I got myself a tad turned around I think in the past few episodes in thinking there was more to the Father and Truth - that they are one being and God is a separate entity. That's because I forgot core aspects of the story that happened WAY back at the beginning. My brain can only remember so much haha!!

After doing some evaluating. I think the Father and Truth are connected somehow - maybe the Father is split off from Truth like the Homunculus are split from him. They do look VERY alike each other so I think there has to be some reasoning for that.

But yes - I just need to clarify as I'll likely film a correction for Ep 59 (I think it was) where I got myself turned around in my forgetfulness. I'll leave it as is for Patreon but YouTube are HARSH so I don't want to post something that is wholly incorrect especially now that I've had a chance to reflect and realise that I was WAY OFF base.

The Father's goal is to devour Truth who he sees as a God in order to gain all the knowledge of the universe. Which is why he has the failed door and is desperate to have 5 sacrifices that have all seen Truth in order to gain access to this larger door that is the universe itself. Truth is a separate thing that punishes those who break the 'natural order' by committing human transmutation and whose toll is ironic as it relates to what drove them to this act of desperation. Whether Truth is God or not definitely depends on the perspective which is eerily reminiscent of society as a whole. Some believe in God and others don't. The Father sees Truth as a God that he can consume but Hohenheim does not see Truth as a God as there's the phrase where he states 'that which he believes is a God'.

I wonder what toll the Father will have to pay though unless he doesn't because he's a Philosopher's Stone so perhaps he can gain access as we know that the Philosopher's Stones don't obey the natural order of equivalent exchange. So could be that he solely needed to sacrifice those who have seen Truth to gain access to the information. But I still don't see Truth just allowing this to continue and may have something up their sleeve as they are quite an interesting figure.

But yes - apologies! I was getting myself a tad confused. This show can be hard to follow with all the information it throws at you. I still believe that the Father and Truth are connected somehow BUT they are separate.

It’s not like this is a First Time React or anything… oh, wait a minute… never mind! Turns out I didn’t leave the oven on.

My favorite anime of all time. Tears fall at these episodes no matter how many times I watch them

Both Scar and Dad survived so they both can die next episode! :D

None of this is spoilers , it's mostly my interpretation of things that already happened in the show but just in case here's a heads up . In my opinion Truth is more like Equivalent Exchange personified . When alchemists perform human transmutation , they are trying to create or recreate a human soul , something that is immaterial and thus cannot be acquired by sacrificing only purely material "value" . Something immaterial also has to be lost like the ability to see your future , to feel your borther's warmth , to stand proudly or to have children . And just like the body is the material vehicle of your immaterial soul , the immaterial "toll" that Ed Al Izumi and Mustang had to pay translated into the material loss of parts of themselves that matches those tolls . And so Truth is simply Equivalent Exchange taking on a shape (which mimics the person it is talking to) and telling them "hey ! Didn't you forget something ? I'm the principle which you know applies to everything in the universe ! That means I apply to you too ! If you're going to try and transcend your human limitations , that also means sacrificing part of your humanity !" . My understanding is also that the original homonculus is intended to be a sort of physicalization of human nature . Hohenheim said the Xerxian alchemists used some of his blood , the material recipe/description of a human , to create the dwarf in the flask who is represented as a little cloud of nothingness trapped in a jar . Like an idea caught in a bottle , he is the immaterial description of a human , pure human nature , which the alchemists managed to pull into the material world . In that regard Father at this point would be pure "knowledge" pulled out of the door of Truth which is the infinite repository of all knowledge we see in episode 2 . That's why the original dwarf in the flask and Truth have similarities , they are both concepts , immaterial things interacting with us , but Father being human nature personified desperately seeks to become material , to "walk on his own two feet" , to become more and more , to encompass more and more , to consume more and more etc. I think we can see Xerxes as an allegory of ancient Greece and the Xerxian alchemists as philosophers .

