Charlie baker

Absolutely had the exact same feelings about makima when i first watched it. Such an unsettling energy she puts off

Charlie baker

Powers the best man 😂. Thought the ep 1 outro was gonna be here aswell btw?

Dillon leeming

I love denji, he's alot more complex than he may appear but he is very much a little shit. You know damn well you can feed yourself. I'm interested to see your thoughts on miss makima, I can finally say her name. This show is unreal and as someone who's "thing " is themes and subtext I think you're gonna get so much out of this show.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I recorded it and forgot to include it in this edit hahaha - it's late so slipped my mind

Denji considering being friends with devils makes so much sense because of his relationship to other humans, to Denji humans were the ones who always treated him horribly growing up not devils. I also really like the symbolism of makima tying the tie around denjis neck. It shows that while his quality of life has increased he’s still not free, it’s more like his leash got handed over from the yakuza to the government.

Aki Himura

If Makima is a trap, I'm falling for it head first, no hesitation 😂🐶

Fun fact, at around 15:00 when Denji is singing in the tub, in the manga he was singing and humming about his union job and paid days off. Figures MAPPA, a studio famous at the time for really poor labor conditions, would cut it. (From what i heard the studios improved on that front quite a bit in the past few years though)

18:30 that gave me a really good laugh thank you

AKI AKI AKI 😍 The yakuza called Denji a dog, and now Makima is doing the same, free my boyyy Makima is definitely an interesting character. I'm so curious about your opinion on her as the story progresses 👀

Cirac1

Denji really is a dog in so many ways! What will he do when he catches up to the car he's been chasing and barking at?

Carlo Marasigan

Makima is like thr sweetest most kind boss of all time! We will not tolerate Makima slander! WOOF WOOF !

I don't often do what I am about to do but after thinking about it non stop I just had to share with the class. SPOLIERS IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE SERIES YET!!! THIS INCLUDES YOU SOPHIE NO PEAKING. Okay now that their gone here is my confession. After watching Sophie react to this episode, I went and finished watching the rest of the series myself. I just was getting bad vibes from this one that I felt when watching certain amines iykyk. I finished watching the rest of the series tonight and honestly I'm really disappointed. This anime had the potential to be something really good, one that could tackle difficult subjects through the medium like Dandadan, keeping the adult humor but letting the tones of the show become series too. But honestly this series missed the mark and went straight into gooner material. and I don't use that word lightly. Especially given the fact that the main character is 16, the amount of inappropriate this that happen to him would be insane if not for the fact the show clearly fetishes it, and address the problem with a footnote line of "oh yeah I'm glad nothing to bad happened or i would get thrown into jail". Like jail is not the only reason its bad wtf! Also when it does come down to serious topics, its like the show itself doesn't care, and if it does, it is to further the character of a male protagonist. Like women don't purely exist to push your character forward once something happens to them. And if they aren't feminine like Power, (although they initially do treat her this way), once they realize she isn't, they are treated like "one of the boys". I don't know, I don't usually get this ragey about a show but something about this really pissed me off for some reason. I think its also the fact that Dandadan managed to hit all these points I'm talking about, with the story to back it up. If this if your favorite show, please state your case to refute this or explain that in later chapters it does get addressed like I'm hoping.

Carlo Marasigan

By “the rest of the series” I think you probably mean the rest of season 1. Did you also see the Reze movie? Do you know about the twists in the portion of the work that hasn’t been adapted yet? What gooner material are you referring to? There is sex in the discussion but it is hardly porn. Everything had meaning beyond physical gratification. And Denji has never used any female character (as far as i have seen). Instead various female characters have been using him.

Hanna Marquez

I'll come back to your comment after Sophie catches up with the show, I don't want to say anything just in case I spoil her accidentally. But I don't agree with what you're saying and with the way you view this show. But I can't say I blame you, since it's not a rare opinion to see online about csm.

Caleb Mackin

a cool detail of this show is that denjis desires are semi based upon maslows hierarchy of needs, hence why his desires are so simple right now

Jman

Spoilers: Dandadan and this are not even remotely similar to the subjects they tackle, this deals with sexual trauma and anyone that has gone through something similar can instantly latch onto denji because they recognize it in him, hyper-sexuality in anime is often seen as a joke in anime and pointless fanservice but never deconstructed like it is seen in chainsawman maybe it makes you uncomfortable because of the close to reality that it gets with certain subjects but that is a personal preference at the end of the day.

