Tanjiro showing her mercy is still one of my fave moments in the whole series. He's such a loveable character! And I reallyyyy enjoyed listening to you discuss (Tanjiro vs the demon father) masculinity through the lens of your PhD studies. <3

Inosuke getting excited to throw people into trees is another personal favorite moment of him. But a detail I really like in the episode is that when Tanjiro cuts Mother, her hair is also cut. I dont know why it sticks out to me, I dont know if it has significance, but the way it is animated is really well done. Edit: wow, that is an amazing subject for a PhD. Very impressive and fascinating. Approaching anime in particular (as a male-focused genre) with that background...I'm very glad youre watching some of the best representations of the genre, but now I'm also interested to see your interpretation of some of the well known, more problematic ones. And really, REALLY cant wait until you get to My Hero Academia, which has both

It could be a severing of her connection and ties. Considering her hair has been used as a weapon against her by the Father (we see him pulling her hair) the cutting of it is an emphasis on her freedom from that torment :)

I adore Tanjiro for all the reasons you said, and surprising enough, some people dislike him for those same reasons. That he's "too nice". But he's really not, he's grown so much since episode 2. Urokodaki's first impression of him was also "this boy is too kind, he won't make it". But now he no longer hesitates; he WILL do his duty, he will kill the demon. But he also still retains that kindness and empathy. Like you mentioned, he can feel sympathy for their suffering, while also not forgiving them for their sins. The scene where he switches forms to give her a peaceful death is so underrated and one of my favorites of this season 🤍 Can't wait for you to learn more about this family...and to see how our boys fair in this fight now that we know there is a Twelve Kizuki here somewhere. Their strength and skills are surely being tested already.

Hi Sophie! Thank you for this reaction and for sharing your insight from your PhD! I have good news about Tanjiro's influence on young japanese children! In 2020, in a survey geared towards elementary-aged school children about the person they admire most, Tanjiro came first, even before their own parents or teacher! Another fact about the poll was that, besides their parents and teacher, all of the top 10 places were filled by other Demon Slayer characters. Can't wait to watch your next reactions <3

Something I've always wondered. When the Mother is thinking of the person with the kind eyes who treasured her, and she wonders how that person is doing now, we see blood running down her arm. Would that be her own blood from being beaten, or is it that person's blood because she had become a demon and had just killed and devoured them but doesn't remember it? 🤔

It’s just so interesting to hear you talk about your PhD. and how you apply it to media! I’m glad to hear Tanjiro is a great representation of positive masculinity but unfortunately, not everyone thinks the same way… I’ve seen more hate for Tanjiro than other male characters. I hope your reaction and discussion can change some people’s opinion about him!

Well based on that person specifically being described as having always treasured her and having kind eyes like Tanjirou combined with the insistence that "a hungry demon will devour even it's parents and siblings" early on by Giyu I would assume it is that she killed them after turning.

Your discussion at the end about this kids brought to mind the quote “I will not give birth to a life that will discriminate against my gender, my own flesh and blood must not become a blade turned against me. If the world born from my body oppresses me, I will not let that world exist.”

In what way do they hate him? I need to know cuz I think hating Tanjiro is a red flag... Im all for "people can have different opinions of characters its not wrong just cuz it isnt the same as my own" like I get that.. but genuinely what is there to hate about him? He literally embodies kindness, so its kinda weird to hate him imo

From what I’ve seen, people say that Tanjiro is a “boring protagonist” who lacks significant character development and that he’s “too kind” to the demons. They also hate his inner monologues during fights. They find it annoying and off putting.