Kimbly hates hypocrisy. I love his dynamic in all of this! So good! He may be a psychopath but he's such a fun character

Definitely an interesting perspective but personally I see Truth as the Balance of Nature and the Father as the Chaos that ensues when one refuses to acknowledge that balance and believes it does not apply to them. It's not that Truth is Equivalent Exchange but rather that is part of the universe that we live in. Nothing can be gained without sacrificing something in turn. It's a fundamental truth which is why Truth uses it as the gatekeeper of universal balance. It enforces the law even in an ironic way but still grants something in return for those that break it which is knowledge. It emphasises that there's always a price to be paid whilst keeping balance in ensuring people refrain from partaking in human transmutation because it violates natural order in allowing humanity to play God and replicate that which cannot ever be replaced which is the soul. It's not a fair exchange so they are punished. Truth drives home the reason for WHY they are being punished, which is the unequal exchange, by granting them something equivalent to what they took as punishment. It's almost a "you thought you could break the cycle of life and death by ignoring equivalent exchange - well I am going to rub it in by showing you that equivalent exchange is what makes the universe as it is and cannot be ignored!" Whereas as the Father seeks to become something else entirely and in doing so wants to break the bonds of what he is. We agree that his purpose and desire is to become material. He wants to have what humans have without understanding that his nature does not allow him that because he is NOT human. Yet in seeking to become human, in devouring God / Truth, he believes he can control it and thus control the universe. He ignores the fundamental reality that there is a balance and a law to the world we exist in. Humans are part of that balance because together we form a part of the universe itself. We are all connected. In erasing humanity he seeks to upset the universe itself. Which is counter to Truth. I see Truth as more the gatekeeper of the Universe and the balance that ensures humanity does not exceed beyond its abilities and throw the rest of the world into chaos. Meaning equivalent exchange is the 'punishment' for seeking to restore that which cannot be done e.g. returning the dead back to life as it breaks societal order.

I love your interpretation as well ! FMA is such an interesting show in that regard , I think that's also part of why it resonates with so many people . Can't wait to see your reactions to the last 3 episodes (and don't forget to stay hydrated haha).

Kimblee is undeniably an awful person, but the extent to which he values convictions makes him fascinating. In the manga, it is strongly implied that when his squad found Winry's parents dead, he was on a mission to stop their treatment of ishvalans, yet he praises their resolve to their creed as doctors when he's speaking with Winry. It plays such a pivotal role in hindering Pride, but it is by no means a twist for his character.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I think that's the beauty of FMA is that you really can look at it from so many perspectives!! But it all comes back to this idea of life and death and balance and chaos! That we need to have both in order to have a fair society but if someone strives too far then it can signal the downfall of all because we are all connected in this universe!

DrSophieDarlingReacts

It's just so true to him. He would have allowed it if not for Pride being a hypocrite haha!!

DrSophieDarlingReacts

It was so good to see him again - especially that mention to Pride of "you don't know Edward Elric" because he KNOWS that Ed would never kill him!

Gpinko

The beginning of this episode is SO GOOD! Don't blame you for getting emotional at all. Also, I know you and others waished for Wrath's wife to come maybe "save" him, or bring him to our side, but honestly, I love how this played out. His ending suited him well. He truly died peacefully, without regrets. Ah yes, glad you clarified this point with Truth/Father, I didn't yet want to correct you since we have a few episodes left, but, we have already been given details in the first episodes about "Truth". "I am what you call the world, or perhaps the universe, or perhaps God, or perhaps truth, or perhaps all, or perhaps one, and I am also YOU." It is a completely separate entity from Father. It is not on anyone's side, it passes judgement to balance out nature like you mentioned. Father knows all about this principle of course, he provided the knowledge to Hoehnheim in the first place . But does he REALLYY understand it himself? Perhaps, but he's trying to defy it anyway. As for if he will be punished for this, we'll have to see. Father doesn't have to sacrifice anything of himself by opening the door, that's what the "sacrifices" were for, as well as all the people of Amestris. THAT was his exchange to acquire God. Philosopher's Stones seem to ignore the principles of Equivalent Exchange, but really, there is an exchange, just not of the one performing the alchemy. The stones are made of souls, so that is what's being used instead; their lifeforce, their energy. It can, and will, run out eventually. Genuinely every. single. character. in this show is SO good. Even Kimblee made an appearance once again 😂 you have to respect a villain for sticking to his principles. These next episodes are going to wreck you. (In the best way)

I mean we are talking about just over 7 months ago that I watched the first episodes of FMAB haha! My memory is decent but it's not that good as to remember such intricate details especially from 60 episodes prior! :') If I had binge watched then I likely would have but yeah it's been nearly 8 months so a lot of information definitely slips the net unfortunately with how much has happened since then! Yeah - I had thought that maybe there was something more to it but I guess in the grand scheme the 5 sacrifices are an 'equal exchange' for what the Father is requesting haha!