Storm_Striker

Iirc part of the reason Aki reacted so strongly to the hug comment is that the particular japanese phrase could be interpreted as sexual innuendo and his mind ran amok haha

Joseph Te Rangiita

I don't really blame you for having this opinion as the series doesn't completely spoon feed the message it's trying to tell like other animes do. All I'll say is rewatch it or change the way in which you view denjis character... Also watch the movie if u haven't, it's great and is a bit more straightforward about denjis real ambitions

Erjon Sejdijaj

Good to see you checked out the ED in the end there, all of them are great and unique in their own way! At least have of them are still in my playlist lol. I'd love for you to check out the OP as well sometime, it's not really spoilery but it's filled with references to famous movies. The author, Fujimoto, is well known for being an absolute cinephile, so they wanted to OP to reflect that. I actually wonder about what Denji said to Aki before "securing the porn." I really do think it was just a scheme to save the magazines. When I see his character and his backstory, he doesn't seem like the kind of person who would be able to get any deep empathy for anyone he's not personally close to. I reckon that in his mind, Pochita barely even counts as a devil anyway.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

At the moment I agree to disagree but I still have more of the show to watch haha! My mind might be changed but from what I see his actions contradict his words. It's almost like a defence mechanism that many traumatised people will use. They don't want to be rejected or open to society because they've been hurt too many times so they deflect caring actions as being for an ulterior purpose e.g. the porn. That's not to say he also doesn't want the porn but I think he doesn't want to appear vulnerable so shrugs off accepting his actions as being nothing more than selfish. Confronting the reality of the reason would re-open him to a lot of the trauma he's experienced so it's a protective mechanism as much as it is a deflection. He also does have empathy for people he doesn't know. Ep 3 very much shows him saving those in need that he doesn't know whilst playing it off as he's only doing it to cop a feel. I think Denji is definitely way more complex than just a horny teenager haha!

Erjon Sejdijaj

Oh he's for sure more complicated! In some ways think the author did too good a job at making him seem like this simple-minded teenager that some parts of the audience can fall into the trap of thinking he's just that. In actuality, Denji embodies a very simple yet deep conflict. All he wants is to just be happy, yet he has absolutely no idea what "happy" even means. Is it an emotion? A mindset? A goal? He doesn't know. He knows boobs make him feel good, so that oughtta be what "happy" is, right? He's such a blank slate that even the most obvious seeming concepts seem utterly foreign to me. The reason I said I don't think he can really care for people not close to him is because empathy is, in many ways, a learned trait. Loving is self-evident, and he for sure loved - and continues to love - Pochita. To project that love unto a stranger is a much more difficult act though. I think Denji has an intuitive sense of right and wrong, which he unconsciously acts towards, but my belief is that certainly at this part of the story it's self-driven instead of empathy-driven. Does that make sense? Like, he's doing the things he does because he feels the need to do so for his own sake, not for other's sake.

Alright, I have had the night to sleep on this and after reading the comments here is the conclusion I've come too. I'm not necessarily as angry as I thought I was, I think I was just really disappointed with how the show played out in handling characters that had a lot of potential. To clarify, I only finished watching the season that was available to me on crunchy roll which did not include the movie. I apologies for referring to this as gooner material but after watching so many amines with pointless fanservice, watching sexual scenes being portrayed in anime, especially with a character that was just established as a minor, leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Denji is a really likable character and I really enjoy his little shit attitude but at the end of the day he is still a teenager and should not be hypersexualized by almost every main female protagonist so far in the anime. I think the reason I was referring to Dandadan is due to the fact that it handles the sexualization of teenagers as the horror it is. I also agree that Denji has never used any of the women, infact the women use him, which makes sense he is the child and has rarely had any experience with social norms of what is appropriate. But just because he has no knowledge of what is appropriate does not give others the go ahead to engage with him in that fashion. They are adults, they should be able to not engage with this teenager sexually for more then an episode. I have no problem if this does get addressed in the future but after watching the given season, I found I was really sad about what is happening to Denji. Thank you for replying to my comment, I probably wont be engaging in this show anymore as in the smart words of our ancestors "don't like don't read".

Missed the first two eps until now, gotta make sure I get my notifications sorted out 😂 I’m so glad you seem to be liking it and the emotional beats are hitting how I thought they would. There are some moments where you said some comments I thought were crazy insightful and cut to the core of what the series is trying to say while other reactions made me rub my hands together like “oh she’s on board and strapped in but doesn’t know what ride she’s on yet” 😈 Can’t wait to see more and hope you continue to enjoy!

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I am very much beginning to realise that I am an action girlie haha!! I've been loving the Shonen's so much - it makes me almost feel like a kid again with how giddy and excited the fight scenes and the humour get me!

Szaleos

16:30 Denji was decapitated+ all his limbs cut off I think he was dead dead

Ved

I feel like denji's sexual encounters are not portrayed as a positive. All lf the women he is involved with are using sex to manipulate him. It's explicitly stated at least once that it's illegal. In fact before the most aggressive scene the show goes out of it's way to make him state his age, and portray him as very impaired, so you know how bad it is. The show is not endorsing the actions of the adult women, just because it shows them.
