels because lots of scenes hold so much weight there given the amount of info/scenes that build up to certain moments. ^^ I'd be interested to hear your thoughts comparing the anime and the LNs! So excited to see your react for the next ep! <3 can't believe it'll be the last one for a while ;A;

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

She scared his face so he would be less handsome as a way to grant her mother's wish.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Perhaps but I don't like the idea that she would grant her mother anything after all the pain and suffering she's caused. I believe it was more because she knew it would incur a death penalty.

KatoBen

1st, the post credits this episode was not a preview of the next episode, it was a memorial of Shisui and Maomao's time together. I still believe that Maomao was abducted on the moment, but Shisui and Suirei had both already included her in their plans to spur on Jinshi and Lakan to attack the Shi clan faster. Loulan or Maomao did say/think something along the lines that due to the quality of the hairpin, if it's sold, it would surely make it's way back to the one who commissioned it. Also, what did Loulan give Jinshi, a prophetic warning? There is knowledge she excels at. Next episode, the seasonal train slowly marches into the station as the story to be told concludes and everyone departs, left with wondering thoughts of what's of what's to come in the future. Note: I did mention prior, there was a teaser released for season 3 right after the final episode aired. There are zero spoilers in the teaser, and would love to hear your theories on where the story may be going from the tease and the unresolved stories/points mentioned in season 2.

KatoBen

Some people still love their parents, even if their parents were evil. It's a similar sentiment Maomao gave to hers, she would not be here if not for them. Personally, I think scaring his face was to guarantee they would try to execute her on the spot, rather than capture her and execute her later. She was already guaranteed the death penalty for participating in the rebellion.

Kita

I love the earrings you wear 😍

Mina E.D

This is a top 3 episode for me, and it really cemented Shisui/Loulan as my favorite character. I just feel the most connected to her character out of everyone in the show and I feel I can relate to her in so many ways. I also have a soft spot for Suirei which I didn't expect to have at all and I'm sure other watchers didn't expect either. I didn't expect what this part of the season would bring at all in terms of depth/complexity/conflicting feelings I have about the characters and the stuff that happened. Standing looks fine as long as its comfortable for you. At first I was like "idk" cause I personally can only concentrate if I'm sitting, but thats me. If you feel more energetic then that's great.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

She literally said this is all I can do to he mother for her mother, and she already incurred the death penalty for being part of the rebellion.

The track that plays at 37:56, “My Hometown” by Kevin Penkin, is one of the most beautiful, tragic pieces on the soundtrack, and its first appearance in the show happens to be Season 1, Ep 14 when Loulan first enters the rear palace. I remember that scene left a significant impression on me but I didn’t know why apart from how distinctly somber it was. Hearing that same track playing here really shows how well this story has been adapted to highlight the tragedy of Loulan’s character and the system that made her mother both a victim and a victimizer.

Buzzard

Holy Moses! Is that a book or a doorstop?😲 It would take me six months to read it. Standing or sitting is entirely up to you, whatever is comfortable. I can understand your concern about the arm waving. I remember seeing FlexieJay break her chair and topple her microphone during her Demon Slayer reactions. (She gets a bit excitable)😆

Leah Henderson

Urgh I'm ugly crying again! Shisui surprised me at every turn, and I was shocked by Shishou's love for Shenmei. The two tanukis fooled me completely!

Gpinko

Personally I couldn't tell if you were sitting or standing, whatever works for you! Other reactors I've seen do standing desks as well. SO glad you were able to follow along with all of the reveals and the family trees to keep up with. I feel like lots of people have a hard time with it 😂 which is fair, you really have to pay attention, and keep track of things. But you did and it's fantastic Shishou tricked us all didn't he! I love this series' buildup of characters and only giving you tiny crumbs up to the reveals without really holding your hand through it. I love predicting things but i also really enjoy being surprised, and this show does well with that. I am also reading the Light Novels! I have the first 5, reading Book 1 right now, we'll see if i can hold back from reading on after I finish Book 4, or wait till October when Season 3 is out 😅

WondrousMay

Loulan’s grand finale was an emotional one. Her dance scene was one of the most beautiful scenes in S2 for me. It was a nice parallel to Maomao’s farewell dance back in S1. I was intrigued with Loulan’s character ever since her introduction so it was such a satisfying journey to follow her story. Your discussion about Shenmei was also wonderful! I love how you emphasized that she wasn’t a good person but she was also the product of the male-dominated society. I feel that you’re more reactive with your hands when you’re standing and it’s nice to see haha. I think you should do what you’re comfortable!

