While the reason Muzan has a family isn't explained in the anime, the mangaka did directly say why. I'll wait until the next episode to tell you the reason, and even then it'll have to be an extremely vague answer

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume that you likely expected Muzan (you can use just his first name) to be a looming threat in the background for a longer period haha. :D His early confrontation with Tanjiro is a bold move that immediately establishes him as a terrifying adversary. This twist adds a layer of unpredictability to the storyline. Instead of knowing the ultimate antagonist is simply waiting at the conclusion, we're left wondering how Tanjiro can possibly overcome such a powerful enemy so early in his quest. It raises the stakes and creates a sense of urgency! It's as if Harry Potter encountered Voldemort right at the beginning of his journey. 👨🏻‍🏫🪄👽

I didnt really make this connection until your intro regarding the demon and his split into his multiple selves, but I was thinking about the demon in episode 2 - when Nezuko kicked his head off, his head and body started acting independently. That may be similar to how this demon ended in split?

There's an old saying, "beware the fury of a patient man". If Tanjiro ever really gets mad and lets loose it won't be pretty.💀

I really liked that Tanjiro didn't lash out at the guy when he told him "What do you know about it"? It would have been so easy for Tanjiro to try to make it about himself and tell him about all the pain that he has also suffered. But instead of doing that, he just listened to him with complete empathy and let him express his pain, never worrying about himself. It really made me think of other situations where I may have failed to follow his example, and hope I can become a better person by following his steps after I watched this episode.

I see the hypnotic suggestion as a necessity. The moment nezuko is a threat to a human she becomes a target for every demon slayer bar tanjiro, we can get into the complexities of consent but it was genuinely for her own safety, forget humanity or even tanjiro 😅. And yeah, muzan is the MJ demon. You can address him as such 👍

Don't remember if it was mention but just for context, as the "Taishō secrets" at the end point out, Demon Slayer is set in the Taishō era meaning between July 30, 1912 and December 25, 1926. That aside I feel like what Muzan "MJ" just did there was like the ultimate power move, yes it surely will be distracting but he also basically just confirmed to Tanjirou "Yes I am who you think I am, but there is absolutely nothing you can do about it, you can't even touch me". No one else saw what Muzan did, if Tanjirou does try to attack him it will look like he just randomly attacked a innocent man, and there is the possibility that Muzan will use the little girl as human shield. Also if he doesn't stop the new demon there will be countless innocent people getting killed. Tanjirou has been incapacitated with zero effort.

This was another great reaction and discussion! Muzan’s introduction was one of my favourite scenes! It’s just so chilling and really showed why he’s going to be a formidable foe!

College has been real busy for me lately but I just had to catch up on your Demon Slayer series. I really love your insights into this one and hopefully I can stay up to date to follow along on this journey with you!

I'm interested in the fact that you don't seem to mention the idea that maybe Muzon (MJ) didn't mean to turn Nezuko into a demon? What if she or someone else fought back and wounded him enough to draw blood, and that somehow got into Nezuko's system? Maybe she bit him, for example. Or we know the little brother had an axe as the last time we saw him he had one and was talking about chopping wood. Maybe he got a very lucky hit in, and the blood sprayed out and interacted with Nezuko somehow. That might explain why she seems different from other demons. Because she was never meant to be one, and wasn't turned into one with intent by Muzon. Also, we've seen now that it seems demons retain some sort of trait from when they were human. What if, because she was turned accidentally while trying to save her family, the thing she remembers consciously or not is the bond with her family and her desperation to protect them? So her pre-human trait that's stayed with her into demon-hood is her desire to fight and protect her family? Just a theory. I thought it worth mentioning as I don't think I've heard you mention the possibility of her being turned by accident rather than on purpose (it's possible you said it and I missed it or forgot, though. I do have the memory attention span and memory of a goldfish).

There's an assumption that Muzan had some direct interaction in that situation though, and honestly in my first watch through I didn't get that. I can see why one would come up with this theory though so no shade there :) Once grampy Urodaki explained Muzan being a progenitor, I immediately though of vampires and werewolves. If you're fed upon but live through it or somehow get blood/bodily fluid into an open wound or something it results in Muzan's blood changing you via his progeny. That means any demon wandering around no matter how freshly changed they are can create more intentionally or unintentionally. **edit** just want to make sure to clearly state I'm watching along and theorizing here too so I am sure I have some details wrong lol. It's been ages since the start of this series, I don't remember much prior to Mugen Train ^^;;

Andrew Kerr

I get where you're coming from, and I thought that at first too, but what Urokodaki actually said was that Muzon was the only demon with the type of blood capable of turning someone into a demon. "The type of demon with the blood that can turn humans into demons... there's only one in this world. The one who was the first to become a demon", he said when telling Tanjiro about who can turn people into demons, before saying that's who his family's enemy was and who might know how to change someone back. If other demons could also turn people, he surely would have worded it more like "whilst any demon can turn someone, there's only one who might know how to turn them back. The one who was the first to become a demon... Muzon Kibutsuji". And then in this episode the demon said Nezuko must have consumed a lot of Muzon's blood to be as strong as she is. Combine that with the fact that he also met Muzon when he was threatened, which most likely was when he got turned, implying it was Muzon who turned him too. The way it's said and shown in both situations doesn't imply the progeny can also turn people, only Muzon. Plus, any other demon would surely have devoured his family. Muzon's the only one we've met so far who seems like he'd be capable and cruel enough to slaughter a family just for the sake of it and not devour them afterwards.

Andrew - it sounds as if you've already watched Demon Slayer so please ensure that your comments aren't potential spoilers or hints down the line. I am reacting in the moment so I do not have the full context of the show. My thoughts and theories will change as it goes through. But a lot of your responses are coming across as having already seen the show and therefore have a wider knowledge. Just please ensure if that's the case that your comments aren't an attempt to 'lead' me by hinting to potential reveals and plot points. Let me get there on my own and let the show tell me. If you haven't watched it then apologies but your perspective is very much giving the impression of having seen the show which is why I haven't responded until now as I don't want to be led or have my thought process guided by someone with full context. The point is to watch me form my own ideas and theories as I watch. Rather than trying to get me there faster than the show is revealing information.

Andrew Kerr

I've seen one of the movies a long time ago at a friend's house, but never watched the show properly. It's been on my list for a long time, and your reactions gave me the perfect opportunity to finally watch it. So I don't think I could spoil it even if I wanted to, as I barely remember the movie tbh as I wasn't paying too much attention to it. Nor would I want to, as only scum spoil things imo, and I enjoy your reactions too much to want to ruin them! The theory was one I just came up with while watching your reactions, and I was just curious about your opinion on it, as it didn't seem like you'd mentioned it or thought of it. I wasn't sure if maybe you'd spotted something I hadn't that made you rule out the theory. But I saw in your episode 8 reaction that you did mention something along the lines of the same idea. In fact, I think you even mentioned the position of the bodies with Nezuko being outside as if she was trying to protect or defend the body she was cradling. I hadn't even noticed that or thought about that. It just makes me even more convinced of my theory if I'm honest, so I'll be interested to see if I'm right or if I'm barking up the wrong tree lmao

Dooly

Muzan is certainly a smooth criminal.

Ilurandir

Wait what... How can it not be explained?! It seem like a pretty big thing... I am only up 18th episode, so i was thinking it will be talked about later🤨
