Bleak times ahead for my boy, wars coming to him.

I think they expected Olmar to kill the first guy, then die from the rest of his friends. Thorgil was a miscalculated variable. Your analysis of Canute is very insightful! And I too feel bad for Olmar 😔 I didn't think his character would be getting any highlights from me to be honest.

Regardless of how bad I felt for Olmar, I can't lie some of the jokes that were made at him got me to crack up a bit... Also, it should go without saying that all blacked out intestines were fully drawn in the manga, bones and guts and all. Just to spell out Canute's plan a bit. He got some guards to rile Olmar up, such that he'd lash out. Coin guy would make sure one of them gets killed at his hand, after which the other 4 round olmar up. In absence of Olmar, Ketil would inherit the blame and get arrested, allowing Canute and the crown to "peacefully" requisition the family's assets. He'd probably execute the guards that were initially involved to silence them or something so word wouldn't get out and they could control the narrative. Thorgil's involvement was the miscalculation in the end. Anyway, cannot wait for the second half of the season! It's somehow gonna be even more peak. It's truly starting to ramp up now, huh...

14:54 As you're saying the contrast between them is clear, and a small detail that I love is how even though Olmar only killed 1 guy and hated it he's the one covered in blood while Thorgil has killed 4 or 5 and doesn't have a single drop on him.

My theory regarding Canute at this point I like to call the "Demon King" trope. There are many anime who use a similar idea, without confirming if the theory was correct or not for this anime, it is a commonly used archetype. "how do I unite these people? Well I'll give them something to hate more than they hate each other! Then they will be forced to unify against a common enemy!" As someone presumably (I mean a doctorate in literature is about as concrete as it gets), more versed in stories than I am, I am interested if this is a common trope that crosses cultural boundaries or if this is mainly an anime centered idea? One of the things I enjoy so much about your content is how at times you can nail down exact plot pathing based on what I assume is just the breadth of content you have delved into and knowing how stories will typically hit certain things based on the set up, no original stories and all that. But also I really love when I can see exactly how you've came to a conclusion but it ends up being completely different than your expectations.

"who needs enemies when you have a brother like that" I actually spit my drink out lol thank you

Great reaction thank you 👌 Olmar is traumatized after his first kill, while Thorgil is enjoying himself as he dismembers everyone in the back. This scene effectively illustrates the duality present in the world of Vinland Saga. Some individuals thrive on violence, whereas others are appalled by it, you have brilliantly highlighted this contrast. You raised a very good question in your discussion, and to build on that, will Thorfinn be able to step over his oath and confront the guards if it means protecting Leif or Einar? Will people label him a hypocrite? Will Thorfinn's encounter with Canute bring about any change, hopefully for the better, or will it merely serve as an obstacle in Canute's pursuit of his "utopia"? I eagerly await your discovery. 🍿

Eren Canute Yaeger, interesting theory 😁

Excellent observation, well done! I overlooked that detail. It probably shows the chaotic nature of Olmar's messy killing compared to Thorgil's precise and efficient lethal strikes. It can serve as a strong representation on the psychological weight of their actions and the differing ways they engage with violence.

Toxic masculinity + insecurity is one of the most dangerous combinations to have and there's history to show for it. It is so sad and unfortunate to identify with so much of it when reminiscing on my younger years. There's always something to prove when the standards are nonsense and you think your self-value depends on it.

I feel like Canute started with the naive idea of unifying all the people with him ruling and guiding the people. But because he needed to make progress, he had to resort to underhanded tactics, force and punishment. This corrupted him or made him numb to ruling with tyranny and fear. Then at this point he's too far, that stopping and dismantling his army would cause more chaos and death everywhere, rather than him at least having the control and say where it happens. A slippery slope of power, or the curse of the crown.