Mickael Landry

Thank you so much, Sophie, for introducing us to this show! 🙏. I doubt I would have followed it on my own. There’s so much to discuss, where should I start? 😅 I recall someone referring to Suirei as the "Moriarity" to Maomao's Sherlock, but this arc truly astonished me by unveiling that Shisui was the "Moriarity" all along. First and foremost, Shisui is an incredibly unique and well-crafted character. She navigated an impossible situation, sacrificing herself to protect as many lives as possible while ensuring the Shisou clan's corruption was permanently uprooted. Alongside her father, she masterfully turned the tide for the empire, exposing their entire operation to the Moon Prince to secure the nation's future. Her stoicism was remarkable; she didn't just accept her death, she leaned into the role of the "great villain" to provide the closure the country required. The visual parallel between her final performance and Maomao's dance at the end of Season 1 is breathtaking. 💃🏻 While Maomao danced to celebrate her mother’s new beginning and Lakan’s closure, Shisui danced to celebrate her own liberation. It was a rhythmic exorcism of her mother’s oppressive influence, signaling the death of "Loulan" and her final embrace of her identity as Shisui. One was a dance of rebirth, the other a dance of resolution, yet both were profoundly moving acts of autonomy.

Mickael Landry

👴🏻 Then we have Shishou... He is such a tragic, deeply flawed character whose unrequited love and crippling guilt allowed him to be manipulated by Shenmei, acting as a "villain" to protect her until the very end.  Shishou loved Shenmei deeply, but she was obsessed with her humiliation at the hands of the former Emperor. She used Shishou to fuel her vengeance, manipulating him into supporting her acts of embezzlement, conspiracy, and attempted murder against the Imperial family, specifically targeting Jinshi. Shishou was not unaware of the absurdity of their plan. Realizing Shenmei had gone over the edge, he adopted the role of the villain, gathering the corrupt, "dirty" elements of the Shi clan to be wiped out in one go, essentially sacrificing himself to end the corruption and protect the state. We have to keep in mind his loyalty to the previous Emperor. The confrontation with Jinshi and the Royal Guard was never meant to be a winnable battle. Shishou went into it knowing he was going to die, laughing as he was cut down, having completed his last, tragic duty to the woman who never loved him.

Mickael Landry

🙎🏻‍♀️ One final thought on Shenmei She is the classic "architect of her own misery." Her obsession with status makes her a tragic figure because, in her mind, a life of freedom with Shishou is actually a "downgrade" from a life of power she doesn't even possess. Like Shin, her ego creates a psychological trap where she values the title of Empress more than genuine connection. If they had eloped, Shishou would have likely gone from her "greatest joy" to her primary scapegoat. In a fugitive life, every missed luxury, from silk robes to fine dining, would become a reminder of the "throne" she thinks she lost, making a resentful relationship inevitable. She doesn't want Shishou; she wants the power she thinks he stole from her by offering a way out.

Mickael Landry

I shared tears with you, Leah. Here, please take a tissue *sniff* 🧻 The Tanuki and his daughter took on the roles of the ultimate villains to protect their nation. They were never truly valued, leaving a permanent mark on their legacy. Shishou found himself unable to resist falling in love, while Loulan had no choice but to be born into this family. It’s a heartbreaking tragedy from every perspective.

Brendan Horn

One of the explanations I most commonly see for why Loulan scared his face is that it is a guaranteed death sentence to injure a member of the royal family. So she's ensuring she has no way out and dies as the smiling villian giving one last performance, like her father. Which is why they have that quick scene of Basen seeing that Jinshi has been injured and then ordering the guards to fire.

Mickael Landry

I think both interpretations hold merit. 😄 ▪️Your argument is valid Sophie There is no definitive way to determine the method of execution: it could be through stabbing, beheading, or a gunshot to the head. This suggests that she truly wanted to embrace death on her term. .With her final dance and her last smile, she achieved the freedom she had longed for. ▪️ In her last moments, she marked Jinshi’s face, serving as a symbol of her mother’s triumph over the royal family. Despite Shenmei’s wickedness, she was still her mother. 🗣"Mother, this is the best I can do."

Brendan Horn

Just my take, but I feel like Loulan is lying when she says this was all a plot by Shisuo to "kill all the rot" in the palace. To me, it sounds like convenient story to clear his name somewhat and protect the "dead" members of the Shi clan. He was surprised when he realized Loulan wasn't her mother's willing puppet earlier when she started throwing hands and talking back for the first time ever, so I don't think they were ever working together to take her down. Before he went to investigate the gunpowder explosion, he seemed to just be hiding in his bedroom, just waiting for the army to show up and end it all while he listened to the debauchery his wife was engaging in in the other room just to torment him. He only snapped out of it when Loulan lit a fire under him and pushed him to give one final performance, my read was he was just a broken and defeated man until that point who just wanted the woman he loved to forgive him and love him back so gave in to her every demand. Not someone whose "400IQ 5D chess" plan to root out political corruption was about to come to fruition. But Im willing to admit I could be completely wrong.