Wyld89

I'm curious about what led to your description on this video? Was it something you picked up while editing, based on comments/conversations with others, or just something you thought more about? My interpretation of the events of the past 3 episodes is largely based on the idea of the Father taking advantage of the mechanics of the doorway of Truth (controlled by Truth/God) for his own purposes: 1) The punishment/toll for human transmutation is set by Truth (not the father). But in exchange for that toll, the person in question gains significant power/knowledge 2) I THINK the way he pulled the "sacrifices" to him was by performing human transmutation on them so they go through the doorway, and then opening a new doorway at his location and pulling them through both (and using his philosopher stone as the toll) 3) I dont think the purpose of the "sacrifices" is totally clear, other than he uses the power theyve obtained as additional resources in his ritual to access god. Having other people who have committed the taboo and obtained a bit of "truth" (or god) is something powerful he can add to his own immense strength 4) The "toll" he paid to access god isnt paid by him, it's paid with everyone else. Philosopher stones and other souls can be used to pay tolls and avoid sacrificing anything of your own (but Ed and Al refuse to do that). The toll was immense to access the insane power he wanted, and all his actions throughout the series are to bring the maximum amount of power together at that exact moment. Side note: I love the idea that the pipes and throne we've seen since episode 1 were literally the Father feeding his body into the ground beneath everyone's feet to control their access to alchemical powers (and I think that's what caused him to age and use his stone faster than Hohenheim).

Wyld89

“That’s what it means to be married to a king” - I think you hit multiple good interpretations of this line. There’s something else I liked about it though, and that’s Lan Fan’s reaction. She’s a woman who loves someone who’s trying to be Emperor. That line has relevance to her future dreams and their consequences as well.

Gpinko

Oh don’t worry, not criticizing you haha. You already pick up on a lot as is, but watching several shows over several months, you can’t remember everything. Plus, I have the experience of seeing this show SEVERAL times now 😂

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Combination of editing, re-watching back my most recent reacts and also reflecting further on it. I tend to ruminate on the shows I'm watching offline quite a bit - happened a lot with AOT especially when there's some depth to them. Because all my thoughts are IN THE MOMENT sometimes a thought doesn't come to me until after because it's hard for me to keep track of everything all at once! :')

DrSophieDarlingReacts

That's such a good point! I didn't even clock how it would be relevant to Lan Fan and her relationship with Ling!

Ura Meshi

Right when Bradley said to Scar that God does not exist, he got blinded by the eclipse (which is a sign of God in many religions) and that allowed Scar to land the killing blow.

Wyld89

Makes complete sense. Although I have to say, I was constantly stunned out how well you remembered AoT plot points. Made for fantastic analysis

Wyld89

Thanks! I didnt notice it on half a dozen previous watches, but this time, it just hit me

Krul

Someone else has probably mentioned this before, but episodes 63 and 64 have special end-credits scenes that are pretty much part of the story itself. The song that plays during those end-credits is "Rain" which you already heard during this episode, so nothing is spoiled by watching them.

Vivasvan Gautam

Father attempting to control and contain God within himself, but at the same time losing grip over the ground he stood for centuries. Scar literally moved the floor beneath the father with his brother's research.

Kyle Taggart

The next episode is my favorite episode in the entire series. There's a specific line (which is slightly different in the dub), and it's a call back to a very early episode. I can't wait to see what you think of all of what is about to transpire lol. Also, how about Scar's brother being the TRUE MVP. What a genius. It's interesting how some characters don't get a name, like Mrs. Bradley, or Scar's bro, but yet they're actually very important in their own ways. I'm a 37 year old man and yet these episodes make me cry every single time! Without fail. So no worries on the tears. As I've watched probably 15 FMAB reactions at this point, I get disappointed when ppl aren't emotional at this stage haha. I mean, the one ending song kicks it off with "LET IT ALLLL OUTTT" lol. If ppl aren't bawling their eyes out at this point then they missed the point! haha. A couple more episodes of this journey!!!

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I could not keep it together and I doubt I'll be able to with the next handful of episodes!! They're going to destroy me :')

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I had full on theory charts made for AOT haha!! Also helped I was unemployed at the time so I could invest so much energy into thinking about the show :')

DepressedSoggyWaffle

He was such a little shit but Pride thinking of Wraith and Mrs. Bradley during his final moments will always make my heart ache. In the face of death, his mind tried to escape to where he felt most safe ://