Mickael Landry

🗣"I wonder if I can be a better actor than my father." (Shishui @ 40:50) I believe Shishou is a multifaceted character who, at his essence, remained devoted to the Imperial Family, including the former Emperor, despite portraying a villainous role to support his wife, Shenmei. Even while collaborating with Shenmei, he understood that being eliminated by the Royal Guard would eradicate all the corruption within the Empire along with himself. The operation was doomed from the outset; this is suggested. Shishou was a highly esteemed and clever strategist from a branch of the Shi clan who assisted the Empress Regnant in abolishing the slave trade by enhancing the Inner Court. There was no possibility that this plan could overcome the Royal Guard, and Shishou likely recognized that. Shisui even confronts her mother directly, pointing out that she surrounded herself with fools for believing otherwise. Ultimately, Shisui only encourages her father to complete what he had, even if indirectly, initiated. This is why he approaches Jinshi with the Royal Guard and launches a direct attack. This would undoubtedly result in the demise of everyone involved.

Brendan Horn

I don't think he was loyal to the PedoEmperor at all. He betrayed him multiple times. He let the PedoEmperor's daughter be abused and killed by Shenmei. He used the PedoEmporer's grand daughter to try and assassinate the PedoEmporer's second son (not to mention forcing her to be a servant and constantly abused/tortured!), then tried to assassinate him a second time. He dug a secret passage to steal one of the PedoEmperor's high ranking concubines who was being kept as a hostage to ensure his loyalty. The PedoEmperor only released Shenmei when Shisou presented a grandchild with a Shi Clan name because he thought he could finally trust him, and then Shisou abandoned her and took her Shi Clan name away! The dude was never loyal to him, everything he did was for Shenmei.

Mickael Landry

You emphasize actually the complexity of his character! The intriguing duality of embodying both a villain and a hero creates a captivating character journey. Although he acts as a villain to support his wife, Shenmei, he remains at his core loyal to the Imperial. His involvement in what seemed like a rebellion was actually a strategy to identify and eliminate corrupt individuals to safeguard the nation, rather than an attempt to overthrow it. A high strategist would never engage in a hopeless frontal battle; the plan was doomed from the start, and I cannot believe that a respected figure close to the former Emperor would have trusted such a poor war strategy. 🤔 His laughter and relief at his very end, after being cornered by the Royal army and pierced, suggest that he found satisfaction and died with a sense of duty fulfilled.

Brendan Horn

"I murdered some of your kids including the one you specifically asked me to care for, but don't worry Im still a loyal servant to you and your family!" I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. You think he's a 400IQ 5D chess strategist who orchestrated multiple assassination plots out of loyalty, I think he's a backstabbing traitor whose only goal was winning back the woman he loved and cared nothing for the Emporer, the Kingdom, or his own children.

Mickael Landry

I see where you're coming from, but I don't think that Shishui lied to the Moon Prince just to clear her father's name at that moment when he graciously listened to her. She was no longer hiding behind Loulan's persona and delivered openly her final speech without any hidden agenda, ulterior motives. This is why, much like Shishui, Shishou is also seen as a tanuki due to his unpredictable, cunning, and remarkably clever, yet playful nature. I believe it would be misleading to simply label him as a simp to Shenmei, as doing so would undermine and dilute the idea of the tanuki in his character.

Brendan Horn

Honestly, I more think she was spinning a story for Jinshi as part of her true goal to protect Suirei, the kids, and the other Shi clan exiles she talked about more than to clear her father's name. I just think its more palatable to let some Shi clan members live if it can be established that the "rotten" members are all dead and it was all part of some grand plan to do so. By giving Jinshi that framework to build with she is protecting the people she loves even if it only decreases the odds they'll all be executed a tiny bit. To me her entire interaction with Jinshi was a performance to save them.

Gabriel Tkacz

Oh yeah that's immediately what I assumed

Gabriel Tkacz

As far as book stuff goes, I think just like stopping at significant points of the books (e.g. interludes) and discuss your thoughts and theories like you do with regular anime, and maybe before starting sequels from a series, so just a ton of short-ish videos

Mickael Landry

Shishou was an exceptionally astute and cunning strategist who rose to lead the Shi clan and took on the role of Prime Minister, genuinely dedicated to maintaining the stability of the Li Empire. His mission has consistently been to eradicate corruption in all its manifestations. Considering his position as Lakan's equal in the court, it seems unlikely that someone of Shishou's caliber would just blindly follow his wife's betrayal of the Empire without any hidden motives. While Lakan may find personal relationships challenging, he is adept at manipulating circumstances to his benefit, which is why he is feared for his cleverness. This prompts the question: what has earned Shishou such esteem in the court if not his extraordinary intelligence and steadfast loyalty❓️🤔 In Shishou's final moments, Jinshif even expressed his astonishment: "The emperor's closest retainer, there since the last emperor's era, and a traitor. Abrupt? Disappointing?" Although his passive acceptance of his wife's cruelty towards his daughters is certainly reprehensible, I perceive him not as a genuine villain but rather as a tragic figure who unwittingly assumed that role. Is this viewpoint a reality, or simply a narrative constructed by Loulan to justify Shishou's actions?🤷‍♀️ If we accept the notion that Shishou was merely a thoughtless follower, it becomes challenging to reconcile this with the respect he received from the Imperial court, as well as his moniker "Old Tanuki," which represents cleverness, deceit, and trickery. The explanation Shisui offered to Jinshi appears to support this more complex depiction of Shishou. I understand your points, but making him too simplistic would ultimately render him foolish. Let's then agree to disagree, and that's perfectly fine.  🙂

Brendan Horn

I feel like you all are glazing the hell out of him way too much. He isn't the equal to Lakhan at all and his meeting with Lakhan proved it. His biggest brain move was recommending that they sell the slaves they were no longer allowed to sell to the palace itself, just so that he could organize the palace expansion, so he could build a secret tunnel into the most guarded part of the palace and STEAL a concubine! And then when that plan failed he worked to get close to the emperor for years, won his trust by marrying his daughter and having a child with her, and as soon as he got what he actually wanted from the emperor, Shenmei, he dropped Suirei and her mom like sacks of rotten potatoes! There would be no Shi clan lead assassination plots against the empire without his direct involvement! It's like saying Lee Harvey Oswald was trying to protect JFK by shooting him himself to reveal his own assassination plot.

Mickael Landry

I would have truly appreciated it if you could address what makes Shishou be seen as a Tanuki? As a master of deception and transformation, with the ability to trick others and orchestrate complex, deceptive schemes? This characterization has been hinted at throughout the season. You claim he is far from being equal to Lakan, and that I might be over-glorifying him, but you haven't responded to what qualifies him to be considered as cunning as Shishui if he is merely a pushover and doormat who only followed gullibly Shenmei's desires? Because it would then resemble a big paradox... In your view, what characteristics define him as an elderly Tanuki (considering that Shishui was later linked to this same symbol)? I believe we have explored this topic thoroughly and my last comment about it,  and I would like to hear your perspective on this question to fully understand your viewpoint. 🦊 🧠 I also don't believe it's merely a coincidence that both Jinshi and Shishui emphasize the concept of staging in relation to Shishou, suggesting that he shouldn't be judged at first glance. Your final paragraph about JFK/Oswald really misunderstands my viewpoint! I am not saying at all that Shishou is a good guy neither a martyr; rather, he embodies a grey area, caught between his love for Shenmei, which has led him to be passive and complicit with her various schemes, and his devotion to the Empire.

Tobe

Gosh Suirei running towards Shisui and not being able to grab onto her in time gets me teary eyed every. single. time. It's such a heartbreaking parallel to Maomao almost falling off the roof in Season 1, but Jinshi was able to get to her in time. Speaking of parallels, one of my favourite things about this season is the sheer number of doubles and parallels we have. We've got all the physical doubles like Ayla and Aylin, Loulan and Renpu, Concubine Jin and Tao from the corpse fungus incident, Shin and Lihua and even Shenmei and Loulan, given that Shenmei tried to turn Loulan into a copy of herself. We've also got fun parallels like Maomao vs Maomao the cat and Jinshi vs the moon fairy. And the character parallels (Suirei vs Maomao and Shisui vs Maomao). On the surface, Maomao and Shisui have so many similarities. They're both daughters of the most powerful men in the country (outside Jinshi and the emperor), they've been physically hurt by their mother, they both gain so much joy from special interests people around them consider weird, but their stories take such different turns. Maomao is free to be herself for the most part because she's got such a strong support network of people to look after her. Meanwhile, everyone Loulan cares about, the Shi clan children and Suirei, are people she needs to protect. It makes you wonder what her story could have been if Shishou grew a backbone earlier and stood up to Shenmei or some other adult in the Shi clan cared enough to look after her. Maybe she could have met Maomao as Shisui and they'd be friends for life.
